edit: wow, that last site has some really awesome pictures, go there first - jord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29"From 5000 Kilometers" ....
umm... first of all these pictures were not taken from 5000km away from the sun..
the 5000km is a scale on one of the images to give you a perspective of size... not distance from the camera... - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Thanks for reminding me what the sun was called. Ever since I got that screwdriver lodged in my temple things have been... wait, what?
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I was expecting it to be more hi-res...
- asteron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I think comment abuse is fine in this case.
If these pictures were taken FROM 5000km we would never have a satellite live long enough to relay them. Just because it has "5000km" in the scale does not mean thats how far away they were taken.
Whats worse a blogger who blogspams? A blogger who doesnt know what he talks about.
Burying this as inaccurate. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The blog's author violates the Google AdSense ToS: http://adsense.blogspot.com/2006/12/ad-and-image-placement-policy.html
- MrSalty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Cool pics, but inaccurate description. The pictures were taken from Earth --- specifically, a Swedish telescope on the Canary Islands. Here's a link with a more detailed description, courtesy Astronomy Picture of the Day: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap021114.html
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8that's hot...
- discreet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8more comment abuse :) but here's a high res video

- rowanjl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Only if NASA suddenly became a Swedish organization...
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5thank you. and the scale bar at the bottom shows the how big is 5000 km. 5000 km from 5000 km would subtend an angle of about 53 degrees. the bar produces an angle of 4-5 degrees at reading distance. that makes the camera's distance about 57500 km. and considering that an average human eye would be able to resolve finer features than pixels on my screen, the distance could easily be in ballpark figure of 80-90K km.
buried article as inaccurate. - node3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The pictures were taken from Earth (stated in the article devin linked to).
No need to play up these photos. Even from Earth they are wonderful. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't think it has anything to do with retinas getting fried.
Isn't it more due to the black body temperature of the sun (about 5700 K -- this is unexplained science btw, why its visible surface is so cool when its outer atmosphere is millions of Kelvin)? Here's a scale approximating the colors of that temperature: http://www.techmind.org/colour/coltemp.html As you can see, it's a very near white color.
Note that the blue in the sky doesn't have anything to do with black bodies though; it's due to the phenomenon "Rayleigh scattering".
What I don't get is actually why space photos of Sun is so yellow when the black body temperature should say it's pretty light-light-yellow?
Do astronauts in space see the Sun as more yellow, and it is atmospheric interference? Or is this false colors being printed? - burningmonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Except that the earth is around 150,000,000 km from the sun. So, your estimate is a little off, jhshukla.
- diggthisman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4let's toss paris hilton into that firing pit. i bet she won't say "that's hot" ever again.
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@kirakun, that's just your retina getting fried.
- podwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not from a probe-it's from the Swedish Solar Telescope on the Canary Island of La Palma.
Yep-cool picture, incredibly inaccurate title. The pic is taken from Earth, the scale on the pic is what's 5000km. It'd be nice if submitters actually bothered to know what they were writing about before submitting. - resplence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't believe no one mentioned Van Gogh.
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was expecting it to be more intense...
- mickoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Weeew that's hot!
- moncef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2diggworthy story if I've ever seen one.
- johnnyzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While I am not sure, I am almost positive these images originated from either Science or Nature as published by this group:
http://www.astro.su.se/groups/solar/solar.html
Not from the blog author... - ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nah, looks like an orange.
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@whoever dugg me down:
obviously i was being sarcastic at some people not using adblock+ and a few good filter lists out there.
I like google ads because they do not have flash/gif stuff. but they still try to stand out from the rest of the pages content. creates a kind of visual anomaly for me. - jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@burning monk.
oops. i forgot to mention that i had one of earlier comments in mind. it said that it was "to give you a perspective of size... not distance from the camera..." meaning a human at approx that distance with appropriate shielding and light filters would see the spot as shown in the image. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Incredible pictures of the sun .. probably the best I've ever seen... but 720x522 is hardly "high-resolution". Thanks devindotcom for posting actual HIGH RES links.
- vtsquire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The eye of Sauron is upon us...
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't think the sun would look like much of anything from 5000 km.
- Catchpen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's nothing. You should of seen the brisket on my pit last week after turning around for 3 minutes.
- burningmonk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What are these "ads" you speak of?
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2From 5000km....haha... kidding me?? LOL.
How easily people make claims and end up making a fool of themselves. - ThetaDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1amusing that something so representative of life to human beings looks so organic up close...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Sun looks torn and tatterred to me...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks creepy and scary.
- tofuninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wonder what the shutter speed was

- papavb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1(Paris Hilton) That's Hawt!
- Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know what probe this is from? This is interesting and I wouldn't mind seeing more photos of it.

Careful talking about the "surface" of the sun. You'll just get this guy
http://www.thesurfaceofthesun.com/
all excited. Apparently the sun is solid. Of course, you have to throw out a few silly concepts like Newton and Einstein to make that work, but what's a little math between friends.
(heh - the captcha for this was STArM - funny) - marc26uk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"High-resolution pictures of our star, the Sun, seen from 5000km" ...
"Thanks for reminding me what the sun was called"
... isn't our sun actually called 'sol' ? So it should technically be: "...pictures of our sun, Sol, seen from 5000km" - kirakun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why is the sun always shown reddish in pictures? Whenever I look up the sky, I see it bright white.
- segv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@jhshukla, burningmonk: Between header and first picture, unless you have adblock enabled :p
- Picard102, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, I can see my house from here.
- lookadeez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's the reason for the season!! I am appalled at how these people are taking the Sungod out of the holidays!! Disgusting
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Blogspam. These images are stolen from NASA.
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1where are the ads?
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The photos are of the sun and are awesome, but they sure as hell weren't taken at a distance of 5000 kilometers: they were taken from earth.
Marked inaccurate. -
