- justjoehere, on 12/23/2007, -4/+52They would abduct us, probe us, erase our memories and put us back in our trailer park.
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -4/+43Of course, what they would really see is the dinosaurs since they are just now getting light from 300 million years ago. "O look makluak, a planet full of giant lumbering lizards..."
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -2/+34I think if Aliens ever studied earth, the report would look something like this:
Subject: hairless primates of planet earth.
Worships small furry animals called dog or cat and follows them around to pick up their *****. The use of the ***** is still unknown.
State of technology: primitive use of electricity and electronic communications devices.
Solves conflicts by mass murder.
Divided species, thinks it's important.
A vast part of this species asks for special favors before going to bed by talking to their ceiling with their hands joined together.
Very few reasonnable individuals.
Exponential and uncontrolled growth: this is a parasite.
Do not visit. - shiv68, on 12/23/2007, -1/+26
I watched a one hour show about ants a couple of weeks back. - ngageguy, on 12/23/2007, -0/+16Earth:"Mostly Harmless" - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
- Maddoktor2, on 12/23/2007, -2/+17They'd observe a huge radio source in addition to our sun, and probably speculate that our solar system has two stars.
- MasterPlayer, on 12/23/2007, -5/+20They would probably make a reality TV show called "Earth" and laugh at how one of the most powerful nation's in the world is run by idiots.
- Exodust, on 12/23/2007, -0/+12300 million years?? We are talking about 1000 light years and nearer. They'll see the earth as it was near 1000 A.D. No dinosaurs here...
And 300 million years? Dude, even Andromeda galaxy is like 2 million light years away, and we can't even resolve most of the stars in it, let alone planets... - bentman78, on 12/23/2007, -0/+11It would be difficult to tell. The universe is huge let alone the galaxy. Chances of them scanning for signals in this section of the galaxy during our lifetime is very unlikely. Still, Hawking said this of contact aliens:
""I think it would be a disaster. The extraterrestrials would probably be far in advance of us. The history of advanced races meeting more primitive people on this planet is not very happy, and they were the same species. I think we should keep our heads low."
Unfortunately I think he's right. We would have nothing to give them or would be benefit to them whatsoever. I think there was some statistical analysis I read somewhere giving us a less than 1 percent chance of this happening, I can't remember where though. Still the Drake Equation is an interesting read. - marc123, on 12/23/2007, -0/+10wishful thinking?
- cmost, on 12/23/2007, -2/+12They would marvel at the fact that such narrow-minded, arrogant warlike creatures as ***** sapiens actually managed to get anything done in 5000 years.
- mablung, on 12/23/2007, -0/+8That ceiling stuff made me pit out my drink, thank you.
- bdogm, on 12/23/2007, -0/+8Or maybe one star and a wifi hotspot.
- naughtyboy, on 12/23/2007, -0/+8It's only realistic. If you were an alien, wouldn't you be the first in your planetary system to have sex with an alien race? After all, they would have their memories erased.
- naughtyboy, on 12/23/2007, -0/+8Earth is a reality show. It's been airing on my home planet for millenniums. Too bad it has been canceled. Last episode is airing this Christmas. I think it's called "Blow up" or something.
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -0/+8What if we're the first to even make it this far? I often wonder what that'd be like, if we started exploring the universe and discovered that we were the most advanced species out there. No evil empires out to destroy us, no benevolent beings to impart wisdom on us, no one to even form a galactic federation with, just a bunch of cave men banging rocks together. We always assume that we can't possibly be #1 in the universe - it'd probably be a bit crushing to discover otherwise. And lonely. Hmm... Gives me an interesting idea for a book.
- localzuk, on 12/23/2007, -1/+8Nah, the power of the signals coming from earth is minute. It would be too small to be a star, so would probably be dismissed as a spacial anomaly or reflection of signals from the sun.
- Kronos6948, on 12/23/2007, -0/+6I don't remember where I heard or read this, (I'm definitely paraphrasing because it's been so long since I've heard it) but I believe this to be true:
They'd see we have all of our own weapons pointed at ourselves and realize that there's something wrong with us, and leave us alone. - annabegonia, on 12/23/2007, -0/+5Watch Communion with Christopher Walken. They'd send the little blue *****!
- drgruney, on 12/23/2007, -0/+5Jokes on them when they get here! Those lizards are really just bones the devil put in the ground.
Also bananas are proof of intelligent design. This I know, because Kirk Cameron told me so. - inactive, on 12/23/2007, -1/+6Actually, there are numerous military that have testified in public that UFOs contain at the very least extraterrestrials and at the most extreme interdimentional beings. One of may groups would be the Disclosure Project - which, like most humans and groups of humans, has its strengths and weaknesses.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Disclosure_Projec ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vyVe-6YdUk
http://www.disclosureproject.org/ - sammytom, on 12/23/2007, -1/+6Maybe watching of the show does not, but what about the filming of the show? Lots of time and money went into filming, editing and airing the show about the ant hill.
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -1/+5How many times does it have to stated that UFO=/=aliens in flying saucers?
- jj101, on 12/23/2007, -1/+5Was it Attenborough? He's a legend and his shows are fantastic.
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -1/+5i'd create hybrid bloodlines between my extra terrestrial race and humans and put them in positions of power on earth and steer global events towards my desired outcome over thousands of years so they never resist or question it.
- naughtyboy, on 12/23/2007, -1/+5They will decode the first radio signals, and soon they will discover Hitlers speeches. Soon after that they will ignite their plasma cannons, just in case.
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -1/+5ooh look at the funny hairless house apes. 80% of them believe in imaginary beings and some of them even get other ones to kill each other and say their imaginary beings ordered them to.
the imaginary friends are also used as excuse to mistreat the other life on the planet.
leave them be, maybe they will see some sense , but if they ever manage to get out of their local star system before the disease is cured WIPE THEM OUT. - Lung-Dart, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3Did anyone notice this article has nothing to do with the title? It goes on about how we plan to find earth like extrasolar planets, after a blurb of how MIT scientist now know how alien astronomers would see earth. It never explains how, and its crazy to think that they would be using the same technology and methods as us.
Buried for inaccurate title. - ieatsmurfs, on 12/23/2007, -1/+4They would demand to see McBeal!
- naughtyboy, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3That's obvious isn't it. Someone left him, and he hopes to be rescued.
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3Actually, if you look you will see that there is testimony that the military is in constant contact and has been since the time of WWII "Foo Fighters."
Regarding how this may help - it could be argued that a curiosity about the natural world is a good thing and that understanding our surroundings better would be a good thing. Therefore, even if certain things may be unknown we may wish to continue inquiry in the hopes that one day we would know additional information. Also, it could be argued that historically as the world view of humans became larger (ex: earth revolves around sun, earth not flat, etc) it could often lead to the opportunity to throw off the ideologies used by government / organized religion / etc to control "the masses." In other words, if we are being visited by civilizations that are tens of thousands of years ahead of us technologically (ex; interdimentional travel) there is a strong possibility that they have already gone through our stage of development long ago without destroying themselves too many times and that we could benefit from their knowledge - even if it was shocking (ex: there are hundreds of races visiting and the most stupid created us like a child's science experiment, to be monitored over hundreds of thousands of years - and that we are one of millions of such experiments) - krisscofield, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3I'm pretty sure if we can't find any evil empires to fight, or vicious insectoid races to exterminate, we'll still be plenty busy killing one another. Culture (x) would go out colonize planet (y), and so on and so on.
- Betrayer, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3then they shake the planet restarting the whole process again for the next set of alien 3rd graders.
- localzuk, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2Well, Red Dwarf, the books, had that concept as a premise. They had searched the entire universe and found nothing... So it would be nothing new in terms of a novel.
If that is the case then there is no reason not to search planets, gut them and absorb their resources. - manitoba98xp, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2Well, they'd arrive on Earth after we caught their attention. They'd invade using portals and take over the Earth, using a hybrid species with ours (already adapted to Earth's conditions) as a military force, their technology as a means of control, and a human "administrator" as the public face of their regime. Rise and shine, Mr. Freeman.
- 0crabby0, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2Exactly, observers probably would not be interested in us unless we could create and manipulate a singularity(black hole).
- olddirtycr, on 12/23/2007, -1/+3Haha.......
You being a good typist, No? - bentman78, on 12/23/2007, -2/+4I'm betting it was a grammatical mistake and not intentional. Comment buried, this is a cool article and there is no reason to bring politics into this.
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2yes its very important for the aliens to look like humans, it has saved billions of dollars in special effects over the hears.
- MadEnvoy, on 12/23/2007, -1/+3Garbage pit.
- JigsawX, on 12/23/2007, -1/+3They might be able to see GW's oversize Head Maybe.
- inactive, on 12/24/2007, -1/+3How Would Extraterrestrial Astronomers Study Earth?
We could invite them here and enroll them in one of California's public schools.
Heck, in no time they'd learn how boink each other in the butt or to knock one another up. They'd become proficient in skills learned in the schools such as, rapping, capping someone in the head, and going down town to apply for food stamps, welfare, and gubberment cheese, using a state approved form printed in the Spanish that they learned on the school's playground. And since they'd be guests here, they could even vote for Obama with da white mama in the '08 election without the benefit of having an address here on the planet or an I.D.. - inactive, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2Is that you, David Icke?
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2Let hope not, else we may wake to the sight of a giant can of RAID in orbit some morning........
- naughtyboy, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2Advanced civilizations will most certainly have modified DNA making them superior in every respect. We will be less than monkeys compared to them. Hopefully they are not zookeepers.
- Betrayer, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2AND THEN WHAT? ok so the military says they see these things all over on a daily basis, they dont comunucate with us and "we have no idea what the hell they are". how would that help the people of earth?
- Jumile, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2They'd start by looking for intelligent life, see the poorly trained monkeys we choose to run our little clans, rightly conclude that there is none, and move on.
- inactive, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2I just watched a show 5 minutes ago that made the same analogy. Was either Michio or SETI guy. I still disagree with it, us possessing higher intelligence, but it did make me think that a species with interstellar travel would almost certainly decide on a policy of non-interference while studying us.
- thomashauk, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Actually in some spectra we're brighter than the rest of the galaxy put together....
- thomashauk, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1War is our great driver, Example in point is the cold war driving the space race, what milestone have we achieved since that ended?
Even better is WWII, Radar, the jet engine, THE FIGGING COMPUTER, guided missiles, nuclear technology, rocketry... in fact in those 6ish years the modern world, compare to the last 6... yeah great, youtube. -
