Mars Lander 'Tweets' at Space Fans

abcnews.go.com — When the Phoenix Lander, NASA's spacecraft that is looking for signs of life -- or at least ice -- on Mars, landed two weeks ago it, had an audience of thousands, but it was all online, not on cable or the nightly TV newscast. Web-savvy space fans have tuned into the spacecraft's Twitter page, where Phoenix has been "tweeting" back daily messages..

She's actually not even at NASA, and she does a lot of the twittering from home. Also, did you seriously want NASA to blow the money on formulating a basic AI that would be able to compose tweets in the first-person based on what's going on, when they can just pay this chick five grand to do it on her own?

  • JQP123, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Down through the years, NASA has always been keenly aware of the significance and value of publicity and public relations. After all, continued funding and thus the organization's very survival depends on it.

    But simulated 'tweeting' from a spacecraft is a little over the top, don't you think? What's next? Teams of puppeteers visiting kindergartens across the country --- introducing kids to the importance of NASA? At some point, too much of this starts to look like blatant propoganda.
