Two spectacular high-res photos snapped on 4 September 2008 of NASA's Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-125) on top of Launch Pad 39A . . .

- scottarver, on 09/06/2008, -0/+25Does anyone else notice the blurry sphere to the left of the tip of the orange cone?
- mightyjlr, on 09/06/2008, -0/+24The water spraying is so that they don't kick up any dust. They want to keep outside contaminants on the shuttle to an absolute minimum.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+22Water. It keeps the dust down.™
- VIJoe, on 09/06/2008, -0/+14I think that I - like many - became too used to the Shuttle. The immensity of this operation is incredible. Wonderful photo!
- makemoneynotart, on 09/06/2008, -1/+15I'd fly it.
- mrgeekguy, on 09/06/2008, -0/+13I'd hate to be stuck behind that thing.
- vroom101, on 09/06/2008, -2/+15Five additional spectacular high-resolution photos, also snapped on 4 September 2008, of USA-Crown-Jewel Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-125) . . .

http://gigapxl.org/images/CanaveralDay1920.jpg - Terasiel, on 09/06/2008, -1/+10I can't wait till technology like this is referenced simply for comedy's sake. We really need to get past the "fat jet wrapped in even bigger explosives" stage.
- thedogfatherx, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8Now that is sexy. What is the water spraying for?
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8Dust control.....I'm sure that the diesel engines under the platform kick up some dust.....not that dust will effect the shuttle, but the workers
- JasonCox, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7Water. It keeps the dust down.

- muleskinner, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6I wonder what got photoshopped out in the middle of that picture.....
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/06/2008, -1/+7Cool picture. I didn't realize they sprayed down the dirt track in front of the crawler, but apparently they do.

[Q:] It's no surprise that the people who work on the [Hubble Space Telescope] project have a great affection for it, but Hubble has really become an icon outside of the science community. Why is it that it's got such a special place in, in the hearts of everyone?
[A:] I think their Wide Field Camera 1, then we had 2 and hopefully we'll put 3 in, brought some of the most beautiful images we've ever seen of the universe. I think that caught the public's attention. The fact that it has spectrographs on it and it gets the chemical composition of the universe for the astronomers is sort of a combination of you can get the public involved because you can show them these pictures, you can get the astronomy, the science community involved, and it marries the two of those together, and it's just phenomenal. It's been a great payoff. - ulmanor, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5"Beam me up, Scotty."
- reticulate, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5Best stupid comment I've seen in weeks.
Thanks for the laugh. - JasonCox, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5Water droplet on the camera.
- rl41, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6Stupid Freud, now everything looks phallic...
- CATSCEO2, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5...the *****?
- bradleyland, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4The path that the crawler-transporter (the vehicle that moves the shuttle to the pad) isn't paved, it's a kind of shell-filled dirt. Wetting it helps increase it's durability and keeps down on dust.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4Yes, as this won't take off until October 10.
- Dylson, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5Cool picture. I would love to see one of those things launch in person. Or, even better, be on board.

- DoscoJones, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3There's an episode of Dirty Jobs that shows quite a bit about the crawler. Check it out.
- Komodork, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3there will be another sweet pic coming soon. As the launch date closes in, both Atlantis and Endeavour will be on each launch pad.
tour guide said in case something goes wrong, Endeavour would launch to rescue the Atlantis crew. - woodsja, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3If by phallic you mean aerodynamic then probably. An engineer's gender has little to do with their decision to pick maximally efficient designs... You might want to go get checked out if all you see is a phallus when you look at planes, trains, and rockets...
- Trevour, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3That bumper sticker on the back says "My other shuttle is the Millennium Falcon"
- Thogster, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3My tour guide said it travelled at 1 mph when it was fully loaded, and 2 mph when it wasn't.
