- ortucis, on 05/25/2008, -3/+88Mars has pretty ***** graphics.
- carpespasm, on 05/25/2008, -2/+82NASA's so cool. I wish we spent as much money on them as we used to.
- Chairboy, on 05/25/2008, -0/+63They didn't "land" so much as they "fell with style".
- maybeishould, on 05/25/2008, -2/+48Wow. If the Phoenix survives landing, it will be an amazing success. After all, it isn't easy to land vertically on a planet many millions of miles away.
- inactive, on 05/25/2008, -1/+45True. NASA is the only program I WANT the government to spend more money on.
- LucasKane, on 05/25/2008, -1/+37WE'LL DO IT LIVE
- BoobieMan, on 05/25/2008, -0/+25i hope they find oil
- iFrikkenR, on 05/25/2008, -2/+23Well no, but Viking 1 & 2 did it back in the 70's without the computing power that thing has now to self-correct and whatnot. I'm sure it'll be fine
- psevium, on 05/25/2008, -2/+21Heh, yeah. I have every confidence that NASA has everything covered, but it seems so risky from that video. It seems after the bouncy ball landing of the last probe, they'd go for that too, but now they're just basically "***** that, we'll do it even cooler this time, watch me land this thing"
- inactive, on 05/25/2008, -0/+18If I could get there over the weekend and be back on Monday, yes.
- seantubridy, on 05/25/2008, -0/+17Let's just take a second and think about what is happening here. Humans built something that can travel millions of miles through space, land on another planet and collect information and send it back to us. I can't even begin to imaging all the things that could go wrong. If all you can think to say is that the animation is crappy, there's something wrong with you.
- stephenmeb, on 05/25/2008, -1/+15They haven't landed successfully with rockets since Viking. I think the rovers landed with some "airbag" type things.
- willaggs, on 05/25/2008, -0/+12Just make sure you pack a flashlight and it should be cool.
- jedisushi, on 05/25/2008, -0/+12Dugg for Boldly Going!
- svensksvamp, on 05/25/2008, -2/+13I love the way Nasa stole the youtube button.
- Borgcube636, on 05/25/2008, -0/+11No, I hear there's been a demonic invasion there.
- crial, on 05/25/2008, -0/+10Another neat fact is that there has not been an successfully landing on any planet or moon at the poles. Normally all the ships land near the equator! This will be a major success if they can pull it off. Another neat thing about the landing site is that just below a small layer of dirt is a thick layer of ice!
- marially, on 05/25/2008, -2/+12
I read an article saying that NASA hasn't had a successful landing in more than three decades since the Viking landers in 1976, and the last time they tried was in 1999 but it crashed. But what about the rovers Spirit and Opportunity that are up there right now? They got there in 2004 - isn't that included in their success? This is all very cool - can't wait to see what happens. - zaldoe, on 05/25/2008, -0/+10decent resolution video here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22425001/vp/24673400#2 ...
- lololol1, on 05/25/2008, -0/+10dugg for toy story
- bkkenny, on 05/25/2008, -3/+13WOW!!! It says that pictures may be available as soon as tomorrow!
One a separate note, would anybody else like to go to mars? - smackjack, on 05/25/2008, -0/+10I'm guessing they don't have the bouncy ball this time because the probe isn't mobile. It's kind of useless when you have deflated balloons all over your work station.
- DaFunk, on 05/25/2008, -0/+9Did they hire the BSG guys to make that? Since when does NASA use shaky-cam?
- overkilpro, on 05/25/2008, -0/+8Don't forget to bring some ducktape too.
- Bicx, on 05/25/2008, -0/+7Because God can't create life on Mars, only Earth.
- leha, on 05/25/2008, -2/+9I wish that US spent on NASA 1/10th of what is wasted on military. For reference: military .5 - 1 trillion vs NASA 17 bn. But I guess killing people is more important then space exploration in this God loving/fearing country.
- inactive, on 05/25/2008, -2/+9if we can get them to believe there are terrorists on alpha centari, i bet they will find a way to get us there before bush's term is over.
and you wont see any landers using solar. they will all be fueled by the raw, expensive power that only oil can provide. - maybeishould, on 05/25/2008, -1/+7Yes, I would like to go. Establishing a permanent human presence on another world is the only way to guarantee humanity's survival.
- breadfred, on 05/25/2008, -2/+8How much did your parents spent on your education? Sue your college for every penny they spent for you on schooling, as it obviously has been worthless. I think YOU are the failure here.
- nixfu, on 05/25/2008, -0/+6
WATCH ON TV:
a) SCIENCE CHANNEL 7pm EST.
b) NASA TV 6pm EST - puttly, on 05/25/2008, -0/+6Spirit and Opportunity had triangular airbags, the Phoenix is pure rocket propulsion landing because it was too heavy to safely land with airbags.
- inactive, on 05/25/2008, -0/+6The landing looks incredibley risky compared to the one used by Opportunity and Spirit. The entire spacecraft is exposed. What would happen if they landed on a large rock and tipped over?
- Weedduder, on 05/25/2008, -0/+6If Mars had air I bet you could grow some kick ass weed in that soil.
Martian Red....wow... - cquinnd, on 05/26/2008, -1/+7Then we'd have to invade.
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+5Have you tried Rekall?
- Findeton, on 05/25/2008, -0/+5"With all the money NASA gets"
You must be kidding. NASA's budget's been cut and cut and cut year after year since the Apolo misions ended. - beernutz, on 05/25/2008, -0/+5Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids.
In fact, it cold as hell! - maybeishould, on 05/25/2008, -0/+5NASA needs a lot more money. Sadly, NASA is not a priority for a possible future president: Barack Obama.
- maldovix, on 05/25/2008, -0/+5that's the stupidest thing I've ever read
- valkyries, on 05/25/2008, -0/+5Nasa barely gets any money these's days. back in the apollo days they got 4% of the gdp now its like 0.25 of 1% of the gdp
- MadOgre, on 05/25/2008, -0/+5Needs NIN music...
- ligyron, on 05/25/2008, -0/+5In the video, they make it seem like the thruster landing is reactive and hard to balance. In actuality, if the lander sways more than a couple inches to one side, something has gone terribly wrong
- Twenty5, on 05/25/2008, -0/+5Fingers Crossed!!! All the best for the Phoenix!
- schnikies79, on 05/25/2008, -0/+4It's fairly well known that free of dust the Martian sky is blue. Why not link to NASA directly instead of posting *****.
http://www-mgcm.arc.nasa.gov/mgcm/HTML/FAQS/sky.ht ... - spriggig, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4The landing was, by all accounts perfect. "It went better than the best simulation we ran."
- ihazstatus, on 05/25/2008, -0/+4I think the plan is to land it in a desert like area to avoid such a risk...
- smackjack, on 05/25/2008, -1/+5Well Bush said that humans would go to mars in 10 to 20 years. I'm thinking he should be the first to go on a one way ticket.
- vodkataime, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4"My Fellow Citizens, at this hour American and Coalition Forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Mars, to free its people and to defend Earth from the grave danger of alien bears that shoot laser beams out of their eyes. On my orders, Coalition Forces have begun striking selected targets of military importance to undermine Saddam Husein's ability to wage war...We have no ambition in Mars, except to remove a threat and restore control of the planet to its own humanoid civilization...The people of the United States and our friends and allies will not live at the mercy of an outlawed regime that threatens the peace with Weapons of Mass Destruction, we will meet that threat now, with our space marine regiment...We will defend our freedom, we will bring freedom to others and we will prevail. God bless our country and all who defend her."
- deckard29, on 05/25/2008, -1/+5just checking in to say good luck to my alma matter the university of arizona who is largely responsible for this. i know a few guys that are working on this and they have really poured their heart and soul into this project.
