- NuclearIsShit, on 08/17/2008, -20/+79Good! Let them have the technology that they want. Maybe if we approached them in a positive way instead of sanctioning them all the time, threatening them, trying to spread massive propaganda around the world against them then maybe we could have better relations with them.
Yes they have said bad things and they aren't exactly a free country, but it we tried to be peaceful and stop antagonizing them all the time then maybe we could get somewhere without having to go to war. What the west wont be happy until they are all driving around on camels and living in the stone age again? - inactive, on 08/18/2008, -2/+48photoshopped pics or it didnt happen.
- ORBAT, on 08/18/2008, -8/+47Good for them. I find it surprising that Iran has joined the handful of nations that has (successfully) hurled stuff into orbit. Let's hope they continue to use this technology for peaceful purposes.
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -11/+36How dare they make advances in technology in their country!
- NightVortez, on 08/18/2008, -7/+30I really hope the west doesn't spin this, Iran has done plenty of bad things, but right now all it's really trying to do is advance as a nation, and with Israel breathing down their neck and vise versa I wouldn't say it's exactly easy, but I'm sure the people of Iran are proud of this achievement.
So, just to say as someone who lives in America, congratulations Iran. - rezaf3000, on 08/17/2008, -2/+25Footage of the launch can be seen on BBC:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/7566804.stm - h4ckler, on 08/18/2008, -14/+33The more I become aware of the international situation the more I feel that the middle eastern countries are not evil and that the US actually is EVIL. We site them as being state sponsors of terrorism and then we go around over throwing governments (CIA anyone?) and using mouth pieces like fox news for the republican warhawks agenda to spew their hate and war mongering. I couldn't believe when I was watching a new report on Fox and they had a 3 minute report on the war in Georgia and then went on to talk about John Edwards scandal for over 30 minutes. I almost vomitted. We need to wake up and take our country back. ...and now Bush openly says we DO NOT need a relationship with Russia?! Are you freakin' kidding me?
Who are we to say that WE can have nuclear weapons, but only we alone. I admire Iran for standing up to our corrupt elected officials and the rest of the uncomprimising westernized world. I fear that the US is going down a road that will only lead to yet again, more death and destruction. More of the same. :( - getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+18The multi-stage rocket is a potential delivery platform
- Khevenhuller, on 08/18/2008, -12/+26Bomb bomb bomb,
bomb bomb Iran.......
(McCain for president!!)
/sarcasm - alski707, on 08/18/2008, -7/+19The real storey here is how this will be perceived by the US goverment; an important thing that not everyone realises is that the capability to launch a satellite into orbit is mutely inclusive with having the capability to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile, aside from the actual warhead the technology is identical.
To the Neocons this is probably all very reminiscent of Sputnik, which was lunched from an R-7 Semyorka missile that was developed to be an ICBM but easily converted to orbital payload delivery, regardless of how much or how little thought of military applications went into Iran’s planning for this, to the US and its claims of Iran’s nuclear ambitions its just going to be another reason to go and drop some more bombs. - Ne007, on 08/18/2008, -10/+21"a move that could further exacerbate tensions with the West over its nuclear drive"
First the NeoCons/Zionists insert this little subliminal message that things are escalating because of such a thing as a satellite. But the whole message is false in the fact that the CIA and inspectors say that Iran doesn't even have a "nuclear drive".
It all sickens me. - LimeParrot, on 08/18/2008, -3/+13If I took McCain to where I used to live (in Iran) and let him try some of the Iranian pastry, his cholesterol would quadruple and the dinosaur would die instantly, but would probably change his mind about bombing the place to ***** creek...
- ORBAT, on 08/18/2008, -2/+11Give me one example of Iran acting belligerently in the last 10 years.
- ParticleMan420, on 08/18/2008, -0/+9if you can launch a satellite attached to a missile into space you can launch a missile pretty much anywhere on earth with whatever type of 'payload' you choose. for instance an explosive devise, like a nuke, that they arent working on, cross their heart!
- DeFex, on 08/18/2008, -2/+9"compact pdf" isnt that an oxymoron
- altgeeky1, on 08/18/2008, -5/+11Those against a confrontation with Iran will mod you down.
Those FOR a confrontation will mod you down (because you are not sticking to the right-wing think tank Talking Points..! You're supposed to tap into the audience's "fear of them" and encourage the audience to conflate 'enemies' [such as 'they' Iraq and 9-11], but you're not supposed to say it because it's factually untrue).
If you meant irony (and I believe you did), you should terminate your paragraph with the word. - foopirata, on 08/18/2008, -2/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_AMIA_bombing

And so on, and so forth... - dafragsta, on 08/18/2008, -1/+6Oh, the bipolar nature of politics. It always has to be one extreme or the other, never a measured dose of either.
Iran is a theocracy led by militant Muslims. Their people might be far more progressive and might even want peace with the rest of the world with the added benefit of financial and diplomatic security, but the same could be said for the US.
Most foreign America haters are no different than domestic Iran haters. They don't know where to separate their feelings on either side of acceptance well enough to be pragmatic about the fact that both of the GOVERNMENTS of these two countries are the problem, not the people. Granted, US has very little excuse since they elect the president who establishes an administration based on his ideals and most people just vote for the guy they'd wanna have a drink with, because ***** in the sticks have a more meaningful vote than people who live in bigger cities.
Iran is ONLY a threat because of their government, and as much as the sane people among us would like to extend a diplomatic olive branch, you have to understand that part of the tension is because of the US cowboy attitude and part of it is because of the Iranian cowboy wearing a wrapped head dress attitude.
Cooler heads will never prevail on this planet until average citizens stop treating foreign diplomacy like a TV show and something they are intimately responsible for and that radical idealism is not the way to go. Only then will there be real peace. - stormofswords, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5Money and power > religious extremism. Do you think the people in charge of Iran want to just simply give up their good lives of affluence? Greed and a love of extravagance transcend cultures and religions.
- smurfsahoy, on 08/18/2008, -3/+7Yes they're in violation of a coerced agreement. That's like saying you can't feel sorry for a guy who got mugged, because he agreed to give up his wallet.
Give me a break. - brettg102, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4whooosh
- Jexie, on 08/18/2008, -3/+7The US backs out of their treaties and violates borders all the time so what's your point?
All this talk of theocratic regimes, rhetoric and consequences for violating well established treaties and borders sounds like it applies more the US these days than it does to Iran or Russia. This 'do as we say, not as we do' mentality just doesn't work anymore, the US no longer holds sole superpower status and the only country that doesn't get it is the US. - nick1971, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4Sorry Pradvan but they also invented

- LimeParrot, on 08/18/2008, -2/+6@nick
I personally don't want *any* country to obtain nuclear weapons, and my country is no exception. But what Iran is doing is completely justified given the continued harassment by particularly the US over the last 30 years. When Bush labels your country as an axis of evil, then some form of self defense becomes top priority.
It's also worth pointing out that nuclear energy for civil use is completely legal for Iran, and that the IAEA has found no evidence for the allegations against Iran (attempting to create a nuclear weapon).
McCain is a warmonger and a neo-con. He'll continue to strive for what neo-cons strive for: separating the Middle East into small countries without centralized leadership... so they could 'drink the milkshake', as Daniel Planeview would put it (haha).
Ron Paul was the only nominee who had the guts to tell the American people a lot of truth. He understands and acknowledges blow-back and was the only one who expressed moral outrage against a preemptive (nuclear) strike against Iran. Obama is not as open but is still a good nominee as he is willing to talk to Iran, unlike Bush.
So dear Americans: I love you guys and all, but after Bush got reelected, I was pretty sad. And I'll tell you guys right now, if you let McCain win this election, you'll seriously drop in my respect book. - DeathfireD, on 08/18/2008, -3/+7or just shoot their satellite and hope they don't notice it was us.
- nendoke, on 08/18/2008, -4/+8what ever you want to say, My country rocks, I hate government but engineers are smart. We ruled the world when US even did not exist, we were proud but just this government....
P.S. I am drunk and this ***** alcohol is our invention. - catcher6250, on 08/18/2008, -1/+5Nukes launched from space as well! (which they don't have)
- pyper, on 08/18/2008, -1/+4Ummm exactly who are you going to protect us from? The Mexicans? in case you have not noticed probably the only country that we are in ANY danger of ever being invaded by is the US.
Additionaly we would need to have really pissed off a nation for them to attempt a long distance attack or invasion, and once again you may not have noticed that we do not go around the world pissing off other nations. - Elohir, on 08/18/2008, -4/+7What are the actual implications of this, re weapons capability?
- steveoco, on 08/18/2008, -9/+12Good on em! However I can bet the US will jump on any chance to make it equal a step towards conflict. Iran is still a growing country who needs support right now, not war.
- zmower, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3If China can blow up one of their own then they can blow up one of yours. Maybe this was a response to the treaty that China offered to ban weapons in space that the US rejected.

- MrErr, on 08/18/2008, -1/+4Part of the NPT is that nuclear powers have to reduce their nuclear weapons. We are not doing that. So we also are in violation of the NPT.
- zigardne, on 08/18/2008, -5/+8Congratulations Iran!!
Why all the hate towards Iran, I'm not worried about them, no air force, their navy consists of like 6 row boats and some flare guns, and they have a satellite delivery system; half a century ago we were putting men on the moon. Keep on trucking Iran,
I just wish they'd stop getting into dick swinging contests with us (even if we bait them), everyone knows we are the John Holmes of the world. - MrErr, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3For those not old enough ... here is the link.

- Risingashes, on 08/18/2008, -3/+5OC73 is from alterna-future where McCain wins and where implying that party officials may some day die is an actionable offense.
All Hail the Leaders. May we forever be blanketed by their warm proxy embrace. - sodade, on 08/18/2008, -1/+3It would only be spam if it were unrelated to the topic at hand. Besides, it is not my submission, I don't care about diggs - I just want to hear the US apologists try to explain how our stance against Iran is Iran's fault.
- mambanamba, on 08/18/2008, -2/+4how cute, iran finally has a satellite
- pyper, on 08/18/2008, -1/+3they would have to launch a lot more than that, if you want to accuse anyone of messing up space blame the USA and Russia

- glutamate, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2That depends on whether Iran actually launched the rocket themselves. A lot of the time companies will build a satellite and have it launched by a different company.
- ftoro, on 08/18/2008, -1/+3Congratulations to Iran, and all Iranians everywhere.
This is an incredible technological achievement. - AndrewMoyer, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1The footage is tanked right now from all the traffic, most likely. I wasn't able to see it.
- dubfunk, on 08/18/2008, -1/+2"we want to wipe israel off the face of the earth"
You ***** talking-point shill. Heil Goebels! Why don't you research what Amindabidajmidad actually said and read 3-4 "different" translations to understand what he was really saying. King George the 4th, would be proud of your allegiance.
Ever heard of nuclear fallout? Ever heard of nuclear winter. What about Chernobyl? What happened there? Where did the radiation end up?
Also, Amindabadijad has NO power. Let me say it one more time. He has NO power and is just a voice and a reason for the reich to condemn a few more of our children to the glorious and heroic role of cannon-fodder.
I love the people because they deserve and want to be free. - nick1971, on 08/18/2008, -1/+2As you have lived in Iran, what is your take on the situation?
- smurfsahoy, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1I don't think that would work. If a tiny chunk of debris hits a satellite, it just makes a hole. That satellite will now be inoperable, but it's not going to randomly explode and cause any kind of chain reaction. Satellites destroyed would be pretty much arithmetically related to the number of grenade satellites launched.
- gullevek, on 08/18/2008, -10/+11What kind of tensions? did the ***** west think that next to russia nobody will launch a satellite. Oh my, some "so evil muslim country" launched a Satellite ...
