- ImagineFreedom, on 03/12/2008, -1/+136This looks like the beginning of a new arms race.
"The Japanese have an eight-inch paper spaceplane! We must build a sixteen-inch paper spaceplane! For the Homeland!" - whiteknives, on 01/24/2008, -3/+130Am I the only one surprised that Japan's origami plane hasn't been embossed with some form of Hello Kitty logo...or a picture of some girl making a peace sign?
- ieataquacrayons, on 01/24/2008, -0/+114Hope it lands in my backyard...
- sundancekid503, on 01/24/2008, -0/+84Happens to be the same day the Americans are testing their first tactical spitball
- brevetoxin, on 01/24/2008, -0/+63What? You have no faith in the heat resistant chemicals they've treated it with?
- angusm, on 01/24/2008, -0/+47If it's anything like all the paper airplanes I used to make as a kid, it will get blown onto a garage roof somewhere and no one will ever see it again. A tragic end to a bold scientific experiment.
- stackered, on 01/24/2008, -0/+42it has been treated to withstand the temperatures. read the article.
- DeskFlyer, on 01/24/2008, -3/+44I don't think it will burn up. It has extremely low mass and I think the very thin upper atmosphere should decelerate it to subsonic speeds by the time it begins to encounter the required amount of atmospheric friction capable of torching it. Just my 2ยข.
- zheisey, on 01/24/2008, -2/+33sounds reary reary coor!
- rey1867, on 01/24/2008, -4/+35The Japanese are so damn cool
- imdeanlabouty, on 01/24/2008, -0/+30They pretend there is scientific basis for this, but you can tell they just thought it'd be a col thing to do.
- legendxx, on 01/24/2008, -2/+30you obviously have no idea how this works.. the reason things 'burn' up as then enter the atmosphere is because of friction caused by air on the high speeds of objects as they travel through space.. a paper airplane is very unlikely to have a terminal velocity that reaches anywhere near fast enough to cause air to burn.
It doesn't magically get very hot at the edge of our atmosphere for no reason. - AnthonyA7, on 01/24/2008, -1/+29Oh, I see. Your extensive experience and training in the fields of aerospace and materials engineering allow you to make such a broad, misconstrued, insulting comment.
Wait- never mind, you haven't the slightest ***** idea about any of it. - mortigon, on 01/24/2008, -0/+28Ha, jokes on you, I already have the thing on ebay
- DiggMasterJ, on 01/24/2008, -1/+28I'd like to see the Japanese guy who pilots that back to earth.
- brentinkc, on 01/24/2008, -4/+31Not to mention the fact that they heat-treated it. Perhaps you could rebut a little better if you RTFA.
- yivkX360, on 01/24/2008, -1/+26And if someone finds the dart before them, the engineers at Tokyo University have written a message in several languages saying: "This plane flew from the International Space Station.
"Please return the plane to Japan Origami Plane Association."
I am so writing that on a plane and putting it in my friends back yard. - andrewcsayer, on 01/24/2008, -0/+25It would be cool if they could attach a small lightweight camera to it.
- MikeSD34, on 01/24/2008, -0/+20Or a GPS equipped camera toaster.
- hakz, on 01/24/2008, -2/+22The Japanese are ***** amazing. How come they are always awesome?

- MikeSD34, on 01/24/2008, -0/+15Lawsuit. If I got a paper cut from this thing I'd want money for pain, suffering, and damages damn it! I mean look at the nose on that thing, somebody could lose an eye!
- bluemist, on 01/24/2008, -1/+14They are trying to find out if the Macbook Air survives inside a manila paper coated with the heat-resistant chemical.
- shifty2, on 01/24/2008, -0/+12I would not be surprised if a giant robot or Kaiju tried to blast it out of the atmosphere and a team of Power Rangers show up and save the day.
- d3dm, on 01/24/2008, -0/+12Any guess to what the final words will be right before the plane is released?
"TAKE OFF EVERY ZIG!" - Scienceisfun, on 01/24/2008, -0/+12So you're the one responsible for CSI!
- suinmind, on 01/24/2008, -0/+11To Japanese taxpayers:
money well spent. - bludragn0, on 01/24/2008, -1/+12I wish I was a Swedish dildo maker.

- caesar0801, on 01/24/2008, -0/+8I'm just thinkin' they should put a reward for sending it back if you find it...
cause I don't think I would send it back... man, a souvenir from outer space? No way I'm just gonna give that up... - Emnsta, on 01/24/2008, -2/+10Origami Plane Association
...... - wphj, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9Ok, I'm just putting this out there. They say it will "most likely land in the ocean"
What if it doesn't!? What if this thing hits a person? a house? - greenlight2001, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9Turn in your ***** nerd card! Dropping a paper ariplane from SPACE?! That's just plain awesome!
