- suxmonkey, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6"According to Zuckerman, this is thought to be similar to the encounter that produced the Earth-Moon system more than four billions ago." Well, we've got a head-start on them then :) Very cool, thanks for the great post Graham

- gamebittk, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1It's called the Orpheus Theory. It is an idea that billions of years ago, there was an interplanetary collision between Orpheus and Earth Mach 1, that destroyed the planet and wiped out all possible life. The debri from both planets eventually cooled off, resulting in Earth Mach 2, our earth, and the moon as a satellite. The harsh conditions created then allowed for the development of life (google "Primordial Soup Experiment"), and the resulting moon helped regulate the Earth's rotation and climate, (as well as tide). Earth after the collision was a crazy place, but it eventually cooled down, and provided conditions for current life.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orpheus_%28planet%29 for more info. Really cool stuff. - yujie, on 11/16/2007, -2/+2Quick before someone decide on a abortion

- Terr01, on 11/16/2007, -6/+3They're not planet embryos! Planetary collisions are murder!
They're unborn-star-babies like David Bowman! Write your Representative today. - akilleen, on 11/16/2007, -3/+1The title sounds like something someone would come up with on LSD.
- Nudar, on 11/16/2007, -3/+1I thought it said plant embryos at first. I'm like "What the?" Not that a planet embryo makes any more sense to me.
