- G5Unit91, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33That's no moon...
- smith41, on 10/11/2007, -5/+33Now if only they could find and destroy the Major League Baseball satellite that I SWEAR is spying on me.......
- gumburcules, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28Yes but neither you nor your husband should get your panties in a bunch about it.
- wawilli, on 10/11/2007, -8/+31Hmmm.... Makes you wonder what else to Government can see. *shifty eyes*
- RogerStrong, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21President Bush is a former Texas oil man, who's family has extensive ties to Saudi Arabia. Vice President Dick Cheney is the former CEO of Haliburton, who's Haliburton stock went up by $100 million thanks to his war over oil in Iraq. He campaigned on an executive jet loaned to him by Enron.
"Brake our dependence on oil"? Heck, they're using any "technologies" to *enhance* our dependence on oil. - djpants428, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20 is he on the space station or something?
- lmushl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Because Nautical Miles kick all other types of miles asses.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15A 25" telescope with adaptive optics is not in any way a small or simple - or cheap - instrument.
- BigT383, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16All of the high res pics on Google Earth are from aerial photos- airplanes, helicopters, balloons, etc... Stuff decidedly closer than spy satellites orbit.
- AjayF, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18Title is misleading, it was not CLEAR from the ground. Clear from the ground does not mean a 2 foot telescope ya goof.
- Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14It's not enough that we don't use metric. We gotta mix it up further. Keepin those measurements fresh, yo.
- Regulator980, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15My question is how the high school students knew the coordinates to find the space station in the sky. In any case, it's absolutely fascinating that this could be obtained with such simple instruments. Dugg!
- calebdesu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Ok I know I'm nitpicking, but this comment system has been up for like a week now. Use the reply button!!
- Fanrir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/tracking/
Would be my guess - BrainInAJar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9"but... but... Clinton!"
is that really all you conservatives have left? - pbslya, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10For anyone who might care, this was a question submitted to Dan Savage's syndicated column a few weeks ago.
http://thestranger.com/seattle/SavageLove?oid=241517
Dan's answer? -- "How the ***** should I know? Next!"
As to the question of whether you should care: No, please move on. Nothing to see here. - davidrools, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10dugg for "picture this:"
- dadrew1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Where is the block button now???
- michaelaranda, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Umm.... Am I missing something? I really hope that I'm not.
- kewlito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7yeah, better buy some missiles...
- answer42, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Reply button...it's there for a reason.
- HigherLogic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You didn't even need to RTFA to know that it wasn't high schoolers. From the story description on this very page:
"ASTRONOMERS at a Boston-area high school" - cain0713, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Nice picture but we know what surveillance satellites can do (with regards to the end of the paragraph on the picture's page). Just check out Google Earth. I can see a person near the Google campus were they got very high resolution images.
- ishmal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Well, adaptive optics are more like a family of techniques for improve effective "seeing." I think one of the more fun ones is the sending a bright laser beam toward the target view. It reflects off of particles in the atmosphere to make an artificial twinkle. Compensating for this known twinkle also corrects for the real twinkling objects in the field of view.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Do you want to know the terrifying truth? Or do you want to see me sock a few dingers!
- mwmccullough, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I blame Major League Baseball and Mark Maguire. wink wink.
- Lasereth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Seen clear from the ground? I guess with that notion, I can see Proxima Centauri clear from the ground
- englishganxta, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Why dont we use lightyears? /sarcasm
***** dumass... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Did they call the bomb squad?
- allywilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3To be honest I was thinking the same thing. What's nautical about astronomy? Don't see the reason. Plus, they said "up" - and we all know that's a lie (because we're smug, superior geeks).
- hurtz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I took this crappy video of Atlantis on its way back from my backyard:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz6uG_FTy2U - mad05963, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5look something not made in China!!!
- Pssdoff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2There's a monkey on the wing! THERE'S A MONKEY ON THE WING!
- guimonkey, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6one of the most impressive photos I have ever seen.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You think if they were doing something like this they wouldn't involve the students? Would have to be a ***** school for that to be the case.
- xoptics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Maybe it's just me, but it seems as though aybecker was just joking around. Try stepping down off your high horse and laughing for once. ;)
- toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2what's the difference between nautical and non-nautical miles?
- jthg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3'and nothing but the simplest "adaptive optics" (bendable mirrors, which correct for how the atmosphere warps the light)'
Isn't that considered cutting-edge technology? Or at least was not too long ago? - LexisNexis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2We use nautical miles because we're talking about space SHIPS
- poppadontpreach, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2concise and inarticulate. just the way i like my comments
- qcfb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Fine. How bout this: "Yeah, and we were really independent of oil when JFK was president." The point remains. It isn't as though we were a completely green country, and then suddenly out of no where the nefarious neo-con cabal got us hooked on oil through some diabolical incantation. To simply level the entirety of the world's problems on the shoulders of Bush and friends is to oversimplify the world, and give Bush far more importance than he deserves. It may comes as a shock to you, but the world is not black and white.
- aconaway, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dingers! Dinger!
- Uranium118, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I'll just take out my 25 inch telescope....
I thought he took the picture with a normal camera or a cellphone.
Very misleading title, I can also see things in space with a freaking telescope! - masgrada, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Because space miles don't work in all axises. Sheesh.
- JCSaint, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah but the shuttles costs like a gazillion dollars to launch.
- AdamPieniazek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dugg for awesome pic and for correctly citing Brookline, MA as being in the Boston-area (but not actually in Boston); it's a big deal to Bostonians...though I wish this wicked pissah pic was taken in Boston.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I hope the government doesn't use this to spy on my space station.
