  • Lunarsight, on 10/07/2008, -0/+2Just as astronomers argued over what the bottom limit for a planet was, it's going to happen at the other end as well. They'll inevitably be arguing over where to draw the line between planet and brown dwarf.

    (It's been said that Jupiter, had it been a little larger/more massive, could have ignited and become a companion star to the Sun. It even generates some of its own internal heat.)

  • iChopPryde, on 10/07/2008, -2/+3Thats actually an extremely interesting theory, though I beleive in theory that is actually possible but you would have to move faster then the speed of light in order to see it or whatever happened at that moment. That would be tricky obviously and also having to time it correctly to be in the right spot to where the light would hit and you are seeing the right time line.
  • inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+1For goodness sake! This is an interesting result, but hardly explanation defying. There is obviously a continuum of substellar objects gas giant - to brown dwarf. Two proximal orbiting bodies are in stable equilibrium, ergo you would expect to find all sorts of combination of stars and or large planets orbiting each other.
