- mstachiw, on 10/10/2008, -0/+18Liquid Mirror sounds like a rave... or something they'd sell at one
- divinediva, on 10/10/2008, -1/+14Yes!! Those are some sweet ideas. This would be a phenomenal opportunity for a new spaceflight company.
- Powerfan5000, on 10/10/2008, -0/+12Finally a reason for man to go back to the moon. I hope this gets the green light in the next few years.
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -1/+10/watches silently as an asteroid hurls towards the liquid mirror
- imnojezus, on 10/10/2008, -0/+8I wonder if dust would be a problem with a telescope on the moon. I realize there is no atmosphere and no wind, but one good sized meteorite could probably kick up enough dust to really screw the pooch.
- lornefs, on 10/10/2008, -2/+10Scientist 1: Ok we're ready to launch. 3...2....1....
Scientist 2: Wait, imnojezus just posted a possible problem on digg, did anyone think about the possible dust problems.
Scientist 1: Oh crap, abort abort!! - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6The first step toward turning the Moon into a death star.
- Taiyoryu, on 10/10/2008, -0/+6obligatory: size does matter
- kolyana, on 10/10/2008, -1/+6Yeah ... I wonder if they thought about that.
Being world renowned scientists, and all.
...
/s - Kn1ghtmare, on 10/10/2008, -2/+7You know, with a few adjustments to the mirror placements and order, I bet you could concentrate the unfiltered light from the sun into a beam of energy capable of burning off the rest of this pesky ozone we have...
- sarahbara, on 10/10/2008, -0/+5yay Canada
- FeloniusMonkey, on 10/10/2008, -0/+5Take the blue pill.
- isunktheship, on 10/10/2008, -0/+5sounds like the plot for a REALLY REALLY GOOD JAMES BOND MOVIE THAT I'D REALLY LIKE TO SEE, MAYBE WITH HALLE BERRY IN IT.
- drlha, on 10/10/2008, -0/+5Agreed, but off-topic so dugg down.
- ncc74656m, on 10/10/2008, -0/+5Cool. When can we start?
- tmc1, on 10/10/2008, -1/+5Liquid Mirror sounds like a new Flash plug-in.
- bgrah449, on 10/10/2008, -0/+4Could sell timeslots of the telescope in auctions, too, which would probably make $$$.
- RudeTurnip, on 10/10/2008, -0/+4Oh no! The liquid mirror would be shattered to....oh, wait.
- irishmcsg2, on 10/10/2008, -0/+4bingo. Gotta have a net gravitational pull on it to form the parabola.
- Hello1024, on 10/10/2008, -0/+4I'm guessing the liquid mirror requires the force of gravity to work effectively.
- lornefs, on 10/10/2008, -0/+4Well you know, he doesn't read well, not enough words like 'cuz' and 'wood' (would).
- kick, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3Though...I guess the liquid would just float away.
- YEEK, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3With the present economic situation, and all the debt we're assuming, we'll be lucky if we ever see any "big ideas" become reality.
What a terrible shame. - aereaus, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3Did you even read the article?
- Haecceity, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3Apparently you give enough of a ***** to comment.
- MalarkeyPN, on 10/10/2008, -1/+4Telescopes > Rocket Ships
- Forky, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3The quote of the day seems to fit here.
There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers.
- Richard Feynman - Analysis489, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3"A mirror that large could peer back in time..." This article = mind-blowing.
- Haecceity, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3We're not talking about ice here -- we're talking about a crystalline metal. I've never heard of a crystalline metal sublimating. But them I'm not a chemist.
- sipsyrup, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3What about telescopes on rocket ships?
- imnojezus, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3I'm sure it'd be addressed, I was just wondering aloud.
- DaviDTC, on 10/10/2008, -3/+6http://digg.com/space/Liquid_Mirror_Telescopes_on_ ...
Obviously you did not check the dupe detector as your title and description are an exact match and this would of shown up on there. - Haecceity, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2So why would mercury evaporate on the moon's surface? It would solidify at temperatures well above those found on the moon (which rules it out for use in a liquid mirror) but as a solid metal it would have a crystalline structure and I'm not clear why it would be any more prone to evaporation than, say, lead or copper. Just wondering if there's something I'm missing.
- peterinjapan, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2As a member of the "Where the ***** is is Moon Base Clavius? You owe us big time" post 2001 gneration, I say bring it, bitches.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Liquid Television.
- Pathetique, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Someone ate his Wheaties this morning...
- backflipper, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2I think that if a meteorite hit close enough to throw dust into the telescope, the dust would be the least of their problems.
- aereaus, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2nawww Photoshop
- spyd3rweb, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2How in the hell can it cost $1 million for a some liquid, a bucket, a motor and a camera? In fact i'll go build one for $5, and duct tape my Canon to it.
- Ramble, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2They already do that for normal telescopes.
- Forky, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2The moon has gravity, just not as much as the earth.
- Ramble, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2That's no moon.
- BlatheringIdiot, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2***** You- two of my friends died from OD'ing on WetShine, as it's called on the 'Coast. Liquid Mirror aint no walk in the park, my friend.
- minorgods, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2That dude in the pic is about to run out of oxygen
- OutlawSundown, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2
It really frustrates me that the ball was dropped after the moon landings. We should be years ahead of where we are now in terms of space flight. - xGeneric, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2If our economy wasn't turning to *****, we might actually have the money to work on projects like this. It's a shame this country didn't keep space exploration as one of our defining goals. Seems a lot more productive than blowing up countries with a marginally effective army.
The cost of building it seems cheap enough, but to get it to the moon I'm sure is quite a bit more. - morphkons, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2Ever heard of sublimation?
- BlatheringIdiot, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2***** You- two of my closest friends died from OD"ing on WetShine, as it's called on the 'coast. Liquid Mirror ain't no walk in the park, my friend.
