[PHOTO] Venus and the Moon - Close together on 5/19, and VERY Photogenic!

apod.nasa.gov — The two brightest objects in the night sky appeared to go right past each other last week. On the night of May 19, Earth's Moon and the planet Venus were visible in the same part of the sky, and at closest approach were less than one degree apart. The conjunction was captured in this image taken from near Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

I was out driving and noticed that bright spot and thought it was unusual. so I parked somewhere and stared at it for a while, during which i thought it was actually a UFO and I was expecting it to zip across the sky. Then since it didn't I got nervous and thought an asteroid might be heading our way to kill us... and after a few hours of other thoughts, angst and other mixed emotions, I got bored and went home.

    I'm happy to learn what it actually was now... thank you.

Yet, Québec City is in Québec (a fact), and Québec is in Canada (a fact). So why not add, Planet Earth at the end :)

  • tvbvt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I saw this last Saturday also. I was having a BBQ to celebrate my college graduation and one of the guest pointed out the same exact image. It was quite amazing. I had a gut feeling it was a planet but I thought it was Mars.
