- DharmaTurtle, on 03/14/2008, -1/+13Official trailer/teaser of Google Sky (Not a rickroll):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX9MeF2Au9c- 3amboo, on 03/15/2008, -0/+5dugg for the "not a rickroll" disclaimer. we need more people like you
- jemka, on 03/15/2008, -3/+1"you can even see the astronaut's footprints."
But can't see The Lander's even though weighed 17 tons and sat on top of the sand making no impression. FAKE.- turpenine, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1you can see the lander from earth douchebag.
- DharmaTurtle, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1yes, NASA spent millions of dollars faking a moon landing and includes small details like footprints only to forget to put in the moonlander's tracks.
...or maybe you're not looking in the right direction.
- twertyto, on 03/14/2008, -3/+18Sorry for comment abuse but there already exists a similar system. It's called SkyView
http://skyview.gsfc.nasa.gov/
It has a better resolution and you can see the sky in other wavelengths. Select Non-astronomers page.- franklymister, on 03/14/2008, -3/+10Oh, well since a more technical, less intuitive, lesser-known application already exists, what the hell is Google doing releasing Google Sky?
Sorry, guys, shut it down - tell everyone to download the SkyView Jar (make sure they have the latest version of Java), and use simple controls like typing [ java -jar skyview.jar survey=dss position=3c273 ] when you want to see something. What was anyone ever thinking with this Google Sky thing? Clearly a mistake, sorry!- phenom2k7, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2There's the problem. I don't really want to download and install more crap, especially Java.
Anyhow, this is quite important considering Google's moon mission. Where from memory they intend getting HD resolution pics/videos of all the Apollo landing sites, the equipment left etc. Which will be accessible I guess from Google Sky. I'll think it'll be interesting getting a new/different perspective of the moon landing missions.- EllimistX, on 03/15/2008, -0/+3Whoosh!
- twertyto, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1First off, relax.
Second, you don't have to download anything to use SkyView. It's all web based. Why are you using a downloadable, command line based app version of this? Unnecessary.
Third, I told people to select the non-astronomers page. It's not very technical and is run by people who do astronomy for a living.
- phenom2k7, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2There's the problem. I don't really want to download and install more crap, especially Java.
- franklymister, on 03/14/2008, -3/+10Oh, well since a more technical, less intuitive, lesser-known application already exists, what the hell is Google doing releasing Google Sky?
- MxM111, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Just for fun, compare the angular size of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) with the Moon size...
- db0255, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3That's not fun.
- Flayum, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2It's more fun than a barrel full of asteroids!

- XristosAnesti, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1This just in: Google decided taking over the world was too easy. They're now going for the whole freaking universe.
- apochcrypha, on 03/15/2008, -0/+0This is useless to me unless it can zoom up Counselor Deanna Troi's skirt
- the999, on 03/15/2008, -1/+1I'm pulling mine out and polishing it. Ahem.
- DharmaTurtle, on 03/14/2008, -1/+13Official trailer/teaser of Google Sky (Not a rickroll):
- listrophy, on 03/14/2008, -4/+630_o And I thought Google Maps zoomed in. Daaamn.
Zoom all the way out, then pick a spot and zoom in. Repeat ad nauseum.- ItsMyWii, on 03/14/2008, -11/+7Why would you want to repeat something until you're nauseous?
- kidcodea, on 03/14/2008, -2/+17emo
- SSUK, on 03/14/2008, -2/+17Have you tried spinning around on an office chair? It's fun.
- MrSidnet, on 03/14/2008, -1/+22People do that with alcohol all the time.
- Angostura, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4Someone needs to learn a little latin.

- twertyto, on 03/14/2008, -2/+33I seriously thought before I clicked on the story that this would be an Onion article. Google sky would be 1000s of blue sky images with an occational cloud.

- whitezombie420, on 03/14/2008, -2/+1HA!
- carlosglz, on 03/14/2008, -1/+3Here's a cool trick if you are on a macbook... you can pinch with your fingers to zoom in and out...
- CoolWind, on 03/15/2008, -0/+3Is that easier?
- phatvolvo, on 03/15/2008, -1/+8Were these photos taken by spy planes flying upside down?

- koick, on 03/14/2008, -2/+1?
- sickoo, on 03/14/2008, -83/+6The Worst and the First Google Product Ever. You zoom in/out a 2d image and call it; google.com/sky/ ? Mars is also same.
- khail250, on 03/14/2008, -3/+10zoom out? not really, google doesn't have satellites that zoom from the center of the milky way, technically they are still zooming in
- ZionicIon, on 03/14/2008, -5/+37What were you expecting? Did you think google would have the entire milky way mapped in 3D?
- revjustin2, on 03/14/2008, -2/+11You mean they can't do this?!
- kidcodea, on 03/14/2008, -5/+18they cant even upgrade fukin youtube quality to at very least 720p...
- Kraemahz, on 03/14/2008, -1/+3Do you have any idea how much storage millions of 720p videos would require? And the server farms that would need to access that just to get it to you at a reasonable rate?
- kidcodea, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1about the same as vimeo or stage6 or whatever and they promissed to have it in 3 months back oct/nov
- reiner15, on 03/15/2008, -2/+1Not to mention all the grandparents, aunts and uncles, parents that are still using 1024x768 that sit and watch "funny videos" all day. It wouldn't even fit on their screen. That plus I don't want rickroll in Hi Def.
- BFisch06, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5Google Sky 2.0!!!
- revjustin2, on 03/14/2008, -2/+11You mean they can't do this?!
- osuchasenuts, on 03/14/2008, -8/+4Yeah, they're Google.
- MrNexus, on 03/14/2008, -3/+9That is no intelligent life on Digg.
- reiner15, on 03/15/2008, -0/+3couldn't have said it better myself.
- CoolWind, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Ironic, isn't it?
- reiner15, on 03/15/2008, -0/+3couldn't have said it better myself.
- voodoogork, on 03/14/2008, -11/+3I agree. The planets look like cutouts from a kindergarten project. I mean damn, all it is is a ***** picture of yellow dots with that you can barely zoom in on. I hate google.
- XristosAnesti, on 03/15/2008, -2/+3Damn right. Google needs to make us a more visually pleasing universe to look at. I'm sick of version 1.0 with its stupid little dots all over the sky.
- sickoo, on 03/14/2008, -99/+5The First Worst Google Product Ever. You zoom in/out a 2d image and call it; google.com/sky/ ? Mars is also same.

- GibitStylin, on 03/14/2008, -4/+8i bet this ones more reliable...
- masfenix, on 03/14/2008, -8/+193Is it just me, or is filled with bugs? (computer programming glitches, not real bugs)
- HCviolence, on 03/14/2008, -13/+91One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new insect overlords
- alenox, on 03/14/2008, -4/+3they can't be worse than bush
- Syric, on 03/15/2008, -1/+2I meant to Digg you, I swear.

I'm the Queen.
No you're not. - samgab, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Where's Ender Wiggin when you need him?

- ZigVicious, on 03/14/2008, -3/+4He's not there.
- spacewhale, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2Dammit! Both of you beat me to it!
- mickstephenson, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Yeah I was surprised no one had done it already, A little disappointing to see that people aren't sick and tired of having Kent Brockman rammed down our throats in every comments thread tho.
- Klarth, on 03/14/2008, -1/+8My God!
- yojiffyskippy, on 03/14/2008, -3/+11Glitches?!?!?! ... or rips in the space-time continuum?
- subliminalurge, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Just zap it with an inverse polaron beam, and it'll be fine. Of course, that will require modifications to your deflector dish. Kind of a pain in the ass, but well worth it.
- Sornos, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Inverse Tachyon beam, you fool! You'll only widen it with a polaron beam!
- subliminalurge, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1I guess the destruction of the universe is on my head. Sorry guys.
- Sornos, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Inverse Tachyon beam, you fool! You'll only widen it with a polaron beam!

- Daniel591992, on 03/14/2008, -4/+12Did they forget to hire a designer?
- patthew, on 03/14/2008, -1/+6They should have sent a poet.
- ktsai, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0dugg for the "Contact" comment...."no words..no words"
- davidrools, on 03/14/2008, -2/+14an intelligent designer, perhaps?
- Daniel591992, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1or just any designer...
- patthew, on 03/14/2008, -1/+6They should have sent a poet.
- jpetrides, on 03/14/2008, -1/+12yeah, it really sucks. Google is no longer a silicon valley startup - they are a market leader, so I'm surprised that they let this crap get out. I can't zoom in anywhere without one of the boxes being dead. It's incredibly buggy on my 'puter.
- Fxer, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4Ditto.
- MadEnvoy, on 03/14/2008, -4/+3Then use a computer instead of your vajayjay.
- adventchild08, on 03/14/2008, -1/+3What?
- MadEnvoy, on 03/14/2008, -4/+3Then use a computer instead of your vajayjay.
- Fxer, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4Ditto.
- ElbertF, on 03/14/2008, -1/+8I had more fun exploring glitches then stars.
- djepik, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2*than. Sorry
- samgab, on 03/15/2008, -0/+3No, he was saying which order he enjoyed exploring in. First glitches, then stars.
- djepik, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2*than. Sorry
- Silverbluenote, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6you mean buggers ? no worries. Ender wiggin will save us all.
- someuser90, on 03/14/2008, -0/+7i found waldo
- benbfree, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1It's possible that their CDN hasn't fully replicated the data yet. Although that would be surprising.
- disappointed, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Check out this giant space gun I found http://www.google.com/sky/#latitude=41.13729606112 ...

- Deist4Life, on 03/15/2008, -1/+1This has got to be a new height of stupidity for Google, and the design sucks!. Interface is terrible. Did they have Microsoft support for creating this crap?
- HCviolence, on 03/14/2008, -13/+91One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new insect overlords
- MrB398, on 03/14/2008, -13/+19It appears everyone is about 6 months behind. This has been out a while I tihnk
- huntermaclean, on 03/14/2008, -9/+4I agree MrB398. If you have Google Earth, can't you just flick a switch and change it to astronomy mode?
- MellerTime, on 03/14/2008, -1/+18That's the point - this isn't Google Earth, this is Google Maps. No software download required...
- elbowman, on 03/14/2008, -6/+1I've had the capability for at least 6 months. Old news.
- revjustin2, on 03/14/2008, -2/+7Well, if elbowman's had it for 6 months then it MUST be old news.
- zongamin, on 03/14/2008, -3/+11On google earth yes, not in your web browser you cretin.
- Freps, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1This is referring to Google Sky without Google Earth
- lintmonkey, on 03/14/2008, -4/+3But without earth, there is no sky.
- TheMightyFruit, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Earth gets blown up while i am standing on mars, there is still a sky.
- XristosAnesti, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2The cake is a lie.
- damentz, on 03/14/2008, -2/+1owned
- lintmonkey, on 03/14/2008, -4/+3But without earth, there is no sky.
- huntermaclean, on 03/14/2008, -9/+4I agree MrB398. If you have Google Earth, can't you just flick a switch and change it to astronomy mode?
- scott12087, on 03/14/2008, -3/+289If you select solar system and then click on Earth, it takes you to Google Maps. How is this supposed to help me find Earth in my telescope? Stupid Google!
- GreenChaos, on 03/14/2008, -2/+8I'm so daft I totally didn't expect that.
- SysstemLord, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5Why doesn't it take to Google Moon and Google Mars when you click on them:
http://www.google.com/moon/
http://www.google.com/mars/ - TheMidnight, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2Put a mirror in front of it.
- jbellny, on 03/14/2008, -8/+34Truly an embarrassing effort when compared to what I've seen of the WorldWide Telescope.
- malykii, on 03/14/2008, -2/+4True
- Ksg89, on 03/14/2008, -6/+3Rather not install SilverLight thanks
- jhaks, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5Why? I want to understand this sentiment.
Also I don't think WorldWide Telescope runs on Silverlight. What the video and you see it doesn't run in a browser. It looks like a stand alone app and Wikipedia says it is written in .Net- HalFTW, on 03/15/2008, -1/+3Silverlight = more unnecessary proprietary crap.
- dajernts, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2Why? It installs quicker than Flash.
- jhaks, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5Why? I want to understand this sentiment.

- formergthing, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Use Google Earth, this new web-based thing is a dumbed down version of what has already been available in earth for some time.
- cpbrown, on 03/14/2008, -1/+1except google sky exists atm whereas microsoft labs stuff has yet to enter the marketing and reduction-in-functionality stage of development at microsoft
- Dongvid, on 03/14/2008, -3/+13There's no directions on it? Damn, now I really wish I got the GPS in my flying car.
- ddfall, on 03/14/2008, -7/+8Ah, Google Moon is always fun too. Zoom in all of the way. ;)
http://maps.google.com/moon/index.html- SSUK, on 03/14/2008, -1/+13It's no longer cheese. Shame, it was rather funny.
- XristosAnesti, on 03/15/2008, -2/+1Wow, they're going overboard trying to fake that moon landing these days! Look, fake astronaut footprints!
Pretty sure that whole moon program was made in California, not in outer space.- specialK16, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1All my friends knew me as geek/idiot after I told them how hilarious it was Google Moon if you zoom all the way.
- LiquidIse, on 03/14/2008, -2/+40A google service not in beta? Shenanigans!
On a more serious note, this is going to be very cool.- DharmaTurtle, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2It should be in beta. Couple of bugs.
- XristosAnesti, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2Should be pre-alpha. Damn.
- DharmaTurtle, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2It should be in beta. Couple of bugs.

- DisposableRob, on 03/14/2008, -4/+25You get Goatse'd, instead.
- jacksplatter, on 03/14/2008, -6/+0If I ever become an astronaut, I hope to land on Uranus.
- vuke69, on 03/14/2008, -2/+14Asstronaut?
- Aazlain, on 03/14/2008, -3/+98The year 2620 can't come soon enough…
Fry: "Hey, as long as you don't make me smell Uranus." *laughs*
Leela: "I don't get it."
Professor: "I'm sorry, Fry, but astronomers renamed Uranus in 2620 to end that stupid joke once and for all."
Fry: "Oh. What's it called now?"
Professor: "Urectum.
- Aeuta, on 03/14/2008, -2/+16There is a Open Source program that does it better. You can even view the sky as it is right now (http://sourceforge.net/projects/stellarium). But again that requires a download...good job Google

- acatzr800, on 03/14/2008, -0/+81umm no dude its clearly a rectangular nebula
- MindStalker, on 03/14/2008, -3/+4Hell? Yea, if there was a hell, that would probably be it.
Google Maps has patches of high detail like that, its pretty common. But awesome to see hell is such detail.. - username7D8, on 03/14/2008, -2/+11Its the Borg cube, resistance if futile!

oh, this is going to be a difficult one...- MasterRex, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1I'll give you a hint- he's been watching me masturbate. ='(
- flashman2006, on 03/14/2008, -2/+2That's not a true color image of a nebula right? If we look at that with our naked eye would we really see that? Isn't it just supposed to be a bunch of gas which is transparent.
- jamesdew, on 03/14/2008, -4/+0I appear to have identified an alien craft
http://www.google.com/sky/#latitude=-59.6247140931 ... - gamempire, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Thats an image shot by the Hubble Space Telescope of the Carina Nebula. The star in there, Eta Carina, is one of the most massive and luminous stars in our galaxy. Its also 7500 light years away, and could go supernova any momment (it probably has, but the light hasn't reached us yet). Also, if its angled the proper direction, you can kiss Earth goodbye. Massive gamma ray burst from supernova directed at Earth is 1 in 100,000 shot (yes, actually that low), and it would just flashfry the entire side of the planet it hits. Extra crispy.

- thatfunman, on 03/14/2008, -6/+6This is great and all, but for the people who own or have access to high power telescopes, this does no justice.
- revjustin2, on 03/14/2008, -2/+12All 6 of you.
- yojiffyskippy, on 03/14/2008, -1/+6I'm just guessing but this is probably for those that DON'T have high power telescopes. Ya think?
- neognostic, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3What the heck made you choose that user name? Talk about a wet blanket.
- subliminalurge, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6That's like saying that for people who actually have sex with supermodels, jerking off to playboy just doesn't compare.
Thank you Captain Obvious.- XristosAnesti, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Coming soon: Google Porn - pan, zoom, and search naked women, including the ability to make and watch tours!
- Fubeman, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1And for those of us that have been to outer space, it's just a big letdown -yeah, I agree. Excuse me while I go take the dog out for a space walk.

- Silverbluenote, on 03/14/2008, -1/+4since noone really knows what is the true size of the universe - there's no way to answer that question.
- Uranium118, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3"there's no way to answer that question" That's the answer?
- TheMightyFruit, on 03/14/2008, -1/+4No, the answer is 42.

- vsmak, on 03/14/2008, -1/+23Pluto lives!
- dafragsta, on 03/14/2008, -5/+4I saw an AWESOME demo at SXSW that used an inflatable projector screen with a curved display area (the projector was pushing a fish-eye lens image, which was flattened out on the curved surface) and the guy demoing it was piloting a SWEET universal navigation system based on a crapload of telescopic imagery from NASA and other sources. It showed the effects of our time delay looking outward on the universe. It kinda made me think the Big Bang was an illusion, because with an infinitely powerful telescope, you'd definitely see a evolutionary ladder of the universe's development, the further out you look.
- ehelbush, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2One time at science camp.........
- dafragsta, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1http://www.sxsw.com/
Not a science camp. It's a music/film/interactive festival. I saw Billy Bob Thornton playing at the Dell lounge, which is pretty much an exhibit booth. That was surreal too. Oh yeah, and Kevin Rose sat next to me as I was taking the crap out of the schwag bag. That was pretty cool too.

- swizzcheez, on 03/14/2008, -1/+16celestia is still my favorite on this stuff... http://www.shatters.net/celestia/
- Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 03/14/2008, -3/+15Hopefully this will help people wake up to the fact that we need to support space exploration.
- revjustin2, on 03/14/2008, -2/+11I hope this will help people wake up to a steaming plate of waffles.
- DJSPin047, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2Waffles recently endorsed Ron Paul.
- revjustin2, on 03/14/2008, -2/+11I hope this will help people wake up to a steaming plate of waffles.
- gr00vy, on 03/14/2008, -6/+8I zoomed in real close to this one place, and there was this short green guy with antennas... Walking out of what looked like a porno theater.
- Sunscreen, on 03/14/2008, -3/+10I'd rather see Google Ground so I can explore Hell. They have that tech, don't they?
- scamper22, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4violating the privacy of dick cheney is not allowed
- zbrojovka, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Sure it is, it's for homeland security purposes.

- raid517, on 03/14/2008, -2/+4So I can't just type in my post/zip code and see the sky from where I am? This would be a very useful teaching/astronomy aid.
- vuke69, on 03/14/2008, -1/+3These are probably more along the lines of what you are looking for:

http://www.shatters.net/celestia/ - damnitdaniel, on 03/14/2008, -3/+3Or you could get you're lazy ass off the computer, out of your mom's basement, and go outside.
- Sorry, that was kinda harsh.- latrosicarius, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2Harsh, but well worth it.
The "your momma's basement" comments are quite necessary.
- latrosicarius, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2Harsh, but well worth it.
- n88n, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1check out Stellarium. It allows you to type in your lat/long and it gives you the sky as it should be based off of your computer clock. I love this program and it has helped me a ton learning the sky and it's objects.
http://www.stellarium.org/
runs on Win, Mac and Linux.

- aaronbrannt, on 03/14/2008, -3/+3This isn't as smooth as Google Earth's sky segment, and appears to have lower resolution and zooming capabilities.
- MagnumVP, on 03/14/2008, -4/+27Kudos to still having Pluto as a planet.
- guyincognitoo, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1What about that planet they think is out there?

-------------------------- BMNB1tches, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1this is the web version, which was released recently
- hadak, on 03/14/2008, -2/+22This doesn't "feel" like a Google product. It's missing tiles, and isn't nearly as refined as Google Maps.
- dajernts, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2That's always the feeling I get from Google services. Don't get me wrong, Google is excellent, in my opinion, at search and that's what I focus on with them but I feel like they could clean up a lot of their other services.
- rhinofinger, on 03/15/2008, -0/+0Cut them some slack here, all they have to work with is NASA's hubble data. This was made out of an agreement with NASA a few years back to archive their data in a searchable way, and they've done that. That it's pretty entertaining is just a plus.
- payload74, on 03/14/2008, -8/+2Google Sky was released in 2007....like around August 2007...WTF?

- SSUK, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Looks like it's more of a break in the clouds.
- gamempire, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Again, its not a black hole. Its the Carina Nebula. You can see the star, Eta Carina, here: http://www.google.com/sky/#latitude=-59.6845544836 ... . It could go supernova any momment :) Its also pretty close by.
- twertyto, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2For the sake of the people you encounter in life, I hope that was a joke.
- xlar54, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Its a Nebula Asshole.
