- wickedlogic, on 05/14/2008, -29/+88*cough* http://www.google.com/sky/
- KaiserArny, on 05/14/2008, -28/+73Another "Me Too" By Microsoft
- redlantern64, on 05/14/2008, -2/+31Rather than digging the article about the site, why not just digg the site? http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/
- reekon, on 05/14/2008, -2/+25Why should they make it for any other system?
How much software does Apple make for Windows other than iTunes to sell it's players? - ToeKneeDee, on 05/14/2008, -1/+21I think people forget that Google didn't even develop "Google Earth", they bought the program & technology from Keyhole, Inc. back in 2004. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyhole%2C_Inc.)
- slashbot, on 05/14/2008, -0/+20Where is YOUR salsa made?
New york city?! - Trixrox, on 05/14/2008, -9/+26It isn't nearly as good.
- Gillagad, on 05/14/2008, -0/+16Did anyone here actually try WorldWide Telescope before bashing it? WWT runs circles around Google Sky...
- nessus359, on 05/14/2008, -5/+21Agreed, there is no comparison. This is much better.
- uberphildo, on 05/14/2008, -0/+13This is Digg...
Didn't you read in the EULA where it says it's mandatory that every story must be linked through a minimum of two blogs before getting to the actual source? - kravex, on 05/14/2008, -5/+17If you don't want Microsoft in your life why complain?
- hadak, on 05/14/2008, -3/+14Pace? The final frontier? Well, it's damn good salsa, but I wouldn't exactly call it the final of anything...
- MasterPlayer, on 05/14/2008, -22/+39Has Microsoft ever had an original idea in the past 10 years?
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -13/+22Google already unveiled 'Google Earth' for space and called it...Google Sky.
- PolkinhajIsGod, on 05/14/2008, -5/+15I like how there was an article about this on the front page last night, and everyone loved it then, but as soon as "Google" came into the title of the article, everyone's suddenly a Microsoft hater. I suggest you actually try the program out, and maybe you'll see that it's better and more well-featured than Google sky. And anyway, what's the big deal about there being two programs that do similar things? All it does is improve the quality of both of them through competition.
- RubberBinder, on 05/14/2008, -6/+14I think you just contradicted yourself because first you say Microsoft had to have been working on this before Google released theirs, but at the end of your comment you say that Microsoft can write a "beautiful creative app" in a short amount of time. =/
- zadadka, on 05/14/2008, -0/+7You're new here then, huh?
- Amorn, on 05/14/2008, -2/+12Look at that moon!
That's no moon... - FutureGuy, on 05/14/2008, -5/+14Not sure who the me too is, try out the product first, if you are comparing it to Google's Sky you will be surprised.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6So is Mac, Linux, Unix, etc...
- Trixrox, on 05/14/2008, -1/+8FYI it isn't really a plugin, it is a standalone app.
- Sil3ncer7, on 05/14/2008, -3/+10Honestly I think it isn't the same as Google sky. As much as I hate to side with Macroshaft, WWT is more elaborate and more in detail than Google Sky... Microsoft might have this one app.. But Google is still more innovative.. and original
- Herolint, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6I'd love to give it a spin as soon as there's a link to download for Linux.
- nwoolls, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5So wait, Google did search first? And they didn't even create Google Sky/Earth, they bought it from another company. Good try though. Enjoy your bandwagon.
- IphtashuFitz, on 05/14/2008, -8/+16And no surprise it's Windows only. No support for linux, Macs, etc. For something meant mainly for research I consider this a huge gaffe, even for the likes of Microsoft. I work at a university and virtually everybody I know here who would be interested in something like this runs either linux or Mac OS X as their desktop. But then again it IS Microsoft we're talking about. I guess all my colleagues will just have to stick with Google Sky for the time being.
- Flamancot, on 05/14/2008, -10/+16buried, dupe from last night
- IphtashuFitz, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6I don't want to mention my university directly but its in the northeast US. Most of our research is done on linux since that's what runs on our HPC clusters, our visualization systems, etc. Some people do have Windows desktops but it's mostly non-technical people (administrative staff, etc). But since the vast majority of research tools run on linux the users prefer having their own linux or unix (or OS X) systems as well.
- JeremyTTU, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6Get a rope!
- nwoolls, on 05/14/2008, -1/+8Let's see, was Google search innovative? No, Yahoo did it first. Were their language tools innovative? No, Altavista did it first. Was Gmail innovative? No, Hotmail did it first. Was Google Sky/Earth innovative? No, they bought the technology from another company. Are their online office tools innovative? No, a dozen other companies did it first.
Is Microsoft innovative. Maybe not, but claiming Google is any better is just silly. - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6Can I get some chips with that?
- EntropyFan, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8And NASA WorldWind was around for a while as well.
But when it is Microsoft, it is a 'me too' product
Anyone else (well, weather it is Google buying something or Apple cutting and pasting BSD) it is 'innovative' and 'groundbreaking' - duckyinc, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5WWT is actually pretty good, since most of you are actually using windows download the file now!
- nessus359, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8Have you compared to them?
- natchiketa, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4do you understand that you're spamming?
- nessus359, on 05/14/2008, -2/+6How can it be original when all of this type of software has been around for a very long time? No Google didn't do it first. They just yell the loudest about what they do.
- kaffein, on 05/14/2008, -14/+19In ancientererer news from last year...
Google Unveils 'Google Sky' for Space oh wait...
http://www.google.com/sky/ - yournightmare, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Did Google say "hey look, we created a search engine like Yahoo's, but better," or how about "hey look, we bought GoogleEarth from some other company and slapped our name on it."
Did Linus Torvalds say "hey, I copied Unix but made it a little better," or did I miss that press conference? Does Apple say "look how great Mac OS is, we totally copied *nix OS's"?
This is as stupid as complaining that every time a car company comes out with a new car, they don't point out that they didn't invent automobiles.
Microsoft's press release comes no where near saying "this type of program was completely our idea and nothing has ever been done like it ever."
I notice that you didn't preface your comment with "hi, I'm cjohara and I'm going to jump on the anti-Microsoft bandwagon and complain needlessly about perceived injustices performed by Microsoft." Apparently in your world Microsoft is the only company or individual that has to point out something they made is similar to something else. - rsvguy, on 05/14/2008, -23/+32It's Windows only! Typical microsoft.
The less microsoft in my life the better... - byronm, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4wine
- jhourcle, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5Wouldn't this be 'TerraServer for Space' ? I mean, that one was at least made by Microsoft.
- Huangism, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4have u ever done research b4 posting? let me answer that NO u have not
- FutureGuy, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5Here's a laundry list of Google's and Apple's "Me Too".
Everything they have ever come up with.
Ohh and since this topic concerns Google's Sky/Earth, Google brought that software from someone else, look it up. - alwaysmc2, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4It's free to the 95% of the world, so please shut up.
- jessehadden, on 05/14/2008, -2/+6Am I the only who was shocked that a Microsoft site would be so beautiful?
- nessus359, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7And over 50 other software companies before Google put out this type of software...so I guess Google didn't have an original idea either.
Just because Google does it doesn't, A) make if good B) make it useful C) Make it unique.
Next I am sure people will be saying that Google invented email. - nessus359, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4Actually no it isn't. This is a very good tool for both educational purposes and community out reach projects. It does a great deal to get people interested in astronomy and space in general. If you don't like it or have no interest don't use it, it clearly wasn't targeted for you.
- yournamehere, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3I like the tour feature... it will be good for my kids
- Herolint, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5Java
