- xerodustrial, on 01/01/2009, -9/+123I've never met anybody who works for NASA who likes this *****, and I live right here where the action is.
FIRE HIM NOW. - allocate, on 01/01/2009, -3/+110AwkwaAaaAaarrrd.
- tmyprod, on 01/02/2009, -9/+83If he is doing so poorly that his wife needs to beg for his job, do we really want this guy running NASA?
- Chompy, on 01/02/2009, -4/+62He's been actively obstructing Obama's transition team, particularly in their efforts to find out what's going on in the Agency. His position (essentially verbatim) is "you don't need to look under the hood, you should just trust me".
He needs to go. - d1ckinabox, on 01/01/2009, -13/+67With the whole failure of design of the new spacecrafts

Maybe change would be a good thing for NASA - oktob3r, on 01/02/2009, -7/+54if he sucks fire his ass...
and honestly... why should we care if some idiot gets the boot... what about the hard working man/woman who's losing his or her job, they certainly can't send a letter to the president and ask to not be fired. - pintomp3, on 01/02/2009, -11/+46griffin is an idiot:

- jobobshishkabob, on 01/02/2009, -8/+35So does it make you feel good to call him B. Hussein? Don't tell me "oh I'm just using his middle name... whats wrong with that?".... you know exactly what you are doing.
- Rikkochet, on 01/02/2009, -0/+22He gets extra digg points for replying to the first comment in the thread even though his comment had nothing to do with the parent comment.
Digg needs a bury option for that and have it unhook the reply and make it its own comment (down theeeeeeeere) if enough people flag it that way. I get tired of this attention whoring. - inactive, on 01/02/2009, -10/+31I want NASA to succeed in finding intelligent life out there in this universe, so I can have interracial babies with hot sexy cat girls. I'd love to make them pur for me and moan meow as we do it.
- sonnybobiche, on 01/02/2009, -12/+32In 2004 testimony to Congress on the future of human spaceflight, he stated, "for me the single overarching goal of human space flight is the human settlement of the solar system, and eventually beyond. I can think of no lesser purpose sufficient to justify the difficulty of the enterprise, and no greater purpose is possible." In his testimony he also advocated heavy-lift launch capabilities, development of space qualified nuclear power systems, in situ resource utilization, and cost-effective medium-size transport to low Earth orbit.
This guy is awesome and the reason people don't like him is because they're the people who have caused nasa to stagnate over the past decades. - EdgarVerona, on 01/02/2009, -2/+21He sounds like a douche to me. Why on earth should this guy keep his job? I think it's worth looking at his record here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_D._Griffin#Cr ...
It sounds like his priorities are all out of whack, and he's obviously more than willing to toe the party line for the Republicans too. Republican fundamentalism is not what we need in NASA. - Rocketgeek, on 01/02/2009, -2/+20Design may be finalized. Some cutting of metal is in progress. But that doesn't mean the Ares I design isn't a failure.
Any rocket engineer who knows their c* from their Isp can see that it is a very poor design, from using a single SRB for the first stage (with its inherent harsh vibration environment), through to the fact that it needs the Orion Space Capsule's service module to fire is own main engine to get it into orbit, and the fact that it has the stability of a wet noodle. It's embarrassing, it's a joke, and it seems to be mainly supported by those who are in the pay of ATK.
Griffin chose vehicle designs and fitted the architecture to them, rather than the other way around. As a result, he has saddled NASA with a sub-standard system. He may have several degrees, but his ego seems to blind him to choosing the most effective sustainable space architecture.
At the International Astronautical Congress back in September, many were muttering about it in the bars, the coffee shops, and between conference sessions. When they were off the record, I did not hear anyone who was supportive of Griffin's plan, and I spoke to numerous NASA employees.
The consensus seems to be that either the option of using EELVs or developing the Direct 2.0 launch system, are far, far better solutions, and also provide a more logical path for developments such as in orbit propellant depots etc. - dawaza, on 01/02/2009, -12/+28We need change.
- twiztidsinz, on 01/02/2009, -4/+20100% bitching ***** ratio == buried.
- iizh, on 01/02/2009, -0/+14WTF
- Pake, on 01/02/2009, -3/+17Either or it doesn't matter. Even if it's just a personality issue, he could be preventing teamwork by creating a hostile environment.
- BradOFarrell, on 01/02/2009, -8/+21So, he was appointed by Bush and then told to redirect money from science and reach and into increasing the amount of space flights. And apparently he doesn't believe the actions of humans affect climate change.
I wonder why she thinks he's going to be fired, lol. - brucealmighty, on 01/02/2009, -4/+16When you accept a ride on the political gravy train the rules are clear.....your job is assumed to end whenever the administration ends. When the ride is over it's time to Man-up, walk away and just be grateful you got a ride at all.
- bravo1995, on 01/02/2009, -2/+14What's your definition of a "crazy" paycheck? I think people at his level are capped at $168,000/year.
Someone with his credentials could make considerably more in the private sector. - donsnyc, on 01/02/2009, -21/+33Griffin on global warmin, quote:
"I have no doubt that a trend of global warming exists, I am not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with."
"First of all, I don't think it's within the power of human beings to assure that the climate does not change, as millions of years of history have shown, and second of all, I guess I would ask which human beings - where and when - are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that this particular climate that we have right here today, right now is the best climate for all other human beings. I think that's a rather arrogant position for people to take."
I say Obama should fire him. - pintomp3, on 01/02/2009, -4/+16He (not a climatologist) is spouting ideological talking points from the administration that appointed him. Being a scientist alone does not add weight to his argument. There doctors who deny the link between AIDS and HIV, doesn't make it true or even a debatable issue.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIDS_denialism
Global warming deniers, AIDS denialists, and evolution deniers all use the same phony appeals to authority. - sonnybobiche, on 01/02/2009, -1/+12That's because the return to the moon project is one of Bush's babies and they want to kill it. Griffin believes in the project, and he wants to keep it going.
- bravo1995, on 01/02/2009, -3/+13I don't think she works for NASA.
- draculthemad, on 01/02/2009, -1/+11Unlikely. There has been absolutely 0 progress on that that I've heard of. Theres been no additional funding or anything.
Sounds more like hes desperately trying to fend off an audit. - spaceman84, on 01/02/2009, -2/+12Griffin is bureaucratic scum. Give him the boot. And ditch his cronies too. They are the reason why NASA is so damn inefficient and ineffective.
- sonnybobiche, on 01/02/2009, -2/+11What failure? Design for Ares I is finalized.
- KingGorilla, on 01/02/2009, -2/+11This guy sounds totally legit and I would so give it a try but I'm already insanely rich because of my rich uncle who emailed me from Nigeria
- Rocketgeek, on 01/02/2009, -1/+10He screwed it up by choosing designs of rockets that did not provide the most effective solution for return to the moon. In fact, you would have to try hard to come up with worse solutions. Ares I especially is less safe, and more expensive than the alternatives.
Rather than kill Constellation, it would be more likely that one of the more sensible alternatives would be chosen, namely either one of the existing EELVs (Atlas 5 or Delta IV Heavy), or the Direct concept, that is indicating that it is safer than Ares I, and a lot more capable in terms of launch capability. - scamper22, on 01/02/2009, -6/+15Sounds reasonable to me. Even if human activity is causing excessive global warming... his point is still valid.
Can we even control the problem?
While there are consequences to global warming (flooding...), the actual climate change itself is rather neutral. I wouldn't mind it a few degrees warmer. Just build some levies and move people away from the coasts. - bravo1995, on 01/02/2009, -0/+9He's a (pseudo) political appointment during an administration change. People's jobs are always in jeopardy under those circumstances.
That and the Obama space transition team may have very different ideas on the direction NASA should take. - inactive, on 01/02/2009, -2/+11He should be fired.... Out of a cannon..... And into the Sun.
- bravo1995, on 01/02/2009, -9/+18I work for NASA and have met many people who like him.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -3/+11of course you don't ...Rebecca
- ShadowofAres, on 01/02/2009, -5/+13Does he not do his job properly or is this just a personality issue?
- k3rfuffl3, on 01/02/2009, -0/+8As someone who's looking for a job at the moment it seems that people are asking fewer and fewer technical questions. It's as though US culture has turned into a search for buddies rather than people who know what the hell they're doing.
- StuTheMeatMan, on 01/02/2009, -6/+13His wife works in marketing - this is just a marketing technique. I really doubt that Mike didn't know about this email.
He is a tool, and Obama shouldn't award this guy with a job just because he's bitching. - OnSolThree, on 01/02/2009, -2/+9He also totally ***** up the Constellation program, which was the chief reason he was picked for the position in the first place. There are plenty of _competent_ people out there who also recognize the importance of human space flight and exploration. Griffin is not one of them and so he needs to go, whether or not you or his wife think otherwise.
- Sogui, on 01/02/2009, -0/+7Private spacecraft got into lower orbit! huzzah!
NASA got us onto the moon, a giant telescope in space that reaches into the depths of our galaxy, an International Space Station, a handful of rovers on mars, deep space exploration probes....
Yea no innovation here, imagine without the government we'd be celebrating our first man in space in the 2000s, I can't wait for the private sector to get us onto the moon or do serious research in the next century or two!
The whole idea is the private sector follows the profit, as this baby stage in space exploration there is no real profit in sending out deep space probes, telescopes into orbit, rovers to mars, men to the moon, scientists into space, etc..
So yea if you want to set back the space exploration age 100 years disband NASA and let's rely on the private sector to get things done. - NyteStarNyne, on 01/02/2009, -4/+11I work for NASA too! I'm a spaceman and I work on planets....in space....in my go-cart.
- AmazingSteve, on 01/02/2009, -3/+10If he needs his wife to beg for his job, then it's time to go. I never liked this guy, he always came off as a ***** to me.
- Epitaph, on 01/02/2009, -1/+8@Rikkochet: you guys should be in every major article
@alexj306: you are a racist, good sir. congratulations. I know you well. Perhaps you and my grandfather can sit down and talk about how Obama is a "terrist" and how he's secretly "Mislim" (because it would ***** matter if he were, right?)... you're both ignorant (feel free to look that word up; I realize you might well be from the midwest and have no clue of the actual definition). - nikayla, on 01/02/2009, -2/+9I hope we get someone that will upgrade our 400 MB email boxes to a size suitable for the 21st century. Also, that he fires whomever is in charge of IT, who is forcing everyone to use Windows.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 01/02/2009, -8/+15popular ratio has nothing to do with being a power digger, even though clearly this person is a power digger just by looking at his other digg stats.
- Chairboy, on 01/02/2009, -0/+6president@whitehouse.gov
They can send the letter.
Of course, there's no guarantee he'll read it. Or that he has influence on the boss of the person in question.... but they can send it. - Sogui, on 01/02/2009, -2/+8Rocketgeek or not, it's a bit presumptuous to blast a career NASA engineer for a failure when the thing hasn't even left the ground yet.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -5/+11Griffin's a tard.
- idontlikeyou2, on 01/02/2009, -11/+17Griffin is just a legacy of Bush administration. Time to let him go and find someone better.
His track record on climate research seems questionable and NASA engineer has complained about the work culture and innovation from bottom up. -
