- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29Oh My God! The Loch Ness Monster can fly!!!
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18i thought it was about the skunk strain
- Chairboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18No, there's no record of anyone actually having seen The Langoliers, so I doubt it.
- ColinCampbell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18How dare you, the Interwebs never lies.
- LarianLeQuella, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Try putting on a pair of NVGs as well. Sure, it washes out all the colour, but OMG what a panoramic view you get!
Yeah, I got to see some really amazing Northern Lights on a mission once where a student navigator was messing up his Celestial Navigation. Best clearance I ever got: "Turbo 45, you are cleared to wander aimlessly over the northern tier of the US and Canada." - chaos7, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26looks fake
- holydope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13There's something on the wing!
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I saw something like this on my way to Reykjavik in December a few years ago. The whole sky was lit up like that, above us, and seemingly below us (which actually isn't possible). There were about 6 of us on a 757 and I was sleeping by one of the windows at around 2am GMT. I woke up and looked outside, it was the most amazing and beautiful thing I've ever seen. I actually cried a little because it was so amazing.
I found out about a month later that on that night was the strongest recorded Aurora in something like the past 50 years. - cutlass91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11THE LANGOLIERS!!!!! I wonder if anyone on the plane ever saw that movie and freaked out when they looked out their window...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11That is, in fact, how the wing of a 737-790 looks:
http://www1.airpics.com/showimg.php?imgid=107003
The jagged green edge at the front of the wing looks like compression artifacts to me. This was taken through the window of the plane and is heavily compressed, hence the somewhat poor quality. I wouldn't be so sure it was a fake. - EricJD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Looks like Windows Aurora
- oscarsonthepond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Chopped + 1/2
- tsaxer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Loch Ness monster! What you want?!
I need about tree-fitty. - Knightshadow23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It looks like it was modeled.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was thinking John Lithgow....same thing, different time.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nice. Seeing them in motion is even better...like a glowing, undulating curtain.
- soupnrc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Pretty sure that everyone who claims "photoshop" on this one is just a moron. It's just a really good/lucky shot from a lucky guy. Good post...
- Cowtastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Pretty cool. Makes me wish Digg not only had a pictures section but also a way to get dugg pics to cycle as wallpaper.
- HCJfilms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd know what it was but I'd still ***** myself on that flight...
- captainkool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Loch ness monsta!? Well just give the damn monsta tree fitty and he will go away.
- apothekari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Bastard...You beat me to it!
You wanna see somethin' REALLY scary? - 72Devilz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wasn't Willliam Shatner on that flight?
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looks like a southwest plane wing to me, they have orange colored wings.
- stealthduke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah.... and I'm guessing this one is equally photoshopped? The photographer has even posted his equipment and camera settings.
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0523538/L/ - stealthduke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sometimes the large storms cause problems with the radio communications when flying in the arctic. The navigation equipment is relatively untouched (they use satellites to align their positions most of the time), but there are always Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) when large solar storms are anticipated.
- deadcow231, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Trippy.
- Blazekun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, just the space time continuum. Next they will be chased by thousands of metal things will lots of spinning teeth eating the planet. They will get back on the plane and fly back through and all the wine and beer will be the best they ever had. Then a little girl will say "Look at the new people mommy!" And everything will be right again.
- Jergens, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I saw the northern lights from a jet flying over the tip of Greenland (on my way to England). Unfortunately, they were pretty dim and not that spectacular. Nonetheless, it was cool to watch.
- gadalla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thats cool, but id be freaking out if i saw something like that outside of my window at 30,000 ft
- hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Trust me...I'm full of fright. ;-)
- nonchallant0819, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1This is a great story... found this one through http://www.google.com

http://www.TopNotchCarpentry.com - jesuschrysler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4What's this, a picture of something? I've never seen anything like this before, it's weird/fake.
- dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3oh shut up about your damn picture section!!!
the only thing that's going to accomplish is low traffic like the videos section, except worse - fossor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2but wouldn't the lights interfere with the planes navigation?
"Auroras are now known to be caused by the collision of charged particles (e.g. electrons), found in the magnetosphere, with atoms in the Earth's upper atmosphere (at altitudes above 80 km). These charged particles are typically energized to levels between 1 thousand and 15 thousand electronvolts and, as they collide with atoms of gases in the atmosphere, the atoms become energized."- wikipedia - jake3988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The plane was completely (and really obviously) computer generated.
However, like submitter states, if I really was on a plane and could see the northern lights... it would be sweet. Too bad that picture is 100% bogus. - experienceha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow. This reminds me of that Twilight Zone movie. Where that alien rides on the wing of the plane and Chevy Chase hangs his head out of a PLANE window and fights it off.
...
..
.
Just Sayin' - bubbahubba5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, that was disappointing. Lots of stuff can be fairly represented on film but the northern lights are a bit like the grand canyon, until you see it with your own eyes it's just a special effect.
Even if that photo is a real picture it's still terrible, it's the difference between steam from a kettle and a thunderstorm. - Alkaid210ly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aurora shots typically take 5 to 15 seconds to get the proper saturation. At 700 kph that would blur the background stars. Even hand held shots blur easily.
I have taken aurora shots as well as astrophotography for 15 years.
My opinion, fake, just pulls down the credibility of digg.
Sorry. - halfgook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3danky NLs can get you to 30,000 ft.
- templest, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I was, myself, smoking some norther lights just earlier;
what a coincidence! - justagirl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4wow
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"There's a man on the wing of this plane!!!"
- moschops, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4What are the chances the interior of the plane would be dark enough to get no reflections, and that they could get a long enough exposure from a window without bouncing all over the place so the window is a blurry haze? I agree with others - probably a PS job but amazing how many on the site it came from didn't even blink an eye before praising it. Maybe PS has turned us all into doubting Thomases... maybe that isn't such a bad thing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I wonder how many ppl called this in as a UFO sighting.
- soupnrc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yea, well, I've been dugg 3 times and you've been buried 6... Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
- atomicze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1finally! i have found out what the name of that movie is! i saw it when i was a little kid, and so many times through my life i recalled scenes from it and wondered what the title was. thank you.
- stampeder, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9The lights look like a real photo, but the plane's wing is clearly fake. Anybody who thinks that is an original untouched photograph seriously needs glasses or at the very least, a gentle slap back into reality.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4That's "I wish I were," not "I wish I was." You must use the subjunctive case.
- tackle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2over rated.
- graberc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I don't care how accurate a fake it is, that thing was done in photoshop. . .Especialy the lense flair on the edge of the winglet - now that is too much
