- fluidfoundation, on 12/26/2007, -6/+245Trillions of dollars of money later, they realize it was just a CZ.
- Elum, on 12/26/2007, -0/+197Actually... diamonds aren't truly that rare. They are just released in small amounts at a time so that they seem more rare than they really are.... it's.. more... of an artificially generated rareness..
- Xerces, on 12/26/2007, -0/+189dollars of money you say
- jquipp, on 12/26/2007, -2/+191Hands off ... its mine. I would have had a flag embedded in it by now but the drill bits weren't quite strong enough.
- WilliamHBonney, on 12/26/2007, -17/+181i guess more women will become astronauts now.
- inactive, on 12/26/2007, -1/+122Actually it's because DeBeers artificially limits the market supply.
Emeralds are actually rarer than diamonds, but cost far less. - SebHughes, on 12/26/2007, -6/+92Thats like 5 Canadian Dollars right?
- crimsonnblue, on 12/26/2007, -2/+87Yea.. I just need to get in my ROFLCOPTER...
- papastout, on 12/26/2007, -2/+71Somewhere in the world, or the universe, there is some arch-villan / evil overlord plotting how to get the big diamond into their super ray gun.
- fluidfoundation, on 12/26/2007, -3/+67dammit!
uh... in the future, money isnt made of dollars, but of cloned hot dogs. - MiDri, on 12/26/2007, -0/+63To curb inflation, it's brilliant!
- mrferg, on 12/26/2007, -0/+61Yup, diamonds are hard, make great drill bits and saw blade teeth. Much like how gold is a good electrical conductor and heat insulator, why people want to waste that ***** on rings and necklaces is beyond me.
- bradbeattie, on 12/26/2007, -1/+56Dude, I'm in awe at the potential size of your shed.
- cmyk, on 12/26/2007, -2/+52Too bad it's not being orbited by a large ring of gold.
- inactive, on 12/26/2007, -1/+50Do you think that diamond is accessible?
- halfnormalform, on 12/26/2007, -1/+49It doesn't matter. They'll want something else the next year.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 12/26/2007, -1/+49Because you're all becoming astronauts to search for deep-space diamonds?
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+47Why? Why do they make the money so tasty?!
- TwinTurboMike, on 12/26/2007, -0/+43Didn't anyone tell you? DeBeers already owns this one too.
- centran, on 12/26/2007, -0/+42You want to know how rare they are? We can MAKE diamonds in a lab. You would never be able to tell the difference. In fact, they would have to purposely put imperfections(which they can do) into the diamond because the best way to tell it was man-made would be because it was too perfect.
Read everyone else's comments. DeBeers as artificially raised the price of diamonds by limiting the supply and excellent marketing. - harrisbradley, on 12/26/2007, -0/+41somewhere dr. evil is putting his pinky in his mouth.
- freehunter, on 12/26/2007, -7/+44I really don't count Pravda as a reliable source, honestly most of their stuff reads like a bad version of The Onion.
- PhonicUK, on 12/26/2007, -0/+35No it would be more carbony
- bjs3171, on 12/26/2007, -0/+35what, you don't trust a news source that cites the number "million billion trillion trillion"? why not?
- dakilla91, on 12/26/2007, -8/+42Meh...it doesn't compare to the one I have hidden in my shed
- Dylson, on 12/26/2007, -0/+31Sell that ***** on craigslist fool.
- EdgarVerona, on 12/26/2007, -0/+30Why is the parent comment dugg up? Diamonds are less rare than most other precious gems. They're expensive because there is a monopoly on the acquiring and distributing of these gems.
There's some places in the world where you can dig in your backyard and find diamonds. But woe be onto you if you do and try to sell them. DeBeers is a famously wealthy company because they're famously ruthless and violent when people attempt to sell diamonds through anyone but them. They've leveled entire villages of people in third world nations to make sure that their monopoly on this not-so-rare commodity remains secure. - ZeeshanHasan, on 12/26/2007, -1/+31whats with the diamonds and the womens, its just a shinning stone so whats the fuss about it....
- qber, on 12/26/2007, -1/+31Not the same article, but I've seen this on Digg before. And back then it was already three years old. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/02/04021 ...
- jscnet, on 12/26/2007, -0/+28I normally wouldn't -- tabloid; however BBC covers it too:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3492919. ... - iDiggIt42, on 12/26/2007, -1/+28What the *****?
- EdgarVerona, on 12/26/2007, -0/+26On an unrelated note, DeBeers has begun development of an interplanetary vessel. The ship has appropriately been dubbed the "S.S. Rape And Pillage".
- mrjit, on 12/26/2007, -0/+26We call this marketing, my good friend. 100 years ago no one used diamond rings. Blame DeBeers and Her Royal Highness the Queen (she had the first diamond wedding.)
- smek2, on 12/26/2007, -2/+28Ahem. You're on Digg. So your girlfriends last name is probably jpeg and she doesnt really speak to you.
- jms10446, on 12/26/2007, -3/+28Great, Now my wife wants this for our Anniversary.
- drpaidout, on 12/26/2007, -7/+32Price of diamonds plummet....
- inactive, on 12/26/2007, -0/+23Next on DIGG : Digger goes missing and his house get flattened after visit from DeBeers
- Scrappy1850, on 12/26/2007, -2/+24Send the African children to space! We need those diamonds!
- TheKrillr, on 12/26/2007, -0/+21o.o dude. if you're gonna be an ass, at link be an ass properly.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm - crimsonnblue, on 12/26/2007, -0/+20GTFO of my interwebs...
- Jonjonr6, on 12/26/2007, -2/+22It's all women. I mean, if gemologists were smart, they would have told women that CZ was really hard to find or get. Then, men would have it made. But noooo, had to let that cat out of the bag.
- voisine, on 12/26/2007, -2/+22Ironically, the only thing that makes diamonds desirable over CZ for instance is rarity. If you somehow brought that thing to earth, cut and sold it, diamonds would become next to worthless.
- SteveDeGroof, on 12/26/2007, -0/+18Naw. Too much trouble. They'll just claim it's worthless without proper certification papers.
- EdgarVerona, on 12/26/2007, -0/+17... thus spake DeBeers.
- Jeffler, on 12/26/2007, -1/+17I don't get it, how is the digg community missing that this is total sarcasm? He even used the Leave Britney Alone meme at the end, along with using a marketing quote. Whatever, digg him down if you must, but this was complete and utter sarcasm.
- Jofaba, on 12/26/2007, -0/+16So there you have it. The answer to life, the universe, and everything is not, after all, 42. The question as to why we're here and how did it all come about has finally been answered: we're goddamned oysters. We fester, age, and die so that in the end, God or some gigantic alien race can have pretty jewelry. I hope that my speckle in that gigantic rock provides some amusement, if only for a brief moment.
- jscnet, on 12/26/2007, -0/+15BBC covering it too (for those that don't trust Pravda-Tabloid silliness)
Diamond star thrills astronomers
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3492919. ... - XenophobicAlien, on 12/26/2007, -0/+15no the reason diamond are worth so much is because woman are suckers and men who buy them the diamonds are idiots. Myself included.
- AriaStar, on 12/26/2007, -3/+16Take THAT, DeBeers. Looks like you don't control all the universe's diamonds anymore! Well, just the import.
Diamonds are overrated. Can my engagement ring be sapphire instead? Diamond accents are pretty, but as center stones, they are overrated, cliche, and far too expensive to truly express the precious love they are supposed to represent. - EdgarVerona, on 12/26/2007, -0/+13Any woman who can see past DeBeers' marketing ***** earns severe bonus points. It's hard to resist marketing bandwagons these days, and it takes a rare woman to do so. Kudos to you Nicc on the find. =)
