- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Comment abuse... Figured I'd share the wallpapers I made for myself using of the image. They are widescreen/2560x1600. Crop/Resize them yourself if you have a different ratio/resolution screen. Enjoy.

/wrists - Toasterstrudull, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I dont know why, but this picture is so much cooler than a normal picture of the sun.
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11because blue is sexy.
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Someone needs to submit a picture of a picture.
It'd definitely hit the front page. - GaffleSnipe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Lot's more pics here (the actual source) http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/gallery/bestofsoho.html
Just like Hubble, this little project has a site with a gallery :)
SOHO Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. - AKA a satellite devoted to observing the sun. A joint cooperation between NASA and ESA. - SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Thanks guys. I now feel like a complete idiot. I opened it and right clicked, which of course failed.
I didn't think to right click the link itself.
Thanks again - benguild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Right click link > Save Link As.
Or if you're in IE, Right Click, Save Target As. - screensnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I didn't click the link, because I was told to never look directly at the sun. I think it takes that as a sign of aggression or something. I'm surprised you guys didn't know that.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Might have something to do with the fact that it doesnt burn your eyes out.
- ExplosiveNixon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks for sharing those, Snyder; they make great wallpapers
- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3mmmm..... pictures.....
- jhourcle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The color of the image denotes the frequency of the filters used (EUVI on STEREO has similar filters to SOHO/EIT, and they use the same colors)
A mosaic of all 4 filters : http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/stereoimages/preview/preview05.shtml
blue (linked above) is 171 Angstrom
red is typically used for 304 Angstrom : http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/stereoimages/preview/preview04.shtml
green is 195 Angstrom : http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/stereoimages/preview/preview06.shtml
yellow is used for 284 Angstrom (no idea why there aren't ones on STEREO's website yet) - gravis86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's actually a tiff, a picture file (it's 1800x1800 px). If you right-click it and select "Save as source" you can then open it with Preview or Photoshop or the like.
Edit: beaten to it. :(
Damn my slow typing. - jhourcle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GaffleSnipe : That's not a SOHO EIT image. EIT is only 1024x1024. [http://umbra.nascom.nasa.gov/eit/ ] STEREO's SECCHI telescopes are 2048x2048 (SECCHI/EUVI took the image linked to) [http://secchi.lmsal.com/EUVI/ ]. (and the upcoming SDO EVE will be 4096x4096 [http://lasp.colorado.edu/eve/ ])
If you want more STEREO images (and movies), see [http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/gallery.shtml ]. - cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like these better - http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/bestofsoho/bestofsoho.html

(ignored text area, and just went for the Hue/Saturation/Overlay stuff) - Captj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No! Are you serious? I can't believe I was beat to saying some silly comment like this lol.
Drats. - pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I ordered a pair of professional stereoscopic viewing glasses last week, I've been poking around the NASA site and have found that there are a LOT of stereoscopic images online, including Mars and just about everything else.
This inspired me to play around to see if I can create my own stereoscopic photos and I found it's really easy.
I just set my camera down and aimed it at my desk, pushed the delayed snap button and moved away.
Took the picture then moved the camera over a few inches and tipped it in just a touch to make sure it was still aimed at the same spot. Loaded the two pics in Gimp and pasted them side by side into one big slide with all black background.
Viewed the image full screen (21" CRT), looked in the center of the two images then crossed my eyes. It took a few seconds to get the hang of it but I was able to see a full blown 3D photo of my desk in full color! Freaking cool!
Now I'm going to build a special mount for my tripod that will let me slide the camera left and right so I get consistant results every time. I've always liked stereoscopic photos!
I can't wait until the new glasses come in. I'm also going to order a pair for looking at the type of images like I mentioned above so you don't have to cross your eyes. I may buy extra pairs and send them to my family in London so I can send them 3D photos from home..
Story dugg. - ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's like the king of planets!
- tiroger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I remember it from Third Eye Blind's album, Blue.
Nice picture. - Caleb83, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I'm not denying the awesomeness of this picture... In fact, I would be interested in seeing several pictures of the sun with their own narrow spectrum of light.
Here's what I'm curious about. Is there some sort of picture flooding campaign going on here on Digg? There just seems to be a whole lot of pictures showing up, too much to be a coincidence. Or is it just that slow a newsday? Or is the rationale "If we oversaturate the news section with pictures, then a picture section is likely." I just want to know what's going on with all these pics. - Grok22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Like our definition of a planet is precise anyways
- Andross07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HaHa, I had to Digg this one, there's just no say about it. The Blue Sun has always been one of the coolest pics out there.

1018 diggs - fabioromeu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0isn't that a cover of a Third Eye Blind album?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3The sun is by far the hottest planet in our solar system
- chip0wa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That's hot.
/paris hilton accent - gravis86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I don't think anyone got the fact that they called it a planet in the article.
- streamcast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0There was a lunar eclipse last saturday night. It was a full moon which turned gelly red. Just awsome!

- DayTripper47, on 10/12/2007, -35/+3If only the sun really looked like that

What is Digg?
