- stonedthot, on 03/04/2008, -1/+27Avalanche? That's what they want you to think, It's clearly a martian stealth army on the move, crafty little buggers that they are
- BadAstronomer, on 03/04/2008, -4/+28The title of the Digg page is misleading, it wasn't caught "on film". The camera used, HiRISE, is digital, of course, and only takes stills. I think it's pretty frakkin' cool anyway. :-)
- chumscrubber, on 03/04/2008, -0/+19I hope no Martians were hurt.
- borez, on 03/04/2008, -1/+19Minus the crap:

- cjohara, on 03/04/2008, -0/+7"Doesn't that mean that there is AIR there? If there were no air, the "dirt" (or whatever it is called on Mars) would just go 'plop'"
Great Scott! It's just stupid enough to to make perfect sense... This man should work for NASA or at least MASA. - Daniru, on 03/04/2008, -0/+6Clearly what we're witnessing is a Martian terrorist attack.
- pk7677, on 03/04/2008, -1/+7Transformers..... cough cough*
- borez, on 03/04/2008, -0/+5Looks like it knocked out the Martian server
- zeromancer, on 03/04/2008, -0/+4welp. time to take democracy interplanetary now. at least NASA will finally get some real funding.
- inactive, on 03/04/2008, -0/+4Oh man that is so cool. Direct link http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/images/2008/details/ ...
I can't believe we can now get these hi-def images of another planet, for the first time in history. We are seeing something that no one has ever seen before. Watching an avalanche on another planet is so incredible if you sit back and think about it. - oderdigg, on 03/04/2008, -0/+4ROFL...
MASA... - hansk, on 03/04/2008, -0/+3burried for using 'frakkin' cool. uggghh...
- inactive, on 03/04/2008, -0/+3You are looking at a hi-def image of a martian avalanche taken thousands of mies above its surface from a now-orbiting robotic space craft that your country built. We sent it about 66 million miles, and now it is networked with other orbiting spaceships around mars, and beaming back massive quantities of information. Thats what your looking at. No humans in history have seen this level of detail of Mars.
- DiggasWAttitude, on 03/04/2008, -2/+5Start the reactor. Free Mars...
- seandfeeney, on 03/04/2008, -0/+3direct video link http://video.ap.org/vws/search/aspx/ap.aspx?t=m326 ...
- inactive, on 03/04/2008, -0/+3Third time is NOT the charm in this case
- BadAstronomer, on 03/04/2008, -1/+4The "video" there is just a bunch of pans across still images. Not worth clicking.
- inactive, on 03/04/2008, -1/+3Sorry for trying to be a smart ass.. but shouldn't it be a landslide? The ice is made of CO2 and not crystallized water like on earth (assumption - based on the text) and the rest is dust and rocks.. Cool either way :)
- inactive, on 03/04/2008, -0/+2The north polar cap is predominantly water (H2O) ice, not CO2. Indeed the north polar cap has roughly the same volume of water ice as the Greenland Ice Cap. http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap981216.html CO2 sublimation may have something to do with the slide however. Coolest Mars picture I've seen in years.
- petebot, on 03/04/2008, -0/+2Get your ass to Mars.
I *really* need to stop commenting on comments already buried... - inactive, on 03/04/2008, -0/+2It's clear evidence of ManBearPig.
- whalt, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1How long before someone sees a face in this?
- borez, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1True but "Martian Avalanche Caught on hard drive" doesn't really have the same ring to it.
- gpit2286, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1Damn it, you beat me to it, ha ha
- 3rdDay, on 03/04/2008, -1/+2Wired has a video link in it's article:
http://news.wired.com/dynamic/stories/M/MARS_AVALA ... - StephenChow, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1Avalanche! Oh, Avalanche
- pseudononymist, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1er, which way is up?
- apolloae, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1OMG ROCKS.
- wolphcry, on 03/04/2008, -1/+2Wonder what the scale is? Just how big of area is the total photo and the crop?
Google mirror -
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:KX4fE1udi50J: ... - inactive, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1Wrong. Mars has a thin atmosphere made up of about 96% CO2, but only 1% the density of Earth's atmosphere. So if you could survive in the open you would be able to talk and hear things.
- Marrach, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1 Incredible. And I was just thinking about renting "Angry Red Planet" or "Robinson Crusoe on Mars". I'm sitting in my house and seeing the real thing from another world! It's weird and awesome at the same time.
So happens I can't even watch those movies anymore. I'm seeing the real thing and the movies are wholly incorrect and unwatchable now. Bummer. - borez, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1No...that's the fun bit
- zeromancer, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1'film' does not imply a moving picture. if you were alive before cameras were digital, you'd know they used film as well.
- LordByr0n, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Heres the one thats going around on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0
and man is it epic - TomPhoolery, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1My question is, why did the Avalanche move from Colorado to Mars? Did they get a bigger arena or something?
- morphinapg, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1wouldn't the speed of sound change due to the density being different, and wouldn't that distort the sound, so that you'd hear it, but it would sound a lot different than on earth?
- TheKoopaBros, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Stunning. Seriously what are the odds that something like this would happen and get captured beautifully by the satelite. Great.
- LordByr0n, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1lol at least we'd be doing something with space if we could take democracy everywhere
- BabySlapper, on 03/04/2008, -4/+4Martian global warming?!?! Quick, someone call Al Gore!
- digitronix, on 03/05/2008, -1/+1Oh no... global warming on Mars? Stop the martian emissions!!!
- korupture, on 03/04/2008, -6/+6so where's the video?
- InnerBlueAbyss, on 03/04/2008, -1/+1Who the ***** was yodeling? See the mess you made!
- LukeBK, on 03/04/2008, -2/+1It looks like a dust storm to me.
- noahw, on 03/04/2008, -3/+1Mirror of the image: http://echopic.com/fge/full
- McMaster88, on 03/04/2008, -3/+1indeed, a fail video.
- stevenhatfield, on 03/04/2008, -4/+1Ok, so the avalanche happens and is caught on camera. There are puffs of dust there... *puffs of dust*! Doesn't that mean that there is AIR there? If there were no air, the "dirt" (or whatever it is called on Mars) would just go "plop" and with very little fanfare relocate itself, right? What does that say about the Martian atmosphere?
- prozacgod, on 03/04/2008, -5/+2So if an avalanche happens on mars does it make a sound? .... (cue the " in space, nobody can hear you scream" references)
- xirtap, on 03/04/2008, -10/+6doooork
