- GreatGrizzly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Scientist 1: "So according to our calculations, the asteroid will miss us by 432,308 kilometers."
Scientist 2: "Lets me see that...you forgot to carry your 3."
Scientist 1: "Oh, thank you, the exact distance is.....oh *****." - infinium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29It's not gonna crash into us.....Damn, I was about to call Scientology. Maybe they could all put purple triangles over their head and kill themselves.
- nixr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20That's no moon. That's a space station.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Can we throw a little nuke at it... Just to see how it reacts. :) Practice makes better.
- Continuum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I'm sorry EBone, but astronomers renamed Uranus in 2620 to end that stupid joke once and for all. What's it called now you ask? Urectum.
a-thank you. - vexter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14That is acually a really bad idea, but hey, WTF, Im in.
- settsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15OMG! End of the WORLD!!!
7-3-2006
7+3+2+0+0+6=18
18 = 6+6+6
666!!! - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If the Moon gets close enough to Earth the next time it orbits us, it will likely crash into us too.
- HawkeyeMatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Mine too (but I don't think anyone cares)
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Oh come on... Why can't it just wait a day?
- Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Huge Asteroid Destroys France
July 4th, 2006
"Ooops. We must have forgot a decimal place...", said one leading astronomer. - D4V1S, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Albrecht is having a spacelover-orgasm right now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's not really that close in 2002 we have one pass 1/3 distance to the moon from us..120,000 km (74,000 miles) That was a close shave.
But the closest recorded(not in stone) was in 1994 at 105,000 km (65,000 miles)
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news130.html - jakatak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sorry. North Korea has dibs on the asteroid.
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This stuff happens alot. The only reason youre hearing much about it is because space.com is hyping it up cuz it occurs around the fourth of july and space.com wants to seem relevant like they actually have something to do.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The ones recorded in stone actually hit.
- shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wait a min arn't all the USA "leaders" in the next few weeks planing a "disastor simulation" where there going to all go into a secure location for a few days???
sounds like it is gonna hit the earth.
damnit! - burjzyntski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Due to the proximity of its orbit to Earth [Map] and its estimated size, this object has been classified as a “Potentially Hazardous Asteroid” (PNA) by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There are currently 783 PNAs.
Where does the N in PNA come from?
..PHA? - dragonsani1976, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21+8=9 Which is the old school number for God. Just in case no one thought of that.
- Kakgak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ID4 anyone? Just keep on eye on that sucker to see if it slows down.
- quicksilver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There is also a video of a pretty good size of an asteroid to bounce off our gravity in Canada some years ago.
- jlowe64, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That was the funniest thing I've ever read. Thank you.
- n00bvin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No one thinks it's odd that the whole 4,000 gov't people are in bunker thing is going on right now as well... coincidence?
edit: Damn you shaolinpunks

...or "just in case"? - Knives, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It can't be... it's too big to be a space station!
- Kakgak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bounce off our gravity? wha?
- Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nah, the headline would more likely read "France Destroyed; Bush Administration Gets *****"
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Bounce off our gravity?
- cmyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Puh-lease. Everybody knows you can easily stop them by uploading a virus into their mothership with a PowerBook. Either that, or just get drunk off yer ass and fly your F-16 into the center hole. That seems to blow them up. Go figure.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dont you mean bounce off our atmosphere?
- darthrsg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also that the shuttle is going up on the 1st....
- ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This what I was thinking....
- joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HAHA! naw man... he means bounce off our gravity just like he said. Haven't ya heard? You bounce off gravity every time the man tells ya to jump!
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1poster boy for space cadets
- Stemster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think it would be fun to blast a rocket up there, plant a bunch of cameras on it and see where it goes....but wait...we would have to plan that all out NOW!
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please call them anyway. If you can convince them, I'll buy them each a pair of Nikes for the 'journey.'
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if it will be as close or viewable as the hale-bop. Now that was pretty cool.
Um, which reminds me, perhaps I should look into some Nike stock. There may be a spike in sales in the next couple of weeks... - ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know this isn't a comet, but check IMDB for Night of the Comet. Pretty similar situation. I am selling comet-on-a-spring headpieces tomorrow (tinsel included). I will make a killing! Just gotta spend it fast. I will also have tinfoil hats on special close-out sale.
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the asteroid is a planet killer size, it won't matter where they run and hide.
- dudinatrix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That's my birthday! (i know you were wondering)
- Metatron197, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1well itll be good fireworks
- DellMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3if it gets close enough to earth next time it is near it will hit us, i heard that on the discovery channel a few days ago.
- EBone, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Whew. That was close. Im sure you must have felt a twitch in Uranus.
- sp9000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0you guys that dont believe are all idiots. This was on the discovery channel. an Aasteroid is infact in aliment with the earch. the year 2036 is when the the asteroid, Apophis will either pass very closly to us or hit us in 2036,
NASA alongwith with american scientist and the Near Earth Object Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and many other private firms such as the B612 Foundation, founded in 2001 by former atronaut, Rusty Schewickart of the Appollo 9 mission in 1969 have all confirmed that on April 13, 2029 an steroid known as Apophis will pass through Earth within a close proximity of 18,000 to 20,000 which they have claimed to be " is a mere within stone's throw, shorter than a round trip flight between New York and Melbourne, Australia.. " At that time, the ateroid will be the first in human history to be visible to the naked eye.
Seven years later, on April 13, 2036 it will return as it makes its second orbit around Earth and this time it will be far more closer than it will appear in 2029. Scientist are certain that " the planet (Earth) will be squarely in the crosshairs for a potentially catastrophic asteroid impact..

- blink21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yeah, no need to put your white sneakers on and drink the purple cult concoction... but maybe you can see it with a telescope
- adamlazz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How long would you be able to see it?
Concidering that it was in your hemisphere, and at night. - IceSt0rm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bush recently had the navy shoot down a blue children's balloon from the sky in what they claim to be a regular anti-asteroid weapons test. Sources believe Bush is testing this system to see if it will be able to counter the expected Arachnid assault in 2029.
In other news, the Arachnids are stalling talks once again. After several weeks and 278 naval officers of repeated attempts of negotiation, the "Bugs" still aren't complying with US demands on claims the "Brain Bug" still doesn't have enough juice. Analysts fear the Arachnids will continue to stall until 2029 or the Navy runs out of officers. - anniethink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fsa
- Orbital, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i whish i had a bunker to hide in... (just incase)
