- inactive, on 10/22/2009, -0/+50A rover moves around, a lander stays in one place.
- omgwtflawl, on 10/22/2009, -1/+48I went to a "space camp" thing once where we did "space things" one of them was trying to remotely pilot a rover (remote controlled toy truck) over the surface of "mars" (rocky sandbox) and also pilot a remote controlled arm to get some objects into the tube of a rocket. The arm broke and the truck caught on fire. The counselors dubbed it the "Russian Mission to Mars".
- preppypoof, on 10/22/2009, -1/+33well, that's pretty self-explanatory now isn't it?
/me feels like a dumbass - PCloadLetterWTF, on 10/22/2009, -0/+32Russians were damn determined there in the beginning.
- IrvineKinneas50, on 10/22/2009, -0/+25Sending unmanned equipment through the extremes of outer space is difficult, imagine that.
The US' success rate is actually pretty high. - inactive, on 10/22/2009, -0/+17Russia really likes the Edison theory.
“I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work” - sid1662, on 10/22/2009, -0/+16Dugg for the excellent handling of graphic elements – got to love information based graphic design!
- preppypoof, on 10/22/2009, -2/+14can someone please explain the difference between a "lander" and a "rover"? Googling only gets me the crappy SUV company.
- appleseed1234, on 10/22/2009, -0/+12Almost half of these attempts took place in the 60s. When did we get so lame?
- Buttersweets, on 10/22/2009, -3/+13Hey look, a reason to be proud of America!
- williemain, on 10/22/2009, -3/+9Then did they make you wear skimpy bathing suits and cuddle with each other and dub it, "Greek Mission to Mars"?
- thebreach, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5I never knew Russia was trying so hard to get to Mars, though they do have a history of coving up such failures like they did with their failed N1 rocket during the moon race (The soviet version of the Saturn V)
- tokomini, on 10/23/2009, -0/+5In 1964, NASA achieved a fly-by. In 1996-98, the Russia/China and Japan attempts were deemed missions failures that seemingly couldn't achieve a darn thing. Thank you, John F. Kennedy, for the foresight and understanding that space exploration was worth a damn.
- tokomini, on 10/23/2009, -0/+51) can't answer that for sure, but very likely exorbitant amounts of billions that probably increased after each failure.
2) doesn't really matter, a single monumental discovery makes everything worthwhile. - Lefts, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4Well, it's a 100% success after 2000.
Then again, sample size is incredibly tiny. - Denex, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3I am horribly reminded of those sex ed vids in which you see a closeup of sperm cells attempting to penetrate an egg.
- OneOfNone, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3"Try again" strategy actually worked for Russians - after getting it right in 1971 and until the end of 1996, the success/failure rate was the same as for US. Their REAL mistake was abandoning all that and stopping after 1996 failure. All that pain in the beginning and no reward in the end.
- smashblu, on 10/22/2009, -3/+6Yeah that and creating pretty much every one of the most important inventions of the last century.
- avianeddy, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3dugg for succinctness
- KahRahTay, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2i see what you did there...
- VigRoco, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2It's actually like climbing Olympus Mons...
- acid_jazz, on 10/22/2009, -3/+5The failures were mostly Russian. Just sayin'.
- CaptainMcBad, on 10/22/2009, -3/+5Dude... Looks like little spermies gettin' at the egg.
Just sayin'. - ToastedFart, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2I didn't realize how recent the successful Mars missions are and how few there have been. I wonder what it'll look like in 50 years. Exciting stuff for sure.
- LarkStew, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2On the difficulty scale, going to Mars must be like climbing Mount Everest times a gazillion. Probably a bit harder even than that.
- masterstghm, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2When we first started settling the wild west and all the children wanted to play with cowboys and Indians.
- avianeddy, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Japan only tried once???
C'MON GUYS!!! - hereticoftruth, on 10/24/2009, -0/+2We really should master a self sustaining colony on the moon before considering colonizing Mars. Let robots build a Mars colony or at least assemble building materials and establish a base camp.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2I remember doing that too. I hope you chose the rigid arm.
- Atario, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1I never knew they landed before we even orbited. Nor that they landed again before we ever did.
- Grova, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1Didn't realize there were so many missions. Me learnt something.
- williemain, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1what about "Mission to Mars" with Gary Sinise, or even "Rocketman" with Harland Williams?
- tmonsta1, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1it should be noted that most of the failures occurred at about the same time we were trying to land a man on the moon...
- Atario, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1I (and my neck) would have appreciated a more landscape orientation, but yeah.
- stang4783, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1I would like to know:
1) associated dollars for each mission?
2) what have we learned from these missions that makes them worth while? - Unikraken, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Poor trolling
1/10
Not even trying. - bringitontimx, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1Gametes ftw
- EddiePotato, on 10/22/2009, -1/+1That's not as juvenile a statement as it first appears. Some of the panspermia/Gaia type persuasion theorize that humans are indeed an essential part of the Earth's reproductive system; that our drive to terraform/colonize other worlds is actually a sort of Gaian sex drive!
- LarkStew, on 10/23/2009, -2/+1There's about 98% of the world that isn't the USA you forgot about there.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/23/2009, -5/+2Dwight to williemain: IDIOT!
- axalon, on 10/22/2009, -9/+3Alright great, so when are we heading out there?
- ghostright, on 10/22/2009, -7/+152% Failure rate - Didn't these guy see "Red Planet" with Val Kilmer?
- ccpearce5, on 10/22/2009, -11/+4The infographic forms a constellation!
- jeffambo, on 10/22/2009, -13/+3Russians...What a bunch of failures.
but we already knew that - DrNemo, on 10/22/2009, -15/+2What a waste of people's money.
- williemain, on 10/22/2009, -29/+2Me= Red Foreman: Dumbass
You (Preppy)= Eric Foreman: Yuk yuk yuk, my name is Eddie Brock and I'm an idiot!
