- Gsydigger, on 11/16/2009, -3/+41NASA is probably about to get stormed by PETA
- homer524, on 11/16/2009, -3/+31I, for one, welcome our irradiated squirrel monkey overlords.
- skelooth, on 11/16/2009, -4/+32I approve. Its not like it's a widespread genocide / torture of monkies. It's a few handfuls of monkeys that will help scientists pave a way for all of this earth's creatures to get off this rock and inhabit the rest of the universe like the virus we are.
- sexybobo, on 11/16/2009, -1/+22its the only way we can be sure the rockets are safe for monkeys.
- NotAChickenHawk, on 11/16/2009, -1/+22Haven't I seen this movie before? Mathew Broderick, Helen Hunt, and a chimp named Virgil? Project X?
- puter, on 11/16/2009, -0/+14Um the answer to your question is directly addressed in the article...did you read it?
Read the section titled this: "How is this different from the radiation research NASA has done before?" - SirPessimism3rd, on 11/16/2009, -0/+133 words...mutant space monkeys.
- Coven, on 11/16/2009, -0/+13That's exactly what I came here to post.
- Apoc52, on 11/16/2009, -2/+14Remind me to say I told you so when one of these monkeys turns into the things and breaks out.
- Harabeck, on 11/16/2009, -1/+10Prime cash sink hole? NASA gets less than 1% of the federal budget.
- Schnelly, on 11/16/2009, -1/+10NASA has an enormous return on investment in numerous areas of the economy. Quit spouting off trite ***** when you know nothing.
- hereticoftruth, on 11/16/2009, -0/+8Yes. Moonshine has been shown to be detrimental to your health as well as that of pregnant women.
- maximilen, on 11/16/2009, -4/+11NASA should invite all the PETA big wigs and top supporters for a tour of the facilities, but instead of showing them the labs in New York, invite them to Cape Canaveral and lure them into a obsolete space rocket and send them to Mars.
- 3tcp, on 11/16/2009, -1/+8It would be nice if nasa's budget were large enough for it to deserve being called a cash sink hole. I think they would produce more valuable research and innovations than most of the stuff that the government spends money on.
- megamod, on 11/16/2009, -2/+9Dexter's super monkey character is one step closer to becoming a reality
- Tyrghast, on 11/16/2009, -3/+10I saw a great anti-PETA sign the other day, it said "Ever had leprosy? Thanks to animal testing, you wont!"
- JoeQuixote, on 11/16/2009, -0/+6swantamer
your're dedication to mother earth is admirable but the space age has brought about all kinds of advances in synthetics and such that have reduced the need for use of animal products for materials and medicines. advancing science sometimes gives greater benefit to the whole than the same money spent on band-aid fixes to the ecosystem. - fasda, on 11/16/2009, -0/+6Were talking about a few dozen monkeys that were bread in a lab not captured ones from the wild. There is no loss to the greater biological diversity of the earth here. They have to be bread by people because ones from the wild could be sick before they get irradiated.
- ShadyG, on 11/16/2009, -0/+6I came here to post a reply to someone who came here to post about "Project X", but was beaten to it.
- Harabeck, on 11/16/2009, -1/+7Animal testing happens all the time for other purposes.
- Harabeck, on 11/16/2009, -1/+6By what criteria are they the least important?
- artfiend77, on 11/16/2009, -1/+6For science, yes. For the cosmetics industry, no.
- giveer, on 11/16/2009, -0/+5I for one, think we should start basing ALL new scientific conclusions on multi-year-old research. In fact, to hell with that, I think the whole process should include more guessing. Oh! and hunches! We should use those too. That'll be great!
- fasda, on 11/16/2009, -0/+5I don't think you understand how radiation works.
- EndouOuto, on 11/16/2009, -5/+9If they had the chance they would do it to you .
- EndouOuto, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4"Animal models are *****."
You are incredibly stupid. - ifruit, on 11/16/2009, -1/+5Since 1976, about 1,400 documented NASA inventions have benefited U.S. industry, improved the quality of life and created jobs for not just Americans, but around the world as well.

I would say NASA is a good investment that gives good returns. - TyIzaeL, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4"***** those monkeys."
By your post, I would have figured that's the last thing you would have anyone do. - SammyboyKIDDAH, on 11/16/2009, -4/+8First greenpeace member.. Hello.
When our natural resources have run out, and when our population is far too big to maintain our human race upon the earth, what do we do?
Go to other planets, then solar systems... obvz.
HOW DO WE ACHIEVE THIS?
By researching, and implementing that research.
Would you rather HUMANS die of radiation poisoning in the quest to reach out there for our human race, or a ***** monkey.
'Nuff said. - 3tcp, on 11/16/2009, -1/+5Oh, you find it hard to believe, do you? I suppose you think it is easier to organize a bunch of studies and do new experiments than use the data that they already have from other tests?
- angusm, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4Irradiated squirrel monkeys:
Today, it's cruelty to animals.
Tomorrow, it's the premise for a really really bad TV series featuring the cute monkey with mutant super powers ("It's like McGyver meets Battlestar Galactica meets Mutant Ninja Turtles crossed with Lancelot Link, Sex and the City and the X-Files").
Won't somebody please think of the TV viewers? - SammyboyKIDDAH, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4I would digg you up 10times brother.
- SammyboyKIDDAH, on 11/16/2009, -2/+6Scientific research is NOT foolish OR unecessary, it is intelligent work, and also a necessity for human progression.
Also, huamans are the least important life form on this planet?
LUL
Speak for yourself on that one mate. - Narishma, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4What does Michael Jackson have to do with this?
- Mothrog, on 11/16/2009, -1/+4I recommend you as the first human test subject.
- 3tcp, on 11/16/2009, -1/+4I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that I hope they DO do radiation experiments on retarded human kids. However, I think it is only fair that they should get parental consent first, we did learn our lesson in the 50's.
- Chairboy, on 11/16/2009, -3/+6Obviously a clever ruse to lure PETA members into a chamber that can be launched into space. If anyone has this capability, it's NASA.
- bluddystool, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Monkey, this is Agent Honeydew! Help us!!
- edrodgers731, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2What, are you stuck in 1965? NASA is a "prime cash sink hole"?
I suggest you take a look at the annual "Death and Taxes" poster to see how much cash really goes into NASA. Look hard... The little NASA speck in the budget is kind of hard to find.
http://www.wallstats.com/deathandtaxes/ - yttrstein, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Why do they need to do it again? They already have all that data. MIT is awesome like that.
- du4l1ty, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Besides maybe Darpa.
- fasda, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2well since you need hundreds of pounds of fuel for every pound you launch into space we should find out if we even need to bother with that stuff.
- bonofosho, on 11/16/2009, -2/+4wow, so if you had two rooms, one with a monkey, one with a person, and a man with a gun to your head told you you had to kill one of them, you would choose the person. Your ***** up. What a strange world where people sympathise more with animals than with other people.
Now i know your thinking that these tests are voluntary and we should not harm anyone. But that is just not real-world. Yes, it sucks, but life will go on. Its not like these animals have a good life anyway, they are bred for science. Cruel, maybe, inhumane, maybe, the best option available...yes. - Outofthenight, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2With some of the decisions that American health insurance companies make, I fear that may already be the case, bonofosho.
- stinkybinky, on 11/16/2009, -1/+3I'm gonna go check reddit and see if those comments suck as bad as these. I don't have much hope.
- Outofthenight, on 11/16/2009, -2/+4There should be criminal penalties for anyone engaging in medical testing on non consenting humans. I didn't know about this particular set of experiments, and I'm disgusted with the (lack of) reaction to it when it came to light.
Thanks for the link, rmxz. - fasda, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2And if the save the animals bunch had a better priorities they wouldn't have bothered with saving pandas where they could have helped dozens of species
- giveer, on 11/16/2009, -2/+4@spyderveloce
It's not very often that someone would admit that they would rather have their mother die in an experiment because a monkey is more important than her, but good for you for being the first!
