- alexanderhazard, on 03/25/2009, -1/+54ms or no ms, im all for more images of the universe. especially in high res. *****'s humbling
- jemka, on 03/25/2009, -6/+40Is it still so fashionable to put down anything from Microsoft?
- diggface5000, on 03/25/2009, -0/+32I don't really care if it's Microsoft, Google, or some start up I've never heard of. It's fascinating stuff that I'm interested in seeing. When I watched Star Trek as a kid I never thought I'd be able access images of the universe on my own computer and actually explore it myself. You had to read it in a text book. It's neat.
- jemka, on 03/25/2009, -1/+25You rebel. The force of flash is strong with you.
- Khast, on 03/25/2009, -2/+25I was actually kind of hoping for Google Universe, with driving directions.
Drive 1,476 miles to Kennedy Space Center
Fly 4.8 Light years to unmarked road Turn Right
Fly 0.8 Light years to unmarked road continue left
Fly 8.2 Light years to Destination
Arrive at destination. - TheBlueVulcan, on 03/25/2009, -11/+30I like how everyone complains about "Silverlight crap" while Flash is complete garbage. I'm no fan of Microsoft's, but anything that can reduce our dependence on Flash is something I can get behind.
- juliocgrajales, on 03/25/2009, -1/+13Actually this is a good thing, builds competition for this planetary mapping and can bring us a step closer in providing more open and free ways to understand our universe. I mean imagine a kids all over the world, through whatever platform (Microsofts,Googles, hopefully another competitor) to provide a centralized depository for these images... and hopefully build a Google Earth like software for every single planet, every single star... ofcourse these are things that we are light years ahead of accomplishing but just imagine. Imagine one day just opening up a Planets Application and having the realtime images of that planet... I mean some might say boring... but there are a lot of kids out there that would say otherwise...
- numb, on 03/26/2009, -2/+12I dunno, competition makes me happy. If Google and Microsoft are competing to give me better access to cool stuff like this I can't complain. And if Microsoft creates something better than Flash that's cool with me too because the consumer wins when better products are created.
- splinter09, on 03/25/2009, -4/+14Image how long that slideshow will be! lol
- Terasiel, on 03/26/2009, -1/+10Microsoft then covered its end of the bargain by giving NASA 100 TB of pornographic images.
- Terasiel, on 03/26/2009, -0/+7Space walls! Didn't you listen to those random scientist?
- IrvineKinneas50, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7Do you know what Silverlight and Quicktime do? Quicktime plays multimedia and Silverlight is an API like Flash that can do anything from making games to self-contained websites.
Saying Quicktime is a competitor is like saying silverlight is a competitor to the xBox because you can make games on it or it's a competitor to OpenOffice because you can write a word processing app with it. You can write a multimedia-playing tool with Silverlight but that doesn't mean it's a multimedia player.
And if you were right you wouldn't have edited your comment over it. - LMN8R, on 03/26/2009, -2/+8Yeah! You go, girl! Calling things crap while simultaneously admitting that you've never tried it, in the face of overwhelmingly positive comments from people who did use it!
Awesome! You're well on your way to becoming a Cool Kid On The Internet. - graeh, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7A total lack of understanding of Flash, how it's improved for end users and community - and a bizarro angry personality.
I can't think of another product that's been pushed as hard, and improved beyond what's simply "profitable" with the target of "best practice" as consistently or quickly between generations. If you read/watch adobe developer blogs/videos, use Adobe Labs, and go through the API docs per gen, what they've done is ***** impressive.
Unfortunately - a large percentage of people who use flash for interactive/creative ***** don't follow the best practice, and use the freedom it provides to make crap (much of which is irritating/useless/or the wrong choice), which some less perceptive people see as an indictment of Flash, not the individuals use of it. It's like blaming oil paints and canvas for being ***** because you've seen a bunch of crappy oil paintings.
With the amount Adobe have done with the product - to respond to criticisms and go above and beyond - people who call Flash "crap" now, are people who don't want to be/can't be pleased. - timmyak, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5modern version of either? silverlight is as new as you can get! and how about moonlight? its an open source implementation of silverlight.
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -2/+6Meh, I've had porn folders larger than 100TB
- timmyak, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4if you knew anything you would know that they had www.worldwidetelescope.org for a long time!
- regularsteven, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4garbage developers make any language garbage
- XenoSNK, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3Why couldn't you just fly directly somewhere in space?
- MarkusX, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3Age of Empire was awesome.
- macmcraeart, on 03/25/2009, -11/+14compared to the flaming ***** nightmare that is quicktime and flash - silverlight is a ***** wet dream.
- konartis, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3Are ready? Already.
- IrvineKinneas50, on 03/25/2009, -4/+7What, exactly, makes flash complete garbage?
- nickcrz, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3catching up? to me World Wide Telescope is way better than Google Sky..
- ortucis, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3No, you will still get more LOLCATS... featuring moon or uranus in the background this time.
- IrvineKinneas50, on 03/26/2009, -1/+4I agree graeh, I have written apps and games using Actionscript 3.0 and Flash as a development platform is extremely powerful while maintaining ease of use. And the 3,0 VM, as abduln commented on, is much more efficient than previous versions.
Adobe's been on the ball with updating Flash to match the tech curve and also with other details like their extensive documentation and attention to detail. I remember shying away from flash during the time of Actionscript 2.0 only to come back a short time later and see the language completely revamped, the features extensively documented, and the performance greatly improved.
I'm still waiting on an answer as to why anyone would think that Flash is "garbage". The original post is getting diggs but nobody seems to have any idea why they're digging it. - numb, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3I think it's the 'n'.
- abduln, on 03/26/2009, -1/+4The fact that other people say it's complete garbage, of course, lol. I find most people who trash Flash don't have much experience with it, or trash it not on technical issues, but rather political issues (not saying that is TheBlueVulcan's claim).
There are some potential problems with some sites that use Flash, but it's not usually a problem with Flash itself, but rather implementation:
Many sites that use Flash don't offer text alternatives for Web browsers that don't use the Flash plug-ins, like Lynx or browsers for sight impared people. That's a Web site design flaw though, not a problem with Flash.
A Flash movie, out of the box, cannot control the address bar on a Web browser, so as you navigate a Flash movie, the state cannot be bookmarked in the browser (some Ajax sites have the same problem). This is mostly a problem when an entire site is contained in a single Flash movie. This is actually a real world problem that Adobe should address, but is fixable via 3rd party library, but generally is addressed by not confinding the entire site to a single Flash movie... Like the old joke... Patient says "Hey Dr., it hurts when I do this" Dr. says, "Then don't do that".
Flash can be a resource intensive VM, and this is something that falls to some degree onto Adobe to remedy. The reality is that it's a pretty robust and complicated VM and it performs pretty well for what it is. At the same time Flash doesn't scale-down well (mobile devices) and the reality is that Adobe needs to address this to avoid things like the iPhone debaucle, for example. It may be that the iPhone has only enough CPU to handle it's own platform and it's applet model, but perception is that Adobe is dropping the ball on this.
But Flash definitely is a nice and rich content development platform; it's badass frankly. That doesn't mean people have to love it, but if they are going to trash it, they should have quantifiable reasons, don't hate it just because. Oh I forgot.. this is Digg. - liamvickery, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2Yes, but let's all be honest, it's a lot more than the 'n.' Does that quicktime failure play .mov files in fullscreen yet? Or still no... Need a third party app to do that. When a third party app displays your format much better than the original says it for me. I ditched quicktime years ago. F U and your .mov Apple. Like we really needed that format. SRSLY.
- Frostek, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2If Microsoft were in charge of The Guide, then it would be time to panic...
- ncalishome, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2Garbage is perhaps too strong a word, but it would be nice if Flash did not require testing in various browsers. My company does a lot of Flash/Flex/AIR development, and especially with traditional Flash there are sometimes differences between the plugins that can mess up your day. I recall one time where a math bug we uncovered in the Mac version of the plugin was creating some bizarre results in our app, and it was not so easy to pin down.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -1/+3Will this mean Digg can expect to see more 'astronomy picture of the day' submissions? That wouldn't be so bad...
- bcassner, on 03/25/2009, -1/+3Ok, whether you like them or not, this is going to be a massive project that HAS potential to be awesome. That is if it is done right. Let's hope MS doesn't reinvent the wheel and uses the best software out there to do this whether it be open source or their proprietary software. If MS doesn't allow its' ego to get in the way this is going to be educational and fun.
- timmyak, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2It already exists and its sweet; www.worldwidetelescope.org. they are just getting more data.
- IrvineKinneas50, on 03/25/2009, -5/+7Since when was quicktime silverlight's main competitor? Silverlight is trying to replace flash, not quicktime.
Edit: I see you edited flash into your comment and then buried me, nice. - jbubbasmith, on 03/26/2009, -1/+3They better be royalty free images since WE ARE READY PAID FOR THEM.
I sure they won't be though. - ortucis, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2<a class="noob" href="http://wtfiswithhtmlcode" rel="won'twork">
- byronm, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2These aren't just images - but the data that goes with them as well. In raw format amatuer astronomers and schools and research facilitie can access this data through WWT and do whatever they want with it. I use WWT to pull in data for astrometry and to locate asteroids and neo's. Easy access to FTS data for what i need without having to create logins or access to the slow public sites that are bogged down.
- gcnaddict, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2clouds of radioactive gas, perhaps?
- tinyzorz, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2I think you mean imagine.
- rgalgozy, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2Well assuming that they are RAW and lets say somewhere around the region of 10k x 10k plus in resolution I would say that's really impressive. And its going to make maps.live.com's "birds eye view" that much more awesome and clear so I'm all for it.
- byronm, on 03/26/2009, -1/+3Dunno why people dugg you down.. Silverlight is great. It would be even better if most of the naysayers read the damned article and actually tried out the new WWT silverlight plugin to see how great it is. Oh yeah, the netflix quality is also superb as well in silverlight both in form & functionality.
- noboot, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2That is only true for American Citizens who are law abiding and pay their taxes.
But I am sure they will be offered royalty free... - Lewie, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2I could play AoE and AoE II forever.
- Maynza, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2Put them into photosynth!
- noboot, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1Open Source an image? I think they have a certain right to their wonderful wordlwide telescope program.
- kevinbowen, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Or a visual encyclopedia? Why, yes, it is called Worldwide telescope:
http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/Home.aspx
and it's free. Actually a pretty impressive application. - ptFoe, on 03/26/2009, -5/+6Microsft to charge users 1cents per pixel viewed
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -3/+4obligatory "holy ***** imagine that in porn" comment
