- matthias00, on 09/12/2008, -0/+23Cool, now we can rickroll the entire galaxy.
- necbone, on 09/11/2008, -0/+22Yea....
- Topher06, on 09/11/2008, -3/+24Why does everybody assume aliens are more advanced then us? Maybe we haven't heard anything from SETI yet because the only other lifeforms out their are scaly stone-wielding creatures that just emerged from their caves yesterday and are a millennia away from enslaving us.
- nlight, on 09/12/2008, -0/+18Hmm.. interesting point. Maybe we're the nasty aliens destined to enslave the universe.
- DaemonNivas, on 09/12/2008, -0/+17Oh please, bury this back to Stone Age...
- Elderon, on 09/12/2008, -0/+16There are more stars and planets than anyone can possibly imagine. It stands to reason given the staggering amount of chances that there would be plenty of life out there more advanced then we are. Would also be likely that there are quite a few less advanced then we are.
- rheaume, on 09/12/2008, -0/+15I think sending Viagra ads to an alien race with no penises is an excellent idea
- Sub7, on 09/12/2008, -0/+11"somebody should look at the archives on these stars and see if there are any light variations of the kind they are describing," says physicist Freeman
Man the crowbars! - mrdoubles, on 09/12/2008, -1/+12"I Love You, Leela"
- buddamus, on 09/12/2008, -0/+11My star is only 56k, I wanna go supernova
- MacBookForMe, on 09/11/2008, -0/+8A kind of a galactic discotheque?
- nite23, on 09/12/2008, -0/+7Ping that measures in thousands of years? I won't complain about my ADSL latency ever again.
- sbostedor, on 09/12/2008, -1/+8This is very close to the dumbest thing I've ever read on Digg
- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6They can manipulate the stars to send messages but they can't send more than 180 bits per year?
- TheWhiteOtter, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5The reason is because of how old the universe is and how (relatively) young our civilization is. We havn't had the technology to be found for long (and is still difficult to find us now) so the chances are that if we find some other civ they'll be more advanced.
- splinter09, on 09/12/2008, -2/+7Cool, when that is set up I'll be able to buy stuff from Mars, how long do you think will take it to deliver? Argh! can you imagine Alien porn...... the milky way chat room, Hot young female alien looking for human nerd............
- jeevesatvic, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4And don't get me started on the ping times...
- Alex2, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Each twinkle is a bit of data.
- HyphySoul, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Tom Cruise might be able to get a hold of them easier than us
- jaksu, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3WOW will make billions if it goes intergalactic
- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Comcast is gonna start throttling Jupiter

- nlight, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2I'll man the tank, you man the crowbar.
- FolkTheory, on 09/12/2008, -1/+3But will this Series if Interconnected Stars run Crysis?
- graemebenstead, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2I truely, truely hope that our first encounter of extra terrestrial life is through intergalactic spam!
- IIIKrazyKiDDIII, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Gordon Freeman didn't man a tank but he did happen man a crowbar and ended up saving the world in the process... ... so far. ;)
- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -1/+3***** rediculous.
- Kuabarra, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Does nobody get the Futurama reference, or do ppl just not care?
- gkwillie, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Someone has been playing too much spore.
- Naidel, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2People, people. "Than" is used to indicate comparison, "then" to indicate time.
Please, have a look:
http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Than-and-Then - mdraconis, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2bah they probably have the alien version of Comcast.
- Literaturfan, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1I thought "Indepandance Day" and "Mission Impossible" are old-fashioned. But as you see, aliens seem to present a human primal fear...
- MtheoryX, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1By our powers combined...
- LeRenard, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1The latency is going to be a serious bitch..
- Mpwns, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1lol they know what kinds of tools you need to do this and how to do it, but yet at the same time we can't even make those tools or the tools to get to those types of stars. even if it was true we would have no clue what they are saying and if we think we did we are still wrong i saw sphere they can't fool me.
- Greg2k, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1What happened to that "Whale Internet" they mentioned on an episode of Captain Planet? I'm still waiting for it.
- rushjaycarr, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1If these "aliens" are technologically advanced enough to change the patterns of the stars, then WHY can't they just hop in a spacecraft and visit?
- thcobbs, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I wonder if that's what we discovered LSD for.
- ATLien74, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1It's called Drake's Equation, and it's pretty much a 100% chance mathematically speaking that there is intelligent life out there.
- gkiltz, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Again, that latency is going to be very limiting!
At the speed of light, ping times to Mars are around 15 minutes!!! NOT 15 SECONDS!! 15 MINUTES!!!!!!
We know that, if there is anything more than microbial life in our own solar system, it is either subterranean, or buried under kilometers of ice, in liquid. That puts it out of reach of any radio signals that can penetrate earth's atmosphere!
Even IF it is eventually established that there is some advanced life out there somewhere, it is so far away, that, if you set up a telescope on their planet, or in orbit around it, and that telescope had the resolution to see any details of earth, and establish that this was a suitable environment for life, what they would see is the Earth of ancient times. Likely well before the Roman Empire.
One thing you NEED to get clear about space: There's a lot of it!!! - sl33stak, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1I agree w/ all the comments about this being dumb. As stated above, latency is well, in the lightyears..duh. But the manipulation of planetary bodies is a theory that some leading theoretical physicist/visionaries see as an achievement of advanced races. Read some of Dr. Michio Kaku's books. He elaborates on this theory of advancement and it's pretty compelling.
- comradeTJH, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Is there already an RFC for this?
- cughin, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1it ends with the niblonians, or does it start with them ?
- asdf2000, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1it's dumb dude
- solid12345, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1That is one long game of minesweeper.
- sock2828, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1The scenario of there being no other advanced civilizations is incredibly unlikely.
- Arasaka, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1If this happens to be genuine:
Odds of discovering alien porn: high
Odds of discovering instant message saying "don't collide protons! trust us": moderate -
