- zyklon, on 09/15/2009, -1/+19Wow, second time in two days. Not bad.
There's nothing wrong with the system. Nothing at all. - digggggggggg, on 09/15/2009, -0/+14Who the hell uses a sig for digg comments?
- achansen121, on 09/15/2009, -3/+14Front page again?
- ghostrc, on 09/15/2009, -0/+9This is the new volcano project
- hellengineer, on 09/15/2009, -1/+5this is the second dupe of this one

- Tubal22, on 09/15/2009, -2/+6For a power user, this guy sure doesn't read digg much.
- ButchersBoy, on 09/15/2009, -0/+3Even cheaper: download a picture off the internet.
- dgendreau, on 09/15/2009, -0/+3WTF? How does one fail at mixing vinegar and baking soda? My 6 year old could do that.
- iritegood, on 09/15/2009, -0/+3The -other- edge of space would be much more impressive.

"failed" stating end result of non-hypothetical situation.
you would've tried to comment coherently. and failed. - Turbotronic, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1Some students at Oklahoma State University have actually done better than simply take pictures--they sent a custom-built ionization chamber on the balloon to measure the radiation environment as a function of altitude:

Here are additional photos taken by their engineer colleagues:

- kingfoot, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1***** science volcanos. mine never worked...
- dodger2020, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1Exactly. Which is why it's not practical to sustain an orbit at that altitude.
- buddypriefert, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1USA! Hell Yeah!
- sanman, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1I wonder why people can't build a Poor Man's Hubble by floating a space telescope on a balloon, above most of the atmosphere?
Just make the balloon donut-shaped and put a parabolic reflector in the middle.
Maybe some university could try something like that some day, and then they could take all the Hubble-style photos they wanted. - sanman, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1orbit comes from achieving escape velocity, and not by how high you are
even if you were 500 miles above the Earth, you'd still fall back down if your tangential velocity wasn't fast enough - dodger2020, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1LEO is IN space. This balloon only went 1/3 of the way TO space. Even then, it's not really feasible to sustain an orbit at the official "edge" of space.
- ole1kanobe, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1I kind of question their materials/weights list. Who ever heard of a styrofoam beer cooler weighing 0g??
- sanman, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1we'll do it live!
from space! - eur0pa, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1Here we go again. Lots of babbling and four pictures.
- indyGuy, on 09/15/2009, -1/+1It's just that cool
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 09/15/2009, -1/+1Yep, third.
- shlerm, on 09/15/2009, -2/+2wow, they have been doing this a lot lately
- panlane, on 09/15/2009, -0/+0Some Spanish high school kids did this months ago.

MIT better get their act together. - LeftsideChaos, on 09/15/2009, -1/+14th or 5th time this year.
- inactive, on 09/15/2009, -3/+3Deja vu.
- Parrappa, on 09/15/2009, -2/+1How is LEO the edge of space?
- roho76, on 09/15/2009, -4/+2NASA would've spent 4 Billion to accomplish the same thing. And failed.
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 09/15/2009, -4/+1Three times.
REALLY, Digg. - julesgonz01, on 09/15/2009, -14/+0$150 to take pictures in space? Now they need to make this thing manueverable to take pics of specific locales. I still think its cool though.
