- EuphopiaB, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13And to think, we are only 1 in 750 Quadrillion ( 750,000,000,000,000,000 ) recorded solar systems...
But this one is our little rock =)
They should be higher res and stereoscopic. - treblig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13"To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."
-Carl Sagan - emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I bought the HD-DVD set of the BBC documentary series "Planet Earth." There are some really beautiful shots in there. Amazing series altogether really.
- sexualaj, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15So much beauty in our world.

- Exodust, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Not trying to spam but check this out. This is one of the best pictures of the earth taken from outer space and a description of why it is so awesome.

(It's a video by David Fu... The text is read by Carl Sagan himself and the background music is by Mogwai.) - mitchua, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5So...beautiful...Should have sent.....a poet....
- Stratochief66, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Of all the planets we know of, Earth won the life lottery, it developed very complex life in a short enough time to let use be here today and do what we do. Do I think those crazy odds prove the existence of God? No, because it could have been one of a number of planets approaching infinity that happened to develop life like this. Perhaps there are other planets were the life didn't have as good of luck, like they reached the stone age around the time their star went nova. On the other hand, some other life could have hit an even bigger jackpot and developed in a solar system with another life bearing, but not intelligent life bearing, planet for them to colonize. What would the philosophical and religious outlook of those civilizations be? The scale of the universe is itself a beautiful and frightening thing.
- flannelback, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There's too much altitude on the shuttle for a couple of them to be real, but they're still great views of the little blue marble.
- loconet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Here is _the_ site for Earth from space images: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/
- oMeSSiaHo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4These pictures always make the earth seem so small. Things like deltas formed by rivers flowing into the ocean look like little streams. It almost seems like I can actually see my house from space. It makes that fact that man has fought to control it amusing. We're killing each other over our backyards!
- emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The HD rips found on torrents are usually just 720p, and compressed. The series in HD however looks amazing, probably the prettiest thing in my whole collection, although I've heard that the recent Discovery Channel release isn't as good as the BBC release. I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make on a 19" monitor, but on my 45" LCD it's hard for me to even watch normal DVDs anymore :)
- Killerah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It wouldn't surprise me to find life in some small form out there somewhere, but I doubt we'll ever find intelligent life, it would admittedly be pretty cool though. Aliens? Heck yeah! But yeah, not gonna happen.
- tsteele93, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1dugg because I didn't understand it but it looked intelligent. Come on, you all know you do it!
- tsteele93, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have the HD versions on cable and the plain DVD versions on - well -DVD. I was disappointed with the plain DVD version. I'm going to have to buy a blue-ray or hd player soon.
- qazzi76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1As usual all unusual stuff airbrushed out...
- MCDupree, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Those really are amazing pictures.
- esperoboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2If I was an alien and happened to find / see the planet like this, I so would have wanted to land on this planet and check what's going on. So beautiful.
- chowdah, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2These are all NASA photos, so you'll be able to find the Hi res there.
- aleishman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No stars in the background... must be faked.
(this was a joke) - Stratochief66, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Have you taken a look at the technology used to discover the extra solar planets that we have currently seen? Giant telescopes are used to observe the luminosity of a specific bright, near star and look for changes. If there are a specific kind of very small periodic changes then calculations are done based on what we have observed of that stars light and we estimate the size of the planet, distance from its star, sometimes even the composition based on how the spectra itself is changed when the planet is between us and the star.
Without actually sending a probe there, this is really the only method we have of seeing if other planets exist or not. Do you seen now why we haven't found life on other planets yet? We can barely tell when the composition of a very hot Jupiter type planet contains some oxygen, let alone whether there are bacteria forming within that or other planets. Given time, we will find more hospitable planets and may eventually find evidence of life, but that will most likely require a probe sent to that star or a form of life that is trying to be found.
A person can both understand science and have faith, the force that created the universe in the first place will always be a mystery as far as science is concerned because of the limitations of scientific observation. Science has however gathered evidence that the earth and the universe is considerably older than 6000- 10000 years as many young earth creationists believe. The scientists who gather geological evidence of this can themselves believe in a young earth, science is fine with that. Science doesn't say that there is no possibility that a God set this all up to trick the scientific method, but others will choose to believe otherwise. - asourapple, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Holy *****! Earth is the third planet from the sun?
- melat0nin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That video is astonishing, thanks so much for posting it. Really great to see the majesty of Mogwai's music being married with something so profound.
- HunkieChan, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5pictures by superman
- tsteele93, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Would be a better story if someone could somehow tie these pictures to Global Warming theory. For example, "NASA pictures of Earth from space clearly show global warming." Or, "Global Warming skeptics deny space pictures show evidence of species die-off."
- estacado, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2What's up with all the lame comments?

- Exodust, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1aww... so so humbling is the video. MAkes you question, what is the world all about? In a vast space of nothingness, we are a spec of life. Yet, we feel that we are the sole important beings in the universe. Smack on the face of astrology. If anyone you know believes in astrology, show them this. Tell them, the solar system and its members aren't there to tell us about ourselves, but to show that how insignificant we are as seen from that vantage point.

No *****.

- Killerah, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I will eat my shoes if we ever discover sentient life on other planets. Come on, we haven't even discovered non intelligent life on other planets! We've never seen another planet with the ability to support human life, do you really believe it's all cosmic coincidence? Like I said, what about all the things that could have gone wrong? Asteroids have come close to earth in the past, if it were really eons and eons old you'd figure we would have been taken out by an asteroid a long time ago. And given that much time don't you think the sun would have had to change stages? How is our planet not a barbecue by now? Also, you still didn't explain where did the universe come from in the first place? There had to be a start somewhere. Spontaneous generation isn't scientific law anymore, something can't come from nothing. The odds don't prove God, believing in God will always take some faith, but if you ask me a lack of belief takes even more faith (though not the lifestyle that most people who don't believe in God choose). You see your existence as a cosmic coincidence and the universe as something that's incomprehensibly vast, but has just sort of always been there. I see my existence as being divinely appointed, including everything that has ever happened in my life and the lives of my ancestors, it all came together to produce me to be a very specifically designed tool in the hands of God. I also see the universe as incomprehensibly vast, but to me it's more than just that, when I look up at the stars at night I see stars that my creator holds in place if for no other reason than just to please me at that moment. In Job 38:31-32 God says that He controls the constellations, even their movements across the night sky in their seasons! So not only do I believe in a God who cares about me on a personal level, I believe that He's powerful enough to not only create a universe, but hold it in place in all of it's incomprehensible vastness just to create something amazing for me to see when I look up at the stars at night! That's how much He loves me! The scale of the universe is absolutely a beautiful thing, but to me it's certainly not frightening, it's one of God's most complex displays of His love for me.
