- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30You don't get satellite porn, you ARE the satellite porn!
- FuzzyBunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Manned space exploration and developement has been so stagnant for the last several decades. It's really exciting to see the commercial sector start to take over where NASA and other agencies have pretty much given up.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Two questions come to mind here:
1. How much is room service?
2. Can I still get pay-per-view porn? - drinkGreen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Take THAT 1,000 Mile club!
- tpaine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Too bad there are not actual pictures of the satellite :-
cheasy pre-rendered pictures just don't do it for me - boneill428, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'd like to see my ex-girlfriend up there
- wolfkeeper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It had better not be as high as 1000 miles- that's in the Van Allen radiation belt!
"Where you been dude? You're positively glowing! And what have you done with your hair?"
"It fell out." - CaptainEO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This is probably the start of the marketing campaign to promote Rob Snyder's latest movie:
Deuce Bigelow: Space Gigolo - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10As neat as a "space hotel" sound, I am saddened by the fact that I could never afford staying there. It's probably just going to be for rich folks.
- splammo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'd like to see your ex-girlfriend up there also...
if you know what I mean. - dankosaur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I do like the trend of private sector mannde space R&D. We shouldn't have to stretch our already thin government resources to advance this field...
- WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me.
This is not a joke.
You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons.
SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED.
I have only done this once before. - kadesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It will need a battle room somewhere. Finally, I'll be able to live out my Ender fantasies.
- Kazenodeku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Wow. "Genesis". Could they be any more creative/original?
- craigosbourne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4didd anyone notice what seemed to look like skype on the left hand side on the screen in picture 12 :-),
- CheeseIsGood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Budget Suites? Shelling out that kind of $$, I want luxury!:
"Bigelow is no novice in the hospitality industry; he made his fortune as the owner of Budget Suites of America."
Another aspect of this that I find crazy is that the power grid went out so the tracking station was down:
"A long rope of extension cords was connected to a restaurant with power down the street, and manually pointing the antenna allowed SpaceQuest to hear the initial signal from Genesis I."
What is wrong with the US power grid!?! Enron must have been involved :-) Guess a generator will be on their shopping list. - DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not an issue, really, when you consider the speed at which your average space debris travels, even if it were a totally metal hull, it's likely there would still be a micro-puncture.
I think it's worth pointing out that space is dangerous and that everyone that goes into space has to consider they might not come back. It's not like going to see the Grand Canyon or something. Ultimately, I believe the risk is still worth the reward. - woxidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The launch procedure was not without its glitches--not in space but on Earth. SpaceQuest of Arlington, Va., was supposed to communicate with Genesis I, but a heavy storm caused a last-minute power outage, knocking out the tracking station. A long rope of extension cords was connected to a restaurant with power down the street, and manually pointing the antenna allowed SpaceQuest to hear the initial signal from Genesis I."
How... resourceful? - Grub, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10i'd rather see funds from military shifted to NASA rather than NASA losing all funding and going completely private. Anyway, if the private sector expands largely, the government sector will be forced to expand to police the private sector. Either way, its expansion for the better.
- dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well most space debris travels so fast that the strength of the shell of the craft is fairly irrelevent.
- splammo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"do the dirty dead"
unplesant thought especially in space - 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How about Room 101???
- Narpas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You can take my ex, too.
Have fun. >.> - MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yes, but how is the view?
- bodger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Finally they'll have an excuse for out-of-this-world charges if you use the phone in your room.
- zeerocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The honeymoon suite would be wickedly fun.
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes. You'd think battery backup and/or generators would already have been in place.
- gandre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jeez.... I wouldn't want to be sent off in space knowing that mission control is running windows!
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd like to see an original Game Boy in space. They've already survived months of playing and abuse, children and all of the atrocities they commit to their belongings, being submerged in a bucket of oil (story in Nintendo Power), and a bunker-buster bomb in Desert Storm (on display at Nintendo World in NYC). Now, we need Tetris in space!
- consoneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The biggest problem I see is space debris hitting it... They're supposed to be "Inflatable" as was mentioned in a previous article... I wonder how they will hold up.
- Inverno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Right now they're letting you send items/photographs to space. $295 per item. I can't think of anything I'd like to see in space that badly.
http://www.bigelowaerospace.com/reservation/ - listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bob Bigelow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bigelow), who made his money through the Budget Suites of America hotel chain. Essentially, he's funding the entire company with his own money (and, I presume, a few VCs).
PS: there's a digg bug that disallows updating URLs :( - 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://i.n.com.com/i/ne/p/2006/717genesis_1_400x297.jpg
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent. Mankind is one step closer to sex in space. Next step is the first zero-gravity porno.
- venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Necrophilia is wrong.
- bertilak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They aren't making any more are they? I say use them up.
- VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now if that's not a comment bound to lead to some derisive follow-ups, I don't know what is...
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heh. Looks like the private sector will always end up with superior equipment and technology than the government. Less strigent testing and larger amounts of funding are probably the reason.
That 'Quite please, mission in progress' sign REALLY reminds me of Nadesico. - Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder who is going to be the first people to do the dirty dead in space.
- woxidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly. Better that they put sleezy motel rooms in space than put explosions on enemies. Why /not/ use them for this?
- NoodleGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not only does the program you refer to "look like skype," but if you look close it says "Skype" right in the window.
- glafira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder where they got the money.
- osc1882, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://news.com.com/2300-11397_3-6093888-11.html?tag=ne.gall.pg
4 Screens, not fair! I want that setup like yesterday already. - leva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just, way cool!!
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@grub removing funds from the millitary is a realy stupid idea esp during war let the private secter handle it the goverment doesnt handle tourism directly so why should it handle space travel i mean it might have a tourism department but that doesnt mean it controls it
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i need to go back in time to recover my watch.
- YetiMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very pricey
I don't think i could get the money to get up there - borchard76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Did anyone watch the first two? Maybe its the company I keep, but I don't know anyone that actually watched those films.
The title you suggest, however, is extremely likely, and that is a highly depressing thought. - inactive, on 12/06/2007, -0/+0Cheapest and the best data recovery service in the world.
