how about cellphones, satellite tv, gps, google maps/earth, teflon, medical imaging, smoke detectors, scratch resistant glass, joysticks! all would not exist were it not for the space program - EssPii, on 11/30/2008, -0/+4LOL... engaging in dialogue = name calling, swearing and bring into question posters intelligence....
Nope, no trolls here.

Have your heard of something called the ISS? - ATLiens, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4well since its long been thought of that the earth was the only planet that has any life, finding any sort of life form on a planet/moon would be a huge discovery. i think you're missing the point.

- linkmandx, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3I live in a town where you can't smell a thing...
- forgiste, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3Clearly global warming is a combined effort of the sun getting hotter and greenhouse gases. How can anyone possibly deny this? Mars's ice caps are getting smaller, and CO2 has been proven to trap infrared light. We can't cool the sun, but we can do something about greenhouse gases. Look at Venus, it's farther from the sun than Mercury, yet it's way hotter, because it's atmosphere is chock full of greenhouse gases. Not that any of this has anything to do with Saturn or Enceladus.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3I think what they would be looking for are extremeophiles.

- wunksta, on 11/30/2008, -1/+4freezing water is actually a good indication of life. it freezes from the top allowing any living matter to survive underneath. most other liquids dont do that.
the formation of geysers is another excellent indication as it shows there must be some type of force and thereby an energy source that could be used as food. - pln2bz, on 11/30/2008, -1/+3Enceladus is being electrically machined. The people at JPL are apparently oblivious ...

- alex7575, on 11/30/2008, -2/+4That's one ***** up by a Liberal, should I start posting links of stupid ***** Conservatives say and do?
Between Palin and Bush you won't have enough time in your life to go through them all.
Also, this is about Science not Politics. But then again the Right wing seems to be averted to Science anyway.
PS: That link is to an Alex Jones interview, the guy Jones is interviewing does ***** up by saying that those planets are closer. My guess is that he didn't even know why the ice on those planets is melting, but my point remains. ALEX JONES?!?! Are you ***** kidding me? - Velocity14, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2But... but... we're still flipping ***** over things we're finding on Mars... I don't think we're ready for this yet.

- AikoMiko, on 11/30/2008, -1/+3Let's try knocking it out of orbit with a nuke. If we can get it in a decent orbit we can thaw it into a beach planet. Or wreck it into earth and kill everyone, either way I'm cool with it.

- alex7575, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1"We don't need to control the sun either. It controls itself. The sun entered a new solar cycle around December 23, 2007. It is now entering a new "low period."
Solar cycles have NOTHING to do with it getting "warmer" or "hotter" its influence is negligible.

"And with Venus and Mercury, one must also determine whether atmosphere or mass is more important in the creation of heat. Venus has far more mass than Mercury and as a result may maintain/radiate more heat."
So why isn't the Earth, which is pretty much the same size as Venus not even close to be as hot as Venus? And I think you're talking volume not mas, also both Earth and Venus have atmospheres, the difference? Venus' atmosphere is composed of 96% CO2 and the Earth has 0.0384% Co2 in its atmosphere.
"Ignore the politics and trust the science.", what science are you talking about, because it seems we believe in 2 different kinds of science. - jgubbe, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1How does a planet get electrically machined by natural forces but we have an energy problem? I'd say the Enceladians are bogarting it all.
- alex7575, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2I had no idea who that guy was, and haven't read his book. And I strongly believe that we have a huge part on Global warming.
So you discredit the whole theory because one proponent said something stupid? Listen to the interview, he quickly changes the subject when he realizes that he said something stupid, he just didn't have any idea about why the ice on other planet was melting.
You are being fed FUD just like the proponents of Global warming are (as you claim) - cughin, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1i tried and failed
- Jarasmen, on 12/01/2008, -1/+2Does everything need to be with an ASCII?
- erkokite, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2The hydrogen bonds in water molecules play a very important part in the chemistry of living systems. Other molecules have these bonds of course, but they are particularly strong in water. In addition water is a simple molecule, and very common, so it is quite possible that it plays an important role in any possible extraterrestrial life.
- gnotDigger, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1I honestly don't see why you're getting dugg down.... Too many optimists here obviously.
- Peekman, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1The ISS and robots moving on another planet seem like results to me....
- Clbull, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2No ASCII of the Professor?
- alex7575, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1"I'm trying to hammer in that head of yours that the reason Venus is so hot is because its atmosphere consists of 96% of a greenhouse gas, Earth is not as hot because it only has an insignificant amount of those greenhouse gases. Once the level of CO2 increases, no matter which atmosphere you're talking about, it will cause it to trap heat (as we see happening on Venus), and it DOESN'T MATTER WHICH PLANET WE'RE TALKING ABOUT. If said planet has an increase of the amount of greenhouse gases in its atmosphere, the temperature WILL increase."
And for what is worth, I DO apologize for being so rude (I may STRONGLY disagree with your point of view, but I've been much less of a gentleman to you, than you were to me) - Peekman, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1This article is about global warming??
- alex7575, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Wow, you're the one who brought up the difference in temperature to be a cause of a difference of mass not atmosphere, now you're using the opposite argument to support yours???
"And with Venus and Mercury, one must also determine whether atmosphere or mass is more important in the creation of heat. Venus has far more mass than Mercury and as a result may maintain/radiate more heat." - thealsir, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1An actual rare appropriate use of all caps. Bravo.
- alex7575, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1The only reason I keep answering you, is because it's beyond me why you feel the need to keep going when you obviously have no idea of what you're talking about.
You still haven't explained to me, why you're using two opposite arguments to support your beliefs.
Also didn't get an answer on how you claim that the solar cycles have anything to do with temperatures on our planet.
All you do is poke holes and distort what I say.
You obviously don't give a ***** about the truth, and have some kinda stupid agenda.
Your profile says you're 67, if that's true, I'm the last person to disrespect someone who's lived twice as much as I have. But at the same time, I CANNOT respect a person who's trying to pass his own convictions as undeniable truth when he CAN'T support any of his claims. All you are doing is trying to dissect my arguments and attack their semantics.
I'm sorry I wasted all this time trying to convince you that you're being fed FUD, when you obviously don't care what the truth is. - alex7575, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1"You're trying to say that Venus is hotter than Earth because it has a similar atmosphere that is instead mostly carbon dioxide."
How can both atmospheres be similar when I specifically pointed out that 96% of it is CO2 when Earth's is less than 1%?!?! How many times do I have to repeat myself that I'm using Venus as an example of what greenhouse gases can do to a planet. I'm not comparing both atmospheres.
Do you have any idea of how greenhouses work?!? Can't you draw conclusions from that? It doesn't take a doctorate to see it.
I'm trying to hammer in that head of yours that the reason Venus is so hot is because its atmosphere consists of 96% of a greenhouse gas, Earth is not as hot because it only has an insignificant amount of those greenhouse gases. Once the level of CO2 increases, no matter which atmosphere you're talking about, it will cause it to trap heat (as we see happening on Venus), and it DOESN'T MATTER WHICH PLANET WE'RE TALKING ABOUT. If said planet has an increase of the amount of greenhouse gases in its atmosphere, the temperature WILL increase.
If you draw your own conclusions, then you should stop.
Jebus Christ. - alex7575, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Who is "drawing parallels"? I'm trying to explain cause and effect, Venus is a perfect (extreme) example of what an imbalanced atmosphere can do to its environment. And you're denying that CO2 can cause global warming.
Do some research before spouting your propaganda (as you obviously can't support your own claims.), and learn to draw your own conclusions. - spomoni123, on 04/12/2009, -0/+0http://pochilum.com.ua
- ZER0JACK, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1"...bad news".
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1What's wrong with a warmer Earth?
Warm periods are directly tied to times of prosperity and abundance.
We don't need to control the sun either. It controls itself. The sun entered a new solar cycle around December 23, 2007. It is now entering a new "low period."
Which explains why Michigan (where I live) has been covered with snow for the last month when we usually don't see a ground covering of snow until January.
And with Venus and Mercury, one must also determine whether atmosphere or mass is more important in the creation of heat. Venus has far more mass than Mercury and as a result may maintain/radiate more heat. - corr1756, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1dugg for the expectation of seeing a guy running around yelling "I'm alive! I'm alive!'
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -2/+1"So you discredit the whole theory because one proponent said something stupid?"
Nope just trying to wake people up to the truth.
Ignore the politics and trust the science.
http://www.garagetv.be/video-galerij/blancostemrec ... - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -1/+0This is you:
"So why isn't the Earth, which is pretty much the same size as Venus not even close to be as hot as Venus? And I think you're talking volume not mas, also both Earth and Venus have atmospheres, the difference? Venus' atmosphere is composed of 96% CO2 and the Earth has 0.0384% Co2 in its atmosphere."
You're trying to say that Venus is hotter than Earth because it has a similar atmosphere that is instead mostly carbon dioxide.
You're comparing apples to oranges.
I stated the ice in Saturn's rings is melting as a result of solar radiation. One of the idiots that believes in man-made global warming attributes that fact to Saturn being closer to the sun. If you listen to his interview, you'll realize he's completely ignorant and has only been told what to believe.
I draw my own conclusions. You should give it a try. - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -1/+0So an atmosphere on a planet that doesn't contain liquid water can be compared to our own?
Since you know the truth so well, why do so many people disagree? -
