- FulcrumVitesse, on 10/29/2008, -1/+29Ed White died in the fire on Apollo 1 two years later. Very sad.
- AmyVernon, on 10/28/2008, -3/+26It may have been 43 years ago, but that's still pretty freakin' cool
- deboerpa, on 10/29/2008, -4/+26This would be the first American space walk, the USSR did it a few months earlier.
- vestlandsfanden, on 10/29/2008, -1/+19Wright brothers. 60 years later: Space travel.
- Barney255, on 10/29/2008, -0/+12Hey! wow >you're< incredibly grammatically incorrect ¬,¬'
- duckarrowtypes, on 10/29/2008, -1/+13Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov made the first space walk during the Voskhod II mission on March 18, 1965. While not the first *astro*naut he was the first to do the described activity. (cue "The More You Know" music)
- floridiot2, on 10/28/2008, -4/+16***** yeah?
- skinflute, on 10/29/2008, -0/+11RealmDown: The NASA article isn't misleading, but the DIGG title is. Case closed.
- RealmDown, on 10/29/2008, -1/+11" Pictured above is the first american astronaut to walk in space: Edward White."
Accurate, and not misleading. - inactive, on 10/29/2008, -0/+9Nope. Edward white was the second man to walk in space. Alexey Leonov was the first.
- geneusutwerk, on 10/29/2008, -0/+9Just like a campaign ad!
- MisterOh, on 10/29/2008, -2/+9lol. a 9 year old webpage with a 43 year old photo in it.
very cool regardless. - orlyfactor, on 10/29/2008, -3/+10I wish I had a unit that expelled gas...oh wait...
- passedoutghost, on 10/29/2008, -0/+6First AMERICAN.
- passedoutghost, on 10/29/2008, -1/+6hey! wow! you're a douchebag!
- manicleek, on 10/29/2008, -0/+5It is misleading because although technically a Russian would have been a cosmonaut, it's 2008 now and the word astronaut is pretty much universally used for anyone who goes into space.
- meropealcyone, on 10/29/2008, -0/+5Nope. Gagarin was the first human in space, but he did not "walk." That honor goes to Alexei Leonov, another cosmonaut.
Edit: nm.........duckarrowtypes wins - adml_shake, on 10/29/2008, -2/+6Coming again, to save the mother ***** day yeah?
- alphgeek, on 10/29/2008, -0/+4It's really sad because Ed White II died in the Apollo 1 fire, along with Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee. They were the first US casualties of the space race.
These first astronauts were some of the bravest pioneers in the history of exploration.
they each have stars named after them. Navi for Grissom (his real name was Ivan), Regor for Chaffee and Dnoces for Ed White II. - Sornos, on 10/29/2008, -3/+7Amazing photo. He must been nervous as all hell.
On a bit of a tangent here, I'm looking for a photo during one of the Moon missions. One of the later ones I think. It's a photo of one of the astronauts looking out of a porthole on (I think) the return trip. All you see is his face barely lit up from light of the window. His face is stubbled and he looks exhausted. I've been looking for that photo for a long while. Anyone see it? - schizogony, on 10/29/2008, -0/+4Welcome to 1999!
- Leviathan433, on 10/29/2008, -0/+4Go team semantics!
- dickbain, on 10/29/2008, -2/+5GIF?
Odd that the "low res" is a GIF. And the "hi res" is a similar sized jpg. - nastri83, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Wouldn't it be Team Semantics?
- Suzilla, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2Yes. On the set of "Walker".
(Thank you.) - alpha19, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2Even though you are a gigantic moron and deserve no attention... I still felt the need to correct you on the less important issue. GREEN background... that's why they call it a GREEN screen.
- igyigyigy, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3It's cool BECAUSE it was 43 years ago :)
- xeomage, on 10/29/2008, -0/+260 years after that... maybe a space elevator?
- Saitekc, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1Totally
- alphgeek, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1You get all your factual information from movies cobber? You seen The Matrix yet? WOW! MINDBLOWING!
- shitdigga, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1glugluglugluglug.....buuuuurrrrrrrrrp!....(wipes mouth with left wrist).....AND DONT YOU FORGET IT!!!
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -1/+2***** cold war hatred.
***** you. - Leviathan433, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1I see what you did there...
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -1/+2the first "astronaut" to do so, but still the second man to do an EVA. deary me... also, good old conspiracy "theory" nuts. thats what they are, THEORIES... ***** mindless idiots the lot of em.
- DonCreech, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1I think you're correct, actually, but what of it?
- batguano, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1misleading... semantically he was the first 'astronaut' to do so.
Calling American spacemen 'astronauts' and Russian spacemen ''cosmonauts' is silly: They are both spacemen. I drive a truck, Brits drive a lorry... ***** still gets to the store. - alphgeek, on 10/29/2008, -1/+2The space race was one of the few positive things to come from the cold war. It culminated in the Apollo-Soyuz test project in 1975 when an American spacecraft and a Soviet spacecraft docked in orbit.
- chevyorange, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1Uh, nothing the way things are going....
Sigh. - assayer, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1yeah, that was my mistake, thank you anyway
- kinerry, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1Photoshopped
The shadows are all wrong - antoniojvr, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1This link goes to some verbiage and links to much higher res pictures of this awesome moment in time.
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_ ... - lefthandpisces, on 10/29/2008, -2/+2Everybody knows this was filmed on a soundstage with a Earth backdrop...
- nepidae, on 10/29/2008, -0/+0This is photomontaged. I can tell by the pixels, and having seen a lot of 'tages in my time.
- ajbarthe, on 10/29/2008, -1/+1It's amazing what we have done is such short time. I remember reading that most Americans did not believe we would EVER make it to the moon. Since then, we have been back many times and companies are creating commercial airlines for space exploration. Perhaps in 20 years it will be common to go on a Lunar Vacation.
- itspuddingtime, on 10/29/2008, -1/+1technically the title is correct. White was the first astronaut to walk in space. Leonov was the first cosmonaut to walk in space. I love arguing semantics.
- ww917352, on 10/29/2008, -1/+1Oh, gross!
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -1/+1tell that to the millions slaughtered in conflicts of cold war in places like korea.
- danconia, on 10/29/2008, -2/+1Damned product placement for those no good Hand-Held Self-Maneuvering Units... so cliche!
