As for the gas bubbles, the article doesn't say they SURROUND the galaxies, they are just big and in the general area.
This is like scientists suddenly discovering a BLOB of people in India and dubbing them all a single entity... "The India mass of human flesh is the largest single mass of flesh on earth!"

It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive Earthmen or merely enslave them.
