First Lunar Foot Print [PIC]
apod.nasa.gov — On July 20th, 1969, a human first set foot on the Moon. Pictured above is the first lunar footprint. The footprint and distinction of the first person to walk on the Moon belong to Neil Armstrong.

- GorgarFanClub, on 03/12/2008, -70/+6Fake: The Lander weighed 17 tons and sat on top of the sand making no impression but directly next to it footprints can be seen in the sand.
- ZacT, on 03/12/2008, -1/+20And you know all this because you have been to the moon?
- doctechnical, on 03/12/2008, -0/+15He's certainly never been to Earth.
- tkotam, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2Can someone send GorgarFanClub the youtube link to the Iraq TV debate on whether the earth is round (or flat)? I think he can contribute to the discussion there.. :-)
- doctechnical, on 03/12/2008, -0/+15He's certainly never been to Earth.
- garryw, on 03/12/2008, -1/+21No impression? Did you snap a photo after the Lander left?
- judicar, on 03/12/2008, -1/+14What sand?
- tom2275, on 03/12/2008, -1/+19The lander made no impressions? Wow, how do you know that? been to the moon lately?
- foolawrence, on 03/12/2008, -3/+16Bah, you have all facts rong. Lunar lander weigh only 400 lbs. It sink in quicksand in moon, have to be pulled out by tractor. Then to be safe, they use helicoptor to hover so it not sink again. Astronauts forget to take picture because of big moon orgy going on.
- petermac99, on 03/12/2008, -1/+26No Impression? You know that the base of the lander never left right? It's legs are still sitting there so you'd never be able to see an impression since it was never pulled out of that sand to leave one!
- jdmcadam, on 03/12/2008, -0/+12This just in: image magically hides things which were not in frame at time of picture!
- jemka, on 03/12/2008, -0/+19"sand" ?
You mean cheese. - macweirdo42, on 03/12/2008, -0/+10I know for a fact that no human being has ever been to the Moon. I was there, I think I'd notice.
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3You must have just missed them, I passed them going the other way on my way to Mars.
- macweirdo42, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2Great... Just great... Now the Moon's just gonna become another tourist hellhole.
- thesoprano, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1We're whalers on the moon!

- PorchSong, on 03/12/2008, -2/+17You have to be the biggest tard ever. I bet you believe in 'chem trails' too (newest tinfoil hat theory that thinks the ice crystals airplane at high altitude leave behind them is actually the Bush administration chemically spraying the atmosphere--no *****, google it). Why you conspiracy nuts deny or overlook all the facts astounds me. Do you have any idea of the number of people who were directly involved with the space program and lunar landing who would have to be 'silent' if it was faked? Spitzer gets caught in a prostitution ring and it is all you hear about, yet no one, I repeat NO ONE directly involved with the lunar landing--that would mean people numbering in the HUNDREDS--have ever come out to say it was faked. No death bed confessions, etc. You tools hang you hats on the weakest theories that can not be proven, but immediately dismiss facts that can.
Get a life, losers. Stop spewing ignorance so the other stupid people walking around give you some attention.- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3You're wrong. Chemtrails aren't a new tinfoil hat theory. They've been worrying about contrails being spiked since the 40s!
The rest of what you say is 100% correct.- PorchSong, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3Shame on me. I guess I was late to that party. But you got to love how they blame Bush for it. Even better is how Bush was able to convince the entire world to lay down chems in their contrails. Hell, he was able to accomplish this before he was born too. That is impressive.
- latinjones, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2Not to nit pick, but it serves your argument well. The amount of people working on the Apollo program at it's peak was in the HUNDRED THOUSANDS. Almost 400,000 people involved.
- Hacbarton, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Carl Sagan use to talk about this; the idea of "pseudoskepticism". People attach on to a theory different than the mainstream to appear they are smarter and have a leg up, but in doing so they reject any knew knowledge. Sounds like the behavior of the Catholic Church.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3You're wrong. Chemtrails aren't a new tinfoil hat theory. They've been worrying about contrails being spiked since the 40s!

- ZacT, on 03/12/2008, -1/+20And you know all this because you have been to the moon?

- GoingToShibuya, on 03/12/2008, -5/+6Wait, is the footprint still there?
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 03/12/2008, -2/+18No wind.
- airburst, on 03/12/2008, -1/+8It will be there long enough to be an attraction at the first moon amusement park.
- kingvik, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1and for Fry to step on it.
- DoscoJones, on 03/12/2008, -0/+7It may not be. The blast from the launch was hard enough to knock over the flag (watch the video to see for yourself). if the blast was strong enough to do that, it is possible the footprint got covered over.
No way to know for sure until we go back and look. And put the flag back up.- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2Well remember there were other landings after this one.
- nthpro, on 03/12/2008, -18/+10But Fox told me that the lunar landing was faked! Who am I to believe if I can't believe Fox?
- VentHere, on 03/12/2008, -7/+3Your next best option is the government. Good luck!

- schmitey, on 03/12/2008, -3/+13Am I missing something? This is one of the most famous photographs of all time...unless you had your head stuck in the sand for the last nearly forty years everyone has probably seen it. So why is it on digg? I swear digg is just a competition to see if your submission will get to the front page...nothing has any real significance anymore! And if I see one more article about Clinton or Obama I'm going to stab myself through the ear with an icepick and submit it to digg as a last desperate act to get on the front page.
- nblsavage, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6Come on diggers - don't disappoint me. I really want to see his icepick trick!
- schmitey, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5It would work is the thing, rocket straight to the top with the headline "I told you so!" Now if I can just find a way to upload automatically from the camera to digg....I'm assuming death won't be instantaneous but I've never tried this before.

- gordo2323, on 03/12/2008, -3/+1Read once that was actually Aldrin's footprint
- Habemus, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1That it is. See my comment later on. It's not the "first" footprint, nor is it even Armstrong's footprint.
- michael43, on 03/12/2008, -0/+7Interesting how the government was able to transmit live pictures from the moon in 1969, while most people were still using party line phones. It makes you wonder what they can do now that we don't know about.
- DoscoJones, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2It wasn't rocket science, just a simple video signal. It used barely enough transmission signal strength to be picked up by the deep space tracking network antennae, like the ones at Goldstone and Parkes. TV from the moon is way cool to be sure, but in the end it was one of the easier things NASA pulled off for the Apollo project.

- blademanx, on 03/12/2008, -3/+5Cool picture, by why is it on digg?
- barc0de, on 03/12/2008, -8/+2No you see, what happened was, since the moon landing was faked, NASA had to send a special rover to the moon, and instead of tracks it had cut-out footprints. As the wheels went round new footprints were made.
It's so obvious you are all just sheeple, believing your government. - hpymondays, on 03/12/2008, -0/+8I suggest future moon missions to be financed by Nike/Reebok/Adidas. All NASA has to do is auction off the right to have their logo on the footprint and thus bring capitalism to the moon.

- Ell3, on 03/12/2008, -13/+3So there is obviously a layer of sand/dust on the moon. Yet numerous photos and videos of the lunar lander showed absolutely no dust whatsoever on the gleaming shiny metal surfaces. How is that possible? How could the module have landed without making a huge dust cloud? I'm not a conspiracy nut, but I can't think of any plausible explanation.
- enclaved, on 03/12/2008, -1/+11After reading your comment, only three words stood out.
'I can't think'
Thank you for being honest. - DoscoJones, on 03/12/2008, -0/+7It did kick up dust. You can see it in the landing video. Once the they'd landed there was nothing to kick up more dust except the astronauts themselves, and their suits and gear were coated in it. You can read all about it.
- kday, on 03/12/2008, -0/+7First of all, there is virtually no atmosphere on the moon. Therefore, there is no wind. When the lander kicks up dust, it will all fall right back to the surface of the moon. I'm sure there was some sort of "dust cloud" at the initial landing, but the cloud wouldn't exist for very long. Also, there is no reason much of the moon dust would stick to the lander. It's not like it's muddy on the moon. I'm sure the lander had some dust on it, but not enough to significantly cover the shiny metal surfaces.
That being said, there are some moon conspiracy theories that really just don't make sense to me. I think the one you mentioned is pretty easy to explain.- Ell3, on 03/13/2008, -2/+1The videos and photos are are very clear. There is absolutely no dust on the landers pods, or feet. Not even on the horizontal surfaces. That would be like a helicopter landing without kicking up any dust, it's not possible, given the thick layer of dust on the moon's surface.
- DoscoJones, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1You're wrong. Utterly and completely wrong. You are contradicted by all of the evidence.

- WoundedCow, on 03/12/2008, -4/+12For all you youngsters out there, let me tell you, us older folk were fascinated to the exclusion of almost all else as our astronauts walked on the moon. I recall spending hours on the floor in front of out 15" Zenith black and white watching Eric Severide detail the Mercury and Walt Cronkite the Apollo missions. (Until my dad kicked me in the head and told me to get my ass outside).
The USA took chances and three died in Apollo 1, but by God, we got our men to the moon and back and we strutted like no ones business.- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -7/+2so that 15 inch b&w zenith was like digg back then?

- jolifam77, on 03/12/2008, -16/+2Folks. It takes moisture to hold a footprint. There's no moisture on the moon. Try leaving a footprint in a dry sand dune. The moon landings were faked.
- DoscoJones, on 03/12/2008, -1/+9That's got to be the stupidest thing yet posted. Anyone can disprove this immediately using a sandbox and a vacuum chamber. If you were right then there'd be no craters or slide marks or anything. You're an idiot.
So until you've proven to yourself that you're full of crap, you can stfu.- jolifam77, on 03/12/2008, -6/+1uh craters are caused by asteroid collisions not people's shoes...
- DoscoJones, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6You're a complete loss. Most are not from "asteroids". Go get educated and leave the adult discussions to the adults.
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -3/+1Yeah but a dry sand dune can't hold a shape remember. The sand would just slide back in .
- DoscoJones, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3So what? That's not relevant. Different materials, different environment, different results.
- jolifam77, on 03/12/2008, -6/+1uh craters are caused by asteroid collisions not people's shoes...
- elint6, on 03/12/2008, -3/+6Take a hard rock surface, put some sand on it (~3-5 cms) and wear a boot, and step on it on the hottest day of the summer and/or the day with the lowest humidity. Then be surprised, and proceed to kill yourself because you were wrong.
- Wartz, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6its dust, not sand. Sand particles are far larger and heavier than dust particles.
- CATSCEO, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6STOP WASTING AIR!
- ChronicColonic, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1You need to buy a T-shirt from the Stanley Trendall Franklin University. Until you learn more, you need to attend S.T.F.U.

- DoscoJones, on 03/12/2008, -1/+9That's got to be the stupidest thing yet posted. Anyone can disprove this immediately using a sandbox and a vacuum chamber. If you were right then there'd be no craters or slide marks or anything. You're an idiot.

//Also: Pics, or it didn't happen - buenit, on 03/12/2008, -1/+6How does this make it to the front page?

- NewAgeFreak, on 03/12/2008, -12/+4Humans have never been on the moon. Sorry to break it to you guys. It would require critical thinking on your part to discover the truth on this though.
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5Go on... give us a hint.
- tomz17, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6Except that your statement is easily contradicted by thousands of pieces of evidence...

Sorry, I was thinking of how people like NewAgeFreak argue against everything, despite being proven wrong over and over again. That quote sounded like something he would have said back =)

- esquire360, on 03/12/2008, -2/+1i want to see high res pics of the luner rover flag and all that... why haven't they high res photoed the luner surface?
- latinjones, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1I believe there is a current japanese mission imaging the lunar surface but not at a resolution high enough to resolve the artifacts left behind. I think there is also a future NASA mission to the moon planned that would bring a satelite close enough to the surface to resolve the artifacts...Are you talking about doing this with the intent of uncovering the apollo artifacts left behind? Why bother when you have thousands of photographs that were already taken on the surface and while in orbit.
Check out the "Full Hasselblad Magazines" section.

I don't understand why people bother posting such crappy low res photos.
