- mattrobuck, on 10/10/2007, -4/+50I wonder if one time on digg, we can just all say "wow thats nice", instead of having to be witty all the time, making fun of stuff thats really not funny...
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36"It was created by Belgian artist Paul Van Hoeydonck, ... to avoid the commercialization of space, Van Hoeydonck's name would not be made public."
Well, that worked out well, huh? - appleswitch, on 10/10/2007, -5/+38Dugg for Wikipedia link, and to spite you. ( mostly the second one though )
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34Would you prefer blogspam?
- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32And of course when they DO find traces/evidence the nutjob conspiracy theorists will of course claim that they are merely "in on it". The great thing about being a conspiracy theorist, it allows you to completely disregard any and all evidence that doesn't fit your own BS point of view.
- Shogi, on 10/10/2007, -7/+34And here I thought the "moon landing was faked" belief was limited to inbred cousin-lovers with nothing better to do than play with guns and poorly formed conspiracy theories.
- phunlee, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21This one's for my space-homies..
- Sirocco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14For starters, you can go here and start researching the moon's odd geographic makeup and how moon dust accumulates and reshapes:
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/061007_moon_dust.html
Without a thick atmosphere or strong gravity to burn up incoming particles the moon works a bit like a giant swiffer, collecting cosmic particles as it orbits. Apollo astronauts also noted that their footprints were quickly covered up by the moon dust just hours after walking around. - danielsan1701, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Let me explain how Wikipedia works: YOU CLEAN IT UP.
- RadicalEdward, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I for one welcome our 3 inch overloards.
- Rahodeb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Digg consists of whatever is linked to and dugg by the members. Quit trying to create your own set of rules and principles.
- zadadka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Extraordinary what uneducated sheep will allow themselves to be convinced by, whether down at the bar, or by some tin-foil blogger.
- zeejay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I heard they also poured out a 40 (of Tang).
- hangtown2004, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I am glad to see that all the Fallen astronauts names are on the Monument
- lickmygiggle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Digg has, as long as I've been here, a news/social bookmarking site. Sure this isn't news. But neither is half the ***** I see on the front page either.
It's social bookmarks. - drizzlelicious, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Ever heard of initiative?
- Rahodeb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Now you've done it. His name has been spoken, and now the floodgates of commercialization hell will open, unleashing a horde of marketing execs on unwitting space. We'll see space movies, telescopes for sale, "name a star" services, astonaut halloween costumes...oh, wait.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6As long as we keep Single Female Lawyer running, we should be sage
- aMMgYrP, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6What about the "CHA" carved into it's surface, does that not count as art? SPOOOOOOOOOOOON!
- turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5that's what she said.
- dasutin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Its good to see countries come together and pay their respects to people who were putting there butts on the line to reach the what seemed impossible.
- chubbybubba, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10" god damnit .... look at this crap ! Damn earthlings leaving their junk all over the moon ! Let's blow their planet up !" -alien 1
"Whoaa.... buddy, lets not get to hasty, don't forget they created the Firefly series...they can't be all bad....as long as that keeps going I say let them live." - alien 2 - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8"Fallen Astronaut is an 8.5cm (slightly over 3") [[[penis]] in a spacesuit. It is the only piece of art on the Moon."
wiki-vandalism is pointless and annoying, can someone clean that up? - TRScheel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Here's a link to another of his edits. See if you cant spot the guy's addition..
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Georgia_Guidestones&oldid=150741710 - glucoseboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4For those curious about 'The First Day Covers scandal' (as I was), here is the link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_15_postage_stamp_scandal - uberchaoslord, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5FTA:
"Currently, our country’s lunar exploration program is divided into three phases—orbiting the moon, landing on the moon and returning back to Earth,” Ouyang said."
I hope for the astronaut's sake they have that third phase worked out before they send them on the second phase. :P - ursername180, on 10/10/2007, -10/+13Just you wait... Aliens will find that little statue and bring him to life, causing a new race of 3 inch men that will DEVOUR US ALL!
- Slovenian6474, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The Gorgotron. He's also laying waste to all the craps.
- N10E, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Nah, the moon landing conspiracy is becoming more and more mainstream. I'd bet if a survey was done asking if it were faked, the number of people saying yes would be quite high compared to what would be expected.
- Shogi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The issue has never really been the ability, it's more an issue, of why. We could probably get back to the moon if we wanted to, but there's no real gain to doing that at this point unless we go back with the intent of setting up a moon base, which at this point is unrealistic (look at the INTL space station). Not only that but the new design of the space shuttle is not suited to that kind of mission. All in all it's not worth it.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Okay, since this is the serious thread, I want to know how death from peritonitis during an operation for a stomach ulcer counts as during spaceflights and training exercises. I mean, he was the commander of the spaceflight with the first spacewalk, and that qualifies him for a sculpture and stuff, but this doesn't make sense.
No, I'm serious. There's got to be another reason for him being there. - sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually it was just Tang dust. Better for the dusty environment. This was enough sugar to culture the bacterial left behind by the astronauts. Now it has morphed into a new life form that lives on the dark side of the moon to keep from detection as it builds its armies to conquer Earth for more Tang. Well, probably not.
- *jooloop*, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"Fallen Astronaut is an 8.5cm (slightly over 3") aluminium sculpture of an astronaut in a spacesuit. It is the only piece of art on the Moon."
It's fixed now... - justanotherday, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5The Apollo 15 crew got in a little hot water over this but it wasn't really their fault and they were already in MAJOR hot water over the "First Day Covers" scandal from the same flight so it didn't amount to much. They were all suspended and removed from the Apollo 17 backup crew and none of them ever flew again. Jack Swigert (from Apollo 13) was also involved in this (the First Day Covers scandal) and it also cost him his NASA career.
- TheTankengine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Be Bold!
- barryiggins, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3well, to be honest, the name 'Van Hoeydonck' made me smirk a little, but I'm kind of retarded.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Besides, in todays dollars a moon mission will cost billions and billions of dollars. That money would be better spent sending all applicable students to college for free or perhaps putting up a few more Hubble replacements and other science projects.
- 3lijah, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4You're the one who memorizes how many of his articles make it to the front page.. It's the comments that have no relevance to the article posted that make me lose faith in digg.
Sorry. - martin2968, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2this is old.. this certainly happened in 1971 BURY!!!11!!!!11one!!11
- TheTankengine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The Georgia Guidestones are a huge granite penis located on a hilltop...
...I see what you did there. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You won't see that because RogerStrong is ***** and has never been to Japan (or at least any Japanese bookstores). No one in Japan thinks they won the war and despite the propaganda on Digg, almost everyone in Japan learns about the atrocities the Imperialist Japanese did HS and College kind of like how Americans learn that Columbus was a slaver in HS.
On the other-hand, good luck finding any state textbook in China that claims that the US won WW2 versus Japan and it wasn't Mao Ze Dung and his army. - sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well remember, Firefly was a future WITHOUT aliens, so they may not like that either. :)
- Mommy2Lots, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So true. "Wow, that's nice" just sounds like a standard comment that someone could essentially copy/paste and put to anything.
Anyway, I think the fallen astronaut monument sounds really cool. If the replica sculptures went to museums, then it's not so bad that they were replicas. However, if they went to the public, it may be a bit dishonoring, but only because of the agreement made between the astronauts. - arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh sorry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavel_Belyayev
I thought since he's the only one there listed as Death By Disease it would be unnecessary. - Frnnkdlxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What about those 300 spires in the background?
- b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1ooooh, that sure showed him :P
- ManyAsOne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No wind, but plenty of asteroid impacts, especially without an atmosphere to burn them up en route.
- pegisys, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3What it's been ~50 years since the first moon landing, I think most people may think it is fake no because of how we can't seem to get back to the moon.
considering how much technology has evolved in every other area, and that space travel has regressed to barely getting to the space station, I can understand how people could be easily influenced. - R2Bacca, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It would help if you gave us the name of said commander... for our own research purposes...
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It isn't really dust, but mold growing on the cheese that makes up the moon. Come on. Get it right.
