- rootlake, on 11/06/2009, -0/+19Tom does some incredible work that inspires my own timelapse efforts. The great thing is that he's very accessible and is willing to talk about this stuff to anyone. If you follow him in his site's forums, he verbalizes his own process of discovering how to take these incredible shots:

- BeShirtHappy, on 11/06/2009, -0/+13AWEsome!
- yn0t, on 11/06/2009, -0/+13Those are not shooting stars. They are satellites. In order for the low light capture he needed to do longer shutter speeds, as the shutter is open, the satellite moves across the field of view. The fact that the streaks last longer than one frame means that the object was there longer than a split second.
Amazing video! - Czechxican, on 11/06/2009, -0/+13This video really made me take notice of the fact that we are just floating along in an incredible vastness to which most of us are completely unaware.
- MetalLizard, on 11/06/2009, -0/+11When society has got you down. Look to the heavens above, and to nature. Dugg.
- robbob, on 11/05/2009, -2/+12made me appreciate this good earth like an American Indian
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+9I wish I would see the milky way in my area but light pollution blocks out almost everything. ***** you, ***** neighbors with irresponsible lighting plants and small stores that have upward facing spotlights.
- PowderedToasty, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8If you liked that I'd like to recommend the movie Baraka http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103767/ It will change the way you think about the world. (I think that music might have even been taken from the movie).
- pathouston22, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8Get in the car and drive to where there is no light pollution.
- uptwolait, on 11/06/2009, -1/+8Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown
And things seem hard or tough
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft
And you feel that you've had quite eno-o-o-o-o-ough
Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power
The sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the Milky Way
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars
It's a hundred thousand light-years side to side
It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light-years thick
But out by us it's just three thousand light-years wide
We're thirty thousand light-years from Galactic Central Point
We go 'round every two hundred million years
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe
The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whiz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know
Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed thereis
So remember when you're feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth - WhoDoneIt, on 11/06/2009, -1/+8Am I the only one thinkin what the ***** are you doing listening to Conga? :P
- KennedyWally, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8Speechless.
- footbag01, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Amazing as always. The first scene with the time-lapse in motion is unbelievable.
- fingerrockets4, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Nice to be reminded that we are all ridding on Spaceship Earth

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_R-FZsysQNw - thekronz, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5That was the most incredible piece of art. Brilliant.
- Czechxican, on 11/06/2009, -2/+7The stars in the sky are light years away and the only reason we perceive them as changing position is due to earth's rotation. Hence, the speed that the we see stars move is equal to the speed of Earth's rotation. The shooting stars you are seeing are objects within the earth's atmosphere and are actually moving. Hence they appear to be streaking along much faster when compared with stationary stars.
- n1eb, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5That is a talented guy.
- SierraEcho, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5The shooting stars may also be aircraft.
- tomservo51, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Cool because those trees in the white mountains are the old living things on earth!
- r1ptide64, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5I think you misunderstood my question. When I look up at the sky, I don't perceive the stars as moving, because they are "moving" far too slowly (as in, their position in the sky is changing too slowly). On the other hand, I perceive shooting stars as moving very vast (as in, their position in the sky is changing quickly). This video was sped up enough to make the normally stationary-seeming stars move, but the observed speed of the shooting stars seems not to have changed.
- tushyd, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Someone was influenced by Baraka (which was in-turn influenced by Koyaanisquatsi)
- runner1, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4No it is not. Go out to the high desert Cedar mesa Utah or Chaco canyon New Mexico set up a tent and go to sleep on a moonless night. Set your alarm clock for 1:00am and then getup without tuning on any light even the one on your watch and go out and look at the sky. You will be stunned! I was! it was breathtaking, The milky way is a clear and as bright as the pictures you see here.
- jrohdedds, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Unbelievable.
Check out the rest of his stuff... - dizavin, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4PLEASE, tell me this guy has these as HD Video downloads somewhere.
- OverDriven, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4The "shooting stars" were not shooting stars at all...they are aircraft high in the atmosphere.
- notaku, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4I know what you mean, I thought the same thing.
I assume he's using a high ISO to take the pictures, and to prevent star trails the exposure shouldn't be over 29 seconds. Maybe some post production merging? - gerryk, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Fantastic, although I'm pretty sure those 'shooting stars' are aircraft.
- YourNameHere1, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3I had to post one last comment.
Download the 1080p version if you haven't. I just watched it and it was so much better than the flash player video. (36 MB with some pixelation)
If you haven't seen this clip as the full 247 MB Quicktime video, then you haven't seen how beautiful this video really is (no pixelation when full screen). It was worth waiting a day for, and the few minutes it took to download it. - DirtDiver223, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3I could stare at that video all day.
- darthvalium, on 11/06/2009, -2/+5satellites.
- iborobotosis23, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I haven't seen Baraka but something I would assume that's similar is the Qatsi trilogy by Godfrey Reggio with music from Philip Glass. Here's the first 10 minutes of the movie:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4MXPIpj5sA&fea ... - Kyan, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Easy to download off Safari. Open activity and find the huge file - it's an mpg4. Then when it opens in a new window, copy the url. Go to your favourite forum where you can post something, start a new topic and paste in the url. Then hit preview topic (unless you want everyone to read it- up to you). Then in preview mode right click the url to save as...
On the timescapes website, there are two right off the bat that are flv files. Even easier as they auto dl.
HTH. - Windadct, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Ummm...never thought I would say BRAVO - and mean it!
- iborobotosis23, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I was under the impression that it's hard or impossible to see stuff like the Milky Way with the naked eye. It can be seen in pictures and videos due to long exposure time, right?
- raydeen, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2It came on .977 The 80's channel on Shoutcast.
- Kyan, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2@runner1 - amen, brother. The sky is gorgeous. It's a real shame that so many people are unaware of its natural beauty. Can you imagine what it must have been like to see that kind of sky every night 200 years ago on the prairie, in the mountains or the desert?
- Confuseus, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2you're right, this is totally inspired by Baraka (dare I say even a ripoff?) even though it is quite wonderful. Even the music was taken from Baraka.
- Someb0dy, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Mind = Blown.
- jshhmr, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Baraka is my favorite film. It changed the way I see the world.
- YourNameHere1, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I just joined vimeo to download this video. I tried to download from the link and got this:
This video cannot be downloaded anymore today.
..... so maybe on another day when this articles not on digg. - r1ptide64, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3Hold on, if the video is sped up enough that we observe the stars and milky way move as the earth rotates, why are the shooting stars roughly in real-time?
- ChrisInTheDark, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1It's not daylight: If you watch any of his 'behind the scenes' videos, he states that it's the moon illuminating some of the images.
- alfredkcp, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Anyway I can download the 1920x1080, 247.2MB version? The daily download limit of this vimeo video has been reached.
- YourNameHere1, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Hopefully this will help someone that uses Safari. I myself use Linux with Firefox, so I just bookmarked the page and will check it tomorrow to download the 1080 High Def version..... I'm glad I joined the site, it seems to have a bunch of cool HD videos, and since I just built a multi-threaded version of mplayer I'm looking forward to downloading some of those.
- diggnthat, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Plus... these are long exposures.
- YourNameHere1, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1I guess I should of said that the link that I was trying to download was this one at the lower right hand corner:
"Full 1080p direct download link is available from Vimeo in the lower-right-hand corner of this page, if you are logged in to Vimeo."
I thought that it might be a better quality video than the flash file in my /tmp directory (which I did save, and even thought it looks very nice there were still a few pixelated parts)
But I still appreciate the help, some people don't know how to save flash movies, and giving people help is a cool thing to do in my opinion. With Linux, I can usually just grab the flash video from my /tmp file, and if it's not showing in there, then there are other ways to use a firefox add-on or to use a certain terminal command in Linux.
I just read that part about it being in 1080p and thought to myself that it might look really nice on my multi-threaded mplayer. -
