- RadiatedAnt, on 02/01/2008, -2/+17Dugg for the word piebald.
- hydroplane, on 02/01/2008, -3/+11That's it. The rebels are there.
- RealmDown, on 02/01/2008, -2/+9That's easy to fix. Just convince Bush there is oil there.
- ConceptJunkie, on 02/01/2008, -1/+5When you realize how radically different a lot of these big grey rocks are it _is_ fascinating.
- eberts, on 02/01/2008, -0/+4Ya know, One-liners and Ron Paul aside, it's nice when story like this reaches front page. It restores my faith that Digg is still a cool place to stop by.
- sparf, on 02/01/2008, -1/+5I dislike puppies, sunny days, and progressive thinking. We should hang out!
Oh, and add The Beatles to that list. - CrazyDave303, on 02/01/2008, -0/+4Relative to what? We spend more -talking- about building roads, and -talking- about putting in stop lights ever year then these two mission combined. And this is only the crap civic politics cause as you say "money flushed straight down the *****"
Plus I'm not going to get in to all the spin-off technologies the space race has given us. But I'm sure the world would be a less happy place with out Tang! - str3ama, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3I don't think they're wasting money, I just want them to put greater priority on more man missions..hell I'd volunteer to go to space even if it meant that coming back to earth would never be a possibility..
- Orion682, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3Actually unmanned probes are very limited with the sorts of experiments they can do. Half the tech we use today originated from NASA, and especially from manned missions which are capable of doing prolonged experimentation and observation, unlike many probes which only have set purposes for a given task.
Also, NASA will get 17.3 billion dollars this year for funding... to put that into perspective, that's less that what 2 months in Iraq costs us right now... So don't get all upset over the money they're "wasting". At least that money gets spent here. - CrazyDave303, on 02/01/2008, -1/+4Because it's 100's (arguably 1000's) of time cheaper to send up unmanned probes. 100Billion dollar budget for space station so far, and all we can do with that is drink our own piss so far.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3Get off digg...
- Orion682, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3You and Katie Couric seriously need to do your research before opening your mouths... we spend more in Iraq in 2 months than NASA does all year.
- dsendecki, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Looks like a Starbucks.
- edwartica, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2I want to digg you up for indicating that nickelback sucks, but dammit, I can't get over you being an ass.
- xxTazxx, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Someone add a wiktionary definition link here, I'm too lazy.
- ConceptJunkie, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Awesome! I used these kinds of maps to make ray-traced planets, which I printed on sticker stock for one of my kids' rooms year ago. Now I have a new moon I can make. [Thinks about setting up the inkjet and how exorbitantly expensive ink has gotten.] Actually, I cheated with Saturn and just made it up entirely in POV. Also I used a fake map for Pluto. The stickers however look great and are still bright and colorful after something like 7 years. Ironically, it was a long time before I could find a good map of the Earth. Nowadays there's tons of stuff from MODIS, etc, but for some reason I couldn't find anything in 2001 and had to save Earth for later.
Hooray for astronomy! - Orion682, on 02/01/2008, -1/+3That's where the Monolith is
- sotloo, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2It's gray it's a rock what more do you want?, what color photos? NASA is all about black and white photos man
- CrazyDave303, on 02/01/2008, -1/+3Counting that mars mission might cost $200billion (so it will end up really costing 500 billion or more) and that's ONLY a 2 year round trip, I say keep sending cheaper robots / unmanned probes.
Any one got clue how many years it would take to get to Saturn with todays technology? (no space odyssey 2001 type stuff) - Rapter09, on 02/01/2008, -1/+3Sadly, you'd be doing well by doing that. If they found oil or something they could limit the supply of and sell for foolish amounts of money, we'd have a fully populated Lunar Dubai within a year.
- sotloo, on 02/01/2008, -2/+4Another big gray rock from NASA, woohoo! Space exploration is so fascinating isn’t it?
- ConceptJunkie, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Cassini got there in about 6 years, but maybe you're talking about a manned mission. It might be too expensive in terms of power usage to get something 100x bigger there that fast, even with gravity assists.
- tringtring, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Is that a crater I can see on its surface, or am I imagining? Used to be a sci-fi buff, and am beginning to wonder what all our folks will know a hundred years hence
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+4Been there.
- itux1985, on 02/01/2008, -3/+4Good find man. What is that black Crater left of center on the top of the photo?
- BigBallistix, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1And yet managed to stay intact somehow. It might not have been a solid asteroid, but rather a ball of gas or something. According to the research lately, a much smaller scaled impact would own us quick-smart.
- DanHawking, on 02/01/2008, -1/+2My God, it's full of stars!
- XeNoGeAr78, on 02/01/2008, -1/+2IT'S A TRAP!
- enivid, on 02/01/2008, -1/+2Is that a 500 KM wide crater in the souther hemisphere? Seems like it had a huge hit relative to its total size.
- CrazyDave303, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Me wishes I paid more attention in physics class rather then trying to stare down the top of the teacher, and try to finish English home work (which I failed any way)
- Orion682, on 02/04/2008, -0/+1What the hell does Ron Paul ahve to do with anything. And I HAVE looked it up, so if you haven't, don't make up numbers.
- Aroundtheworls, on 02/01/2008, -2/+3The thumbnail looks a bit like a UFO flying over a forest.
Or maybe I've just had too many beers.... - CrazyDave303, on 02/01/2008, -1/+2I say we load up a DC-3 with a bunch of stars[sic] fly it out to Iapetus and dump them in one of the volcanoes up there.
- RealmDown, on 02/01/2008, -1/+2I would like to point out the deliberate lack of a sarcasm tag in my above post. :-)
- ConceptJunkie, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Well, you're lucky. I don't recall seeing anything about Nickelback.
- CrazyDave303, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1It will be long time before that a proven fact.
I'm not a rocket scientist, but there is lots of issues about assembling things in space. A big example is space walks are slow and dangerous. - edwartica, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Maybe if we stopped waging costly wars here on Earth, we might actually have the budget!
- ConceptJunkie, on 02/01/2008, -1/+22 months? Probably more like 2 weeks, but like Katie Couric, I haven't looked it up. If you're wearing your Ron Paul hat, this probably isn't something the Federal Government should be doing, but it's very useful science and probably the most interesting thing our government ever does.
- CrazyDave303, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1I can not say your wrong about manned missions, but I will claim there is a LOT of debate both ways about the effectiveness.
As much I am for the unmanned mission for the effectiveness for planetary science for science sake ( I know not as cool ), manned missions have WAY more effective technology spin offs for the real world. - TechGirl102, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1Right, I expected some more. At lease if we could view a larger image.
- brundlefly76, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1ˈpī-ˌbȯld - adjective
1: composed of incongruous parts
2: of different colors; especially : spotted or blotched with black and white - Impeller, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Would you mind telling us what is it like down there?
- edwartica, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1you might want to get some professional help for that problem.
- kaffein, on 02/01/2008, -1/+2Look at all those hexagonal craters... Every... Single... One... of them.

/tinfoilhat - edwartica, on 02/01/2008, -1/+1Besides, it would be a lot cheaper to launch a manned craft from a space station then from Earth. Of course you have to get the astronauts up there mind you, but....
- Rizzen, on 02/01/2008, -0/+0I... In a perhaps vain hope for humanity I'm digging you up for an amusing troll.
- aaron117, on 02/01/2008, -3/+3When can we go there?
- neocognitism, on 02/01/2008, -1/+1Does anyone have a simple app or tool to cast this pic onto a chosen perspective of a sphere? Because the low-res top and bottom correspond to the poles, am I right?
OSX pleez. - linksus, on 02/01/2008, -8/+8How do i add this to my GPS just incase i find myself lost?
- edwartica, on 02/01/2008, -1/+1Isn't that where the Watcher lives? No, that would be on our moon.
