- techmoney, on 01/13/2008, -2/+23Solarmax around 2012? Good to see that it is set to coincide with the self-fulfilling apocalypse prophecy based on the alignment with the galactic center.
- allywilson, on 01/13/2008, -0/+10Wasn't it an ESA satellite that discovered this?
- techlyc, on 01/13/2008, -1/+8I for one welcome our new Mayan overlords.
- moocow1452, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Oh Polarity-Reversal, what can't you do?

- Amplix, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3reversed polarity??
the Enterprise must be behind this - h3lx, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2That whole bit on Gamma Rays is pretty good too...
- grobinson, on 01/13/2008, -1/+3SolarMax 2011! Who hoo!
Get your extra high PH Sunscreen for 2011! - Filter, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2The solar calm that we have been experiencing only happens briefly every ten years. Satellites are designed to hold up under strong solar storms so while I'm not an expert I can't imagine that it would be anything to be worried about.
As an amateur radio enthusiast I'm actually excited about the fact that solar activity is expected to pick up. It means I'll probably be talking world wide with ease in a month or two. - 3leggedHorse, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2 I would not wanna be on a moon mission 2011/2012
- foU2Digg, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2This is good news for amateur radio operators! Radio waves propagate much better with increased Sunspot activity. Check out this web site for more information http://www.helloradio.org/
- jhourcle, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2SOHO is a joint NASA-ESA mission. On their website (http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov), the official statement (in the footer) is :
SOHO is a project of international cooperation between ESA and NASA
Why Marshall issued the press release, when SOHO is managed at Goddard, I have no clue. (STEREO is also based out of Goddard, as will be SDO ... Hinode, a NASA-JAXA mission goes through Marshall, but was only mentioned in passing in the press release)
Disclaimer : I'm on a NASA contract at Goddard, attached to the STEREO and Solar Data Analysis Center projects. - mstrebe, on 01/13/2008, -1/+3Yeah, it happens every 11 years, just like the end of the world.
- Synova, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2You do realize that the Mayan calendar is based off the solar and lunar cycles right?
- BobSutan, on 01/13/2008, -1/+3This isn't good. If a CME of significant energy strikes the Earth after our magnetosphere is teardropped enough we could lose an entire Hemisphere's worth of electronics and power stations. Imagine the entire hemisphere getting the Jericho treatment similar to after the EMP! Come to think of it there was a show on I think Discovery about a year or so ago that touched on this very subject. IIRC if we did lose our power stations it could be years until we have power back in major cities and even longer for suburban areas. Folks out in the boonies would be even longer without power. And this is all because of how long it takes to build the large transformers power stations use. If anyone happens to know the show I'm referring to, please post it's title. Kthxbye.
- mstrebe, on 01/13/2008, -2/+3"Global Warming Denier"--ROFL. Wow, I hadn't realized this has hit the full on religion stage. The earth is warming, nobody denies that. Why is the question, and whether we can do something about it is the even bigger question. 91M years ago, the earth was 22F warmer than it is now. The Earth will survive just fine. It's just us and the polar bears that are *****.
- h3lx, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1The cool thing about Sol is it could kill us in 8 minutes and there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it. Not just cook a few satellites but outright incinerate all life on this planet in a single CME. If our sun won't do it, there are literally hundreds of millions of others more than happy to oblige. It's really a marvel we've lasted as long as we have.
- vikingcoder, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1"Denier" is a descriptive term, not a pejorative. A person who denies something on no basis other than belief is a denier.
You are the one bringing up the Holocaust. That has to fall under some corollary of Godwin's Law. - ryan83189, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Turns UPS on... whew!
- Rhodamine, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1"You realize using the 'denier' label equates the silliness of the man made global warming 'theory', the the all to real tragedy and suffering of the holocaust?"
So the word 'denier' is now reserved only for descriptions of the Holocaust? Ridiculous. Absolutely Ridiculous. There are many different deniers out there already. Moon landing deniers, UFO deniers, (insert topic here) deniers....etc. - 0crabby0, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Actually, NASA has recently found a way to block a lot of gamma ray and particle radiation by uses layers of polypropylene(like in bags).

- BobSutan, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1THANKS!
- mhanley, on 01/13/2008, -1/+1(Insert obscure Doctor Who reference here)
- vikingcoder, on 01/13/2008, -1/+1Hooray for nihilism!
It is amusing to watch deniers use science to support their beliefs, and then decry it as religion when their beliefs are contradicted by science.
note: "Denier" is a descriptive term, not a pejorative. A person who denies something on no basis other than belief is a denier. - captoftheworld, on 01/13/2008, -1/+1Were all guna DIE!!!! (/sarcasm)
- Rhodamine, on 01/13/2008, -5/+3It's the many in the Global Warming denier crowd that are trying to explain climate change with this sort of phenomena.
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -4/+2yea and jesus, is going to fly out of the puffy white clouds to take all you true believers away from the rest of us... I say thank god that he finally listen to my payer of get rid of all his followers, they are super annoying.
- killcops, on 01/13/2008, -4/+1oh snap dude, cosmogenesis 2012
- CLYF, on 01/13/2008, -9/+5Looks like the sun is going to have some PMS... I mean PCS (Pre-Solar Cycle). Ahem.
- lordmarcus, on 01/13/2008, -5/+1You realize using the 'denier' label equates the silliness of the man made global warming 'theory', the the all to real tragedy and suffering of the holocaust? How about you show some respect to those that lived and died as a result of the holocaust and not use such comparisons. to continue to do so only belittles their memories.
- KennMac, on 01/13/2008, -8/+4some politician somewhere will find a way to associate global warming with this and make some money.
- facewarts, on 01/13/2008, -10/+5Do you think I'm a dumb schmuck ? Everyone knows solar spots are caused by C02 emissions from SUVs in the USA. This in turn causes global warming.
GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!
