- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -1/+51Uranium! We're going back to the moon!
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -2/+35The precision of the topography. 1.6 MILLION data points so far. The best this is that they still have 5 million to map.
This means that their 3D maps are the most accurate in the history of space exploration. The previous map, done by the US, had a quarter million data points. NASA is going to love these when they plan the landing of the new Constellation missions. - HeyBob, on 04/14/2008, -1/+33I wonder how they decide where 0 height is? Take an average of all the high and low points?
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 04/14/2008, -2/+29But did they find the monolith yet? We're about 9 years behind schedule already!
- roarus, on 04/14/2008, -1/+27It ain't HD enough till I can zoom in to see the cheese
- haooken, on 04/14/2008, -1/+25Great. Now we just need to find the Prothian ruins on Mars and we'll be all set...
- searcade, on 04/14/2008, -9/+29Whats hd about that?
- counterplex, on 04/14/2008, -4/+22No, chances are he'll declare war on the moon claimnig WMD. That way he'll get the uranium too!
- blastquake, on 04/14/2008, -3/+20Thorium deposits! must...train...mining..skill....
- FKnight, on 04/14/2008, -2/+16Just in case the article didn't get enough diggs for content, you can always play to the "man is destroying the Earth by breathing" demographic. That's where that came from.
- edebolt, on 04/14/2008, -0/+13Helium 3 is of great interest to scientists because its the near perfect nuclear fuel without the radiation issues. What I am curious about is if the Japanese craft has taken a picture of the equipment left behind from the Apollo lunar missions. According to the crackpot guys who claim the landings were staged and fake and this probe was supposed to prove their theory true.
- Punisher2K, on 04/14/2008, -1/+13Better invade... I mean liberate the moon. Looks like they are working on WMDs
- mrynit, on 04/14/2008, -6/+18Bush would not allow this because the moon could be used as an alternative to oil.
- hadak, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10Go have a cup of coffee :)
- jayscot, on 04/14/2008, -2/+11WTF "trashed mother earth"???
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -1/+9so where do I get a wall poster?
- neo926, on 04/14/2008, -0/+8Stewie Griffin?
- edzilla, on 04/14/2008, -0/+7Yeah, but if you follow the reasoning of said crackpots, those pictures are probably faked too.
- takeo1775, on 04/14/2008, -3/+10so say we all
- dannylewis, on 04/14/2008, -0/+7Japan is trying to start a nuclear program! ***** WE'RE ALL DEAD, GTFO!
- FKnight, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8You know the US only has 50 states, right?
- olenick, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6Every engineering project falls behind schedule: why should moon mining be any different? I want to know how the HAL research is coming along.
- comradeTJH, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6Some kind of misanthrope obviously posted this story. Look how beautiful the moon is and how bad mankind is for Earth ...
- dogbyte_13, on 04/14/2008, -3/+8lol +1
- dattaway, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5Think nuclear powered rockets!
- TopBanana, on 04/14/2008, -3/+8There's plenty of uranium on earth.
- liuite, on 04/14/2008, -2/+7Domo arigato, maybe the driving maps for my GPS will be available soon for download in Kanji!
- varble, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5The top map is reverse because we are looking at the 180 deg. longitude side. The east Hemisphere is on the left and the west is on the right. If you look at the bottom map its reversed because you are looking at the 0 deg side.
- windmarble, on 04/14/2008, -2/+7To bad all the writing is in Japanese.
- CLYF, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5I wonder what are the other uses of the HD Peeping Tom used for besides taking pictures of the moon.
- hydroplane, on 04/14/2008, -1/+6Many Bothans died to bring us this information...
- Delphium226, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5Forget uranium, where's the cheese?
- Opiate, on 04/14/2008, -2/+6My thoughts exactly .. yet another socialist drone speading lies to further the cause of global totalitarianism to save mother earth from the human virus.. please...
- d0ugfunny, on 04/14/2008, -3/+7I'm gonna fly to the moooooon!
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -2/+6So may be this is the reason why the chinese and indians are in such a hurry to go to the moon.
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -2/+6I'm a rocket man...
(Elton John or William Shatner, whichever version you prefer) - dsmx, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4Even used uranium pellets and rods can be reprocessed and used again.
- flipper5311, on 04/14/2008, -1/+5did someone notice on the map that east is on the west and vice versa?
- loquax, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3It was abandoned a while back when all the developers went on to develop The Sims2.
- sevun, on 04/14/2008, -1/+4I like Digg except for the crap like this. This is a good science story with an obnoxious description.
- wiggles, on 04/14/2008, -1/+4Througout human history, wars have been fought over resources. In WWII, it was Japanese thirst for Indonesian oil that brought them to attack Pearl Harbor. The conquest of the New World was brought about by Europe's thirst for gold, cotton, and tobacco. To say that there will be future wars over resources is like saying the sun will rise tomorrow. However, to condemn such wars while still using the booty claimed from those wars (your home on land conquered from native peoples, your gasoline won from oil wars, the gold in your computer won from African wars, the copper from the conquest of South America, the food you eat grown on raped native american lands, I could go on) is hypocritical.
- RecoDesign, on 04/14/2008, -1/+4Where are the alien moon bases located?
- Haecceity, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Are you really, really sure they've only sent back two pictures? I think not.
- reshep, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Isn't oil formed by the compression of animals and trees etc over millions of years...not just a rock with other compounds as such in there? Bet I'm wrong :)
- sonofblacula, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3You're only wrong about you being wrong.
- Arnos, on 04/14/2008, -2/+5Now that we've determined that valuable resources are there- it's time for us Americans to bring "democracy" to them.
- MJDub, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2He might be implying Puerto Rico and Iraq, and then the moon. Bad joke regardless.
- dafragsta, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Bothans are expendible and they are always dying.
- razorsharp84, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2on the other side
- noahhoward, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Flip it over.
