"Before the jokes regarding the President and intelligent life had subsided..." line - inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+7Don't! It'll be shot down!
- jericko, on 08/06/2008, -1/+8"Mike Meyer, the head of NASA's Mars efforts"
I wondered what he was doing after The Love Guru flopped. - Praelior, on 08/06/2008, -0/+7I have a feeling this is a whole lot of fuss about nothing. As much as people want to fantasize about there being evidence of past (or present) life on Mars, its much more likely the "findings" are just the Perchlorate chemical from the article yesterday.
- zlopez, on 08/06/2008, -0/+7The Martians are gonna be PISSED!
- freezerburn666, on 08/06/2008, -0/+7i fail to see how this non-announcement is more important than finding water
- dafragsta, on 08/06/2008, -0/+6"Amusingly, the scientists have been giving each soil sample brought on board a nickname, so the press conference was peppered with references to "wicked witch," "baby bear," "rosy red," and "sorceress."
Wait, are these guys scientists or pot dealers? - LeRenard, on 08/06/2008, -1/+7Life outside of Earth is so statistically probable it may as well be certain.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 08/06/2008, -0/+5ALERT THE INTERNET!
- odinfire, on 08/06/2008, -0/+5A "non-announcement" making the front page of digg... typical.

- Azulya, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Assuming they have thyroids, and that their thyroids are similar to ours, yes.
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4It's actually a difficult job. Just wait.

- d1a1s1, on 08/06/2008, -1/+4But what were the jokes?
- mad05963, on 08/06/2008, -2/+5Well, I guess if you say so, we should just believe you... but don't mind us if we look around before we make up our minds.
- Louay, on 08/06/2008, -0/+3its not water its a symbiote
- pbryan, on 08/05/2008, -3/+5At least if life is discovered on Mars, most likely creatures there did not suffer from thyroid gland disorders. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perchlorate
- dafragsta, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2"its much more likely the "findings" are just the Perchlorate chemical from the article yesterday."
You know dirt is made of a bunch of different things. - 2facetious, on 08/06/2008, -2/+4spoken like a true Christian...blind faith in the unknowable
- mebrad, on 08/06/2008, -2/+4***** MARS! I'm still miffed about the mysterious shadow person being a rock!

- Landlocked, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Let's send an astronaut there so there will finally be proven life on mars.
- jorichter, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Again? Dammit NASA
- lintmonkey, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1it's not a symbiote, it's a transformer
- HayString, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Why don't people just stick with getting their news on Mars & NASA from mars.jpl.nasa.gov?
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2marsrumours.woooop
- killcops, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1i like how they never outright say anything, just a good solid 'maybe, maybe not'
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1I wonder how fast it's gonna fall out of the solar system now
- slapded, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1marsrumours.info woooop
- thespanielator, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1www.marstechnica.com might be useful too.
- OpaqueMurdock, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Because its just the cover story that they have decided to go with...

- DestroyFascism, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Tundra in IR?
- Mightbiteyou, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1What a disappointment I was hoping for a story about how Nasa planned on shooting down Mars.
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Lol after all that "they are hiding evidence of life from us those bastards!".
- OpaqueMurdock, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Honestly, I am trying not to let my imagination run wild but this sounds exactly like the kind of story you would come up with if you got reigned in by the "powers that be" who didn't want people to get all crazy over a much more socially disturbing discovery. Funny how quickly this went from "briefing the president on a discovery more important than water" to "Eh, its just some perchlorate salts, look... its complicated, best not to worry about it. It will take a long time to figure out what it means".
It could be exactly that it looks like, over zealous scientist and a public hungry for exiting news about space exploration get a little rambunctious. But then its not like our government has never kept secrets from us. Hell, and I am just talking about the ones we now KNOW about. : P - Rudegar, on 08/06/2008, -2/+2i read it as "NASA shoots down Mac rumors: We're not sure what we've got"
:P - wynja, on 08/06/2008, -1/+1Good call, tell them we don't know what the ***** we're talking about. That's believable especially from NASA.
