- jayhawk88, on 08/22/2008, -1/+13If only there was some kind of article you could read that would give you more information on this topic.
- iharbinger, on 08/22/2008, -1/+10cause a white hole spews out matter and light, theoretically.
- strictnein, on 08/22/2008, -0/+7California will soon rule it a term not acceptable for government bids and work, like they did with Master and Slave drives.
- strictnein, on 08/22/2008, -0/+6Actually, in this case, black is the absence of color.
- clemsontigers, on 08/22/2008, -8/+13BLACK HOLE? THAT'S RACIST. WHY ISN'T IT CALLED A WHITE HOLE???
/sarcasm - vinceislegend, on 08/22/2008, -1/+6I thought it said "huge cosmic breasts" and I don't wanna take back my Digg.
- strictnein, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5No, that's not what they're saying at all. There are large ones and small ones. There aren't ones in the middle. Not sure how that could "hurt your brain".
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4The 30 second answer... Galactic super massive black holes where formed by whatever formed the galaxies at the beginning of the universe, and are as old as the observable universe. Every galaxy has them.
Stellar black holes are formed when massive stars go supernova.
Because black holes are so small and have such incredibly high gravity, they tend to fling matter away rather than suck it in.
Medium size black holes have been observed, but statistically they they are oddities... Because they are so incredibly rare, we can conclude that super massive black holes are big bang relics rather than having been formed by accretion. - lukeduke, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3I saw a movie once where a black hole came. I didn't think to measure it though.
- leszek, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Nope, see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawking_radiation - pires64, on 08/22/2008, -1/+4Of course the white man gets the good hole
*shakes fist* - TheKingInYellow, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3http://digg.com/people/Dallas_has_a_black_hole
- justice7, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3i think i forgot ***** ... *facepalm*
- wilhoitm, on 08/22/2008, -2/+4CERN just created a medium sized black hole with the Large Hadron Collider and it is at the center of the Earth waiting to destroy us in 2012 as the Mayan prophecy had predicted. Unless aliens show us just in time to save us!
- MacEnvy, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3Yup:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_hole - LordPhilMil, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Of course...I'm sure its also known to the State of California to cause cancer too...
- h3lx, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2There are no bad holes.
/wait..wut? - LiberalKid, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Except not many respected scientists these days believe white holes exist..
- duckyinc, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1They would start from small and om nom nom nom nom nom them selves into big
- TSK05, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1This article does not explain clearly enough that we think there are intermediate blackholes (the "official" term for medium black holes), just maybe not at centers of globular [all] clusters but perhaps at centers of dwarf galaxies - for instance Omega Centauri: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_Centauri
- pramodc84, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2black holes sucks :P
- LordPhilMil, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1True, but "size" of a black hole means its gravitational strength, which would mean a larger area that it can suck in things from. So a small black hole can get you from say, 5 feet while a large one can get you from 100 feet. and by get I mean suck you in with no chance of escape!
They say most because it is still possible that there are other sizes, like medium, but are rare (you know, medium-rare...that was bad). - justice7, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2nothingholes?
darkholes?
lightlessholes?
stinkholes?
okay the last one was a joke. - dafragsta, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2Except the article doesn't exactly go into that kind of detail. It's all about the pursuit of the "medium" black hole. This also contradicts the notion that if the LHC made black holes; that they'd be microscopic and close back up almost instantly. While the loophole might be that only small and large black holes can be sustained, it doesn't address how they can conclusively say for sure that there are definitely only two sizes of black hole.
The article itself says a lot without ever actually saying anything.
"Is this the end of the story for medium black holes? Zepf said it is possible such objects are hiding in the outskirts of galaxies like our Milky Way, either in surrounding so-called dwarf galaxies or in the remnants of dwarf galaxies being swallowed by a bigger galaxy. If so, the black holes would be faint and difficult to find." - LordPhilMil, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Technically yes...if there was a massive enough one. But gravity is a very weak force. So you would need a ginormous one...
- LordPhilMil, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I don't know, this example seems to disprove that Hawking radiation would answer his question no
"A black hole of one solar mass has a temperature of only 60 nanokelvin; in fact, such a black hole would absorb far more cosmic microwave background radiation than it emits. A black hole of 4.5 × 1022 kg (about the mass of the Moon) would be in equilibrium at 2.7 kelvins, absorbing as much radiation as it emits. Yet smaller primordial black holes would emit more than they absorb, and thereby lose mass."
Saying that the bigger, the colder and the more it sucks in while it shoots out less. Wouldn't that mean that it would be possible? or did I not read enough of it? - jj101, on 08/22/2008, -2/+3Oh ***** off with your politically correct ***** already. They're caled black holes becuase they're ***** black. That is not racist. Black is a colour not a prejudice. Only oversensitive whiners, with nothing better to do than get offended on someone elses behalf, get upset by this.
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2One small quibble...
Black holes do not suck. - Curufir, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Well hell, it's something for CERN to shoot for.
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1"Most" and "might"...vagueness FTL.
- whisperedlie, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1dugg down because starbucks jargon makes my brain nearly explode from stupidity overload.
- jimmypoops, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I guess for the small ones to progress to being big ones there has to be some middle ground where its growing...
- LordPhilMil, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Well, metaphorically they do. I should of used "Pull in" I suppose but that doesen't answer my concern...
- redrumred, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1ditto
- web2pointYo, on 08/22/2008, -2/+3What about Grande or Vente.
- itsripitsrip, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1all black holes reach a singularity, but they're not all the same size.
it's like comparing different types of cars. all cars can all stand still, it's just some have far more power than others. - inactive, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1I have a theory;
Lets say all the matter in the universe was originally in a black hole, i.e. gravitational singularity. We theorize that gravity is produced by a theoretical particle called a graviton which may only exist in one very tiny dimension. Suppose that something briefly caused gravity to become weaker or to lose all its effect for just an instant, and all the matter in the original black hole all came spilling out at the same time, would that not be a very similar circumstance to the big bang? Let me put it another way, lets say the natural state of matter is for it to exist in large clumps, very very large black holes, and they just sit there doing nothing for nearly infinite amounts of time. The chances of gravity failing for a split second and letting all that matter out is extremely small, but again if you have an infinite amount of time then something that is very rare becomes more and more likely to happen over a long period of time. Then it happens, gravity does fail for an instant, maybe in a localized region, then comes back on again but not before 'bursting' one of these 'matter bubbles'...
Anyone? - wilhoitm, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1You drink too much Starbucks! I am addicted too!
- SmokeTetsu, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1They only come in small or large? But I ordered a medium! I told them... NO I don't want a large black hole for a quarter more!
- lnxfi, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1That's what she said.
- ScrawnyChef, on 08/22/2008, -0/+0And while your at it, seal off any source of air. stay in there even if it's getting hard to breathe. Fight the urge to open the door for more oxygen.
- handheldchimp, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1There are exactly two sizes that they can be...small black hole, or large black hole. Anything else is a rare phenomena that will never be understood...
- ScrawnyChef, on 08/22/2008, -0/+0I tried to measure a black hole, but my ruler got sucked in. Oh bother.
- wedges, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1two questions. first, aren't all black holes the same size? a singularity? second, if MOST black holes come in only small and large, doesn't that mean SOME black holes can be other sizes?
- cheezintern, on 08/22/2008, -2/+2do they come with fries?
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -2/+2That's what she said?
- LordPhilMil, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1I believe sinkhole would have been fine.
again, using that insane story about black hole being a raciest term... - Scrappy1850, on 08/22/2008, -2/+2which category does starr jones fit into?
- Kenzan, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1But do they come in Taupe?
- gametavern, on 08/22/2008, -3/+2Maybe the small is the entrance, and the big is the exit? (or the other way around)..... worm holes...
