- mikeophile, on 08/01/2008, -2/+8The guy in the picture looks like he was just "volunteered" to live on the moon.
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 08/01/2008, -0/+5"Yes, I'd like to buy a one way ticket to the Sea of Tranquility please...."
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -0/+4I just hope they won't make a reality show from their lives when they go there.
- ardnut, on 08/01/2008, -1/+4Does the moon have enough gravity to stop some of the "muscles wasting away", etc... type problems associated with living in space for long periods of time?
- J3h0vA, on 08/01/2008, -0/+3can I assign my wife for this?
- donjuan571, on 08/01/2008, -0/+3was that short for, "Canadian internet access?"
- gl77, on 08/01/2008, -1/+4yea anyone who has been remotely following NASA knows about this already, it's part of Project Constellation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Constellation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_(spacecraft)
Another goal of the project is to have a man on Mars in a little over 20 years
It's going to be a truly exciting time for space exploration - deanoplex, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2They will be working out but it will be with shovels, pickaxes and wheelbarrows.
- Troy64, on 08/01/2008, -6/+8I'm not going unless I have can internet access.
- prism01, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2I would like to volunteer. Where do I sign up?
- aterimperator, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1How does anyone become an astronaut these days?
Step 1: become astronaut
Step 2: get sent to the moon
Step 3: ??????
Step 4: Profit? Who cares about profit, you're on the ***** moon! - ericlander, on 08/01/2008, -4/+5Great to see a true revival of the space program. What a week too - First water vapors on Mars, and now this.
- aterimperator, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1If you find out, tell me.
- aterimperator, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Well seeing as how I've seen 3 news articles today about how a new pill might be able to trick our muscles into thinking they've experienced exercise, maybe NASA will take that and make it 10x better and use it.
- czernel, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1It's actually not really a smart idea to invest in returning to the moon. If we are sending anyone anywhere, it should be over to Mars. We can use present day technology to send humans to Mars within 10 years, we can produce fuel and oxygen on the planet surface with the natural resources found on Mars.
"In contrast to the comparative desert of the Earth's moon, Mars possesses veritable oceans of water frozen into it's soil as permafrost, as well as vast quantities of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, all in forms readily accessible to those inventive enough to use them. These four elements are not only the basis of food and water, but of plastics, wood, paper, clothing, and most importantly rocket fuel. " - The Case For Mars
Anyone wishing to study this further really should learn about Mars Direct.
Read "The Case For Mars" by Robert Zubrin. It's all right there. - Bigtruck, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1Where do we start with that comment? well, gravity for one....
- starmanjones, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1i'm not sure why this was dug down. i guess people haven't thought it through. there are other means to generate power but pound for pound and considering reliability and and maintenance factors...
the best rocket engines built used a nuclear reactor to heat propellant. comparatively they can use almost anything as propellant. handy when you're so far from the gas station. and while you are on sight it can be used to generate power. lots of power. staying alive can be measured in power.
so its double duty making it pound for pound an even better choice. - inactive, on 08/01/2008, -1/+2And where is the money for this going to come from? More debt financing from China? Let the private sector do space, and let's fix our problems here instead of abandoning the ship.
- shiftless, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1Isn't this a couple decades too late? We should have been doing this crap a long time ago. Hurry up already!
- liljay2k, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but when?
- charlietuna, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1How will the soon-to-be-bankrupt US pay for this? Charge it to Visa?
- webkami, on 08/01/2008, -2/+3Thank you! Two of my friends will now live on moon.
Now please no more....two of my friends.... - nihility, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1I assume the astronauts would vigorously work out like they do in the space station. Most astronauts end up coming back in better shape since they're constantly running on the treadmill.
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1her is another good topic in German:
http://www.misterinfo.de/publish/technik-und-elekt ... - inactive, on 08/01/2008, -1/+1Alaska can come too!
- cyber49, on 07/31/2008, -6/+6Now that IS cool - our kids are so lucky...
- donjuan571, on 08/01/2008, -1/+1Its in every ***** thread you stupid.
- chkdg8, on 08/01/2008, -4/+3I wonder if this news has anything to do with the fact that Gary McKinnon lost his appeal to the House of Lords and is now facing deportation to the US. NASA can finally control their secrets.
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -3/+1People living on the moon? Sheed Sheed, Fiah Zeh Mizzles!
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -3/+1LEAVE THE MOON ALONE!!!
- razorsedge555, on 08/01/2008, -5/+1No doubt they will overcome the perils of long term weightlessness by smoking hella ganja. 1st off planet TV special will be Snoop Dog and Woody Harrelson imbibing on BET network.
George W. can fly the shuttle there whilst snorting blow off the dashboard - after all, there is no war on drugs in space. - mojoe1185, on 08/01/2008, -6/+1I for one accept our earth overlords.
Bet you didn't see that coming! - hollyminkowski, on 07/31/2008, -10/+4Gotta have water and nuclear power..... get those up there and the rest is straightforward.
Solar is not usable because the panels would be in darkness often and the cost to lift batteries to the moon would be huge.
There was talk of ice deposits in craters...if one could be found it would certainly simplify a base on the moon. - mookrit, on 08/01/2008, -8/+1The US is already occupying Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, Germany, South Korea and has bases in 130 countries. Now they want to spread their tentacles to the moon and create a space arms race. More info at independent.org (search space arms race).
- Oddog, on 07/31/2008, -13/+0i think it's useless because space distances are too large and we can only live on a very small number of planets/moons
