- lok3n, on 11/05/2007, -1/+84Actually, I have seen this before -- two Starbucks across the street from each other. That's the ultimate dueling blackhole experience.
Thank you, Lewis Black. - Mewchu11, on 11/04/2007, -7/+75Somewhere out there two glaciers are melting in the dead of night

Chandra X-ray Observatory, someone should taz those a-holes. - moocow1452, on 11/04/2007, -2/+34Someone call muse...
- edein, on 11/04/2007, -0/+31that mean they will merge in several hundred million years minus 5. Sooner then you think!

- ItsMyWii, on 11/04/2007, -0/+19And it will tear the fabric of the space time continuum, creating a parallel universe where we all use AOL in the future, and GMail is considered a thing of the past.
- Kr4t05, on 11/04/2007, -1/+20It truly is rare to find someone capable of utilizing the ancient art-form know as the pun. +1 from me.
- fusionFactor, on 11/04/2007, -1/+19You're the queen of the superficial.

- InfiniteNothing, on 11/04/2007, -1/+14I think you think black holes are more sentient than they are. The earth does indeed suck the sun in.
- davidrools, on 11/04/2007, -0/+12what are you talking about?? astronomy is out of this world
- deltaandroid, on 11/04/2007, -0/+12Black holes and Revelations!
- plastictaxi, on 11/04/2007, -0/+11I always get confused by the time scale - when they make predictions, do they take into account the time light (x-ray or whatever) took to get here?
Those black holes are 400 million light years away. they will meet in "a few hundred million years" -- let's say they are slow and will take ... 400 million years to join up in a sizzling, galaxy-blazing torrent of radiation. Does that mean now? tomorrow? Should we get ready for some gravitational waves to hit? (would we notice if they did?)
I think astrophysicists need their own verb tense to talk about the past as seen right now, and the future of something we only see as it was long ago. - Shorties, on 11/04/2007, -0/+10Actually it compresses but whatever
- edvas, on 11/04/2007, -0/+8http://www.bash.org/?99835
- latrosicarius, on 11/04/2007, -0/+8When these merge, it should create a very large Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) which are the most energetic emissions possible in the universe. GRBs are jets of the accreting matter that is forced out of the top and bottom rotational poles because of all the matter being squeezed in one small area very fast.
GRBs usually occur when a black hole swallows a dense star or star remnant like a white dwarf. The GRBs shoot out straight from each pole and can travel extremely long distances. If there is life on any planet unfortunate enough to be in the way of a GRB, it would likely be sterilized. A normal GRB is very rare, but it is so bright, that when it occur--even if originating in a distant galaxy, it is usually the brightest thing in the sky besides the sun, and can be visible during the day.
Since this GRB will be formed from something much more substantial than a black hole merging with a white dwarf, it will likely produce an exceedingly bright GRB, and this time, there might even be four jets instead of two (two from each of the black holes rotational poles). - InfiniteNothing, on 11/04/2007, -0/+7The moon sucking the earth in creates tides

- raithetarkon, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5Yes, because the fact that he can recognize some muse lyrics but doesn't happen to like them clearly means he is a dumb philistine who only loves hip-hop.
- rdank, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5Exactly what I thought of.
- demiurgency, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5That's awesome. I was just thinking of that exact same corner.

oops wrong song. :p - Nutt3rz, on 11/04/2007, -0/+4Ahaha, Muse is what popped into my head as well when I read the title.

Alrighty then!
So now we can see an effect before the cause? - adoggz, on 11/04/2007, -0/+3I've seen 2 on the same side of the street before. They weren't even 5 shops apart. It's starbucks, gamestop, dollar store, dry cleaners, starbucks

- inactive, on 11/04/2007, -3/+6Am I the only one who thought this was related to Super Mario Galaxy?
- raid517, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2Well scientists are good, but they still can't quite see 400 million years into the future. Like everyone though they tend to speak in relative terms - so what they are describing is what they see 'now' - which is in fact what happened 400 million years ago. (Or 50 light years ago, or 70 light years ago, or however far way the object they are studying is). Has this event happened yet? Well the predicted time-scale for a merger is several hundred million years, which while somewhat generalised probably means something n excess of the 400 million light year distance this object is from Earth. So the answer to this question is that it probably hasn't happened yet, but that the calculations and observations that scientists have made have given a very indication that eventually it will. Scientists can pretty accurately add up their calculations and subtract the time difference it takes for light from these objects to reach us - and still give a 'real time' prediction of when exactly events are likely to occur. I don't think scientists really need to adjust their language - I think people in general just need to try to understand science a little better.
Oh and just so I fit in with he majority of others here and don't seem to conspicuous, that video of a girl kissing a monkey was real neat wasn't it?
Digg used to be a cool place long, long ago. - ubergeek09, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2That's pretty cool.

Oh... Wait... You didnt mean that Starbuck... - Zaneris, on 11/04/2007, -1/+3I bury you all for not having the slightest understanding of how black holes work.
