- chanop, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7"Managing the close fly-bys was an operational challenge, made possible by spacecraft operations engineers and scientists who worked together to specially optimise Mars Express’s trajectory and obtain the best possible views."
Thanks Engineers! - nodream, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5It's not a NASA image, dude...
- mijelh, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4It's ESA, not NASA
- Frostek, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Well done to the ESA!
- thespiff, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3This sort of stuff never ceases to impress the hell out of me. If you click through to the animations of the orbits that made this happen, you can get a little bit of perspective of how precisely everything had to be executed to achieve the timing required for these photos. And from the location where this orbiter was controlled Mars is just a bright speck of light in space. Amazing really.

- fwedwic, on 07/31/2008, -2/+5what are you rambling on about??
- Niightwitch, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3I had assumed all moons basically have a spherical shape. It's interesting to learn that this isn't always true.
- phixson, on 07/31/2008, -3/+5I'm not at all sure that's Phobos. I looked very carefully and couldn't find the Leather Goddess anywhere.
- DontGiveADamn, on 07/31/2008, -0/+2When you are big enough gravity will make you round.

- Icetype, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1Quake 3 Joke?
- rabidbob, on 07/31/2008, -1/+1Because 2D sprites on a 2.5D map is so 90ies.
- senkmajer, on 07/31/2008, -2/+1The grooves are from the ropes being thrown around it to haul it into position
- buchopolis, on 07/31/2008, -3/+1Thats not Phobos!!!
I don't see the Cyberdaemon anywhere... - yairagat, on 07/31/2008, -3/+1from AMNH: "The planet is pulling Phobos inward at a rate of 1.8 centimeters (0.7 inch) per year, and that rate is gradually increasing. If nothing can be done to reverse this—and clearly nothing can—in about 40 million years Phobos will either crash into Mars or be torn into pieces that would continue to orbit as a ring of debris"
so i guess Phobos is DOOMED. (Pun INTENDED) - yairagat, on 07/31/2008, -3/+1No matter in what context Phobos would be mentioned, it will always sound like the "PHOBOS!" character name in Q3A, said by the announcer. Always.
- GrubFisher, on 07/31/2008, -2/+0If you look close, you can see little brown imps snorling around with the spikey feets and the fireballs
- dwright99, on 07/31/2008, -3/+1That's no moon, Chewy get us out of here!
- louiebaur, on 07/30/2008, -4/+1Yup that would probably be the correct answer
- Pococurante, on 07/31/2008, -4/+0> The observation made use of a spacecraft slew, a special manoeuvre

- spyd3rweb, on 07/31/2008, -9/+2Nasa must really have something against COLOR photos.
- Exquisite2, on 07/30/2008, -15/+7Phobos is what scientist call a "small irregular body" could be remnant of the material that formed the planets. Who formed the planets? God does not go pouf and voila planets. He organizes materials to form planets. Of course the material obey the sound of His voice. He doesn't manually form planets. He is a great scientist. That's just my personal opinion. Oh" and He is a great artist. Could these phobos collide into a planet. They are smaller in size but they can cause shock or something.
