- greenroom628, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6i remember the tom hanks mini-series, "from earth to the moon" where they did a single episode dedicated to the design, engineering, and, build of the lunar module from northrop. it's easily my favorite episode as an engineer.
- jonnyboy88, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4It was Grumman who built it actually, they merged with Northrup in 1994.
- anthropodeus, on 07/17/2009, -0/+31. circles hold no volume
2. the moon has gravity and is not 0g
3. it is air resistance, not gravity, that would determine the optimum shape of the landing vessel anyway
4. good luck getting a cube out of earth's atmosphere. - Cougarcat, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2If anybody is interested in this, I recommend reading Thomas Kelly's book, "Moon Lander." He was the chief engineer for the Lunar Module, and the book is a fascinating read.
- TexMexRex, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Imagine if these guys had designed the space shuttle. Then it wouldn't suck so much.
- Pitak89, on 07/17/2009, -1/+3Those are some of the most adorable little space vehicles I've ever seen.
- mercano, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Seconded. "Spider" is one of my favorite episodes of "From the Earth to the Moon," along with "Al Bean Goes to the Moon," or whatever that episode is called.
- TheCynic, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2Excellent Pictures. Even today looking at the moon in the sky it seems a dream to actually travel there.

I wish this was /s - NiftyG, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0Grumman actually was in the running to build the shuttle, but lost to Rockwell.
- andysmall, on 07/22/2009, -0/+0Loved "Spider" as well. Very interesting look into design process of spacecrafts
