- Zarokima, on 05/20/2008, -8/+276All new doomsday myths should call for mass suicide before the "last day." It would help a little with the population problem, we would only lose idiots, and as far as they know their beliefs were right -- everybody wins!
- Frecklefoot, on 05/20/2008, -3/+225Darn, I guess now I have to plan on some sort of career...
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -5/+120I think the ancient Mayans were just predicting the release of Duke Nukem Forever.
- PinkFloydFan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+112Why would I bet on it? Even if I won the bet I still wouldn't get paid.
- protodon, on 05/20/2008, -2/+112What if it doesn't end then?? When is the next apocalypse scheduled?
- NoGodsNoMasters, on 05/20/2008, -11/+88Dugg for the Dr. Karl quote... and the debunking of a ridiculously stupid idea.
- swrostmore, on 05/20/2008, -2/+69"Hillary Clinton is Posturing for 2012" is right above this on the Upcoming Stories queue. Coincidence...or PROPHECY
- EdwardNigma, on 05/20/2008, -4/+67Why can't the Mayans predict something nice...
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -6/+66mayans believed time was cyclical and that at the end time would restart.12/21/12 is the start of a new cycle. we now know that time does not exist and is only a method of tracking events. since there is no way for time to "restart" the 'prophecy' is wrong. any one who actually read into this just a little bit, should have come across these facts. there is no reason to perpetuate the myth that 2012 is the end of the world.
- Coolmatt49, on 05/20/2008, -0/+49December 21, 2012: The Day the World Ends!
December 22, 2012: Bingo Night at 7 PM - iBeej, on 05/20/2008, -13/+60And somehow, Hillary will still be "on the road to the White House".
- ncairns, on 05/20/2008, -3/+50Yeah, this is just stupid - the world is not going to end in 2012.
That's just when the invasion is coming. - unusualbob, on 05/20/2008, -0/+43**BREAKING NEWS**
Scientology has announced that they have discovered a safe where Hubbard kept a letter containing his prediction of the end of the world. They have said that this letter states that unless one gives all of his assets to the church and sacrifices themselves in a volcano before the final day then they will not be saved. The church has yet to say when this day might be but they have said that it is very soon. - SpectralSounds, on 05/20/2008, -0/+42Elaine: According to my source, the end of the world will be on February 14th, in the year two thousand and sixteen.
Peter Venkman: Valentine's day. Bummer. Where'd you get your date, Elaine?
Elaine: I recieved this information from an alien. I was sitting at the bar, alone and this alien approached me. He started talking to me, he bought me a drink. And then he must have used some kind of a ray or a mind control device because he forced me to follow him to his room and that's where he told me about the end of the world.
Peter Venkman: So your alien had a room at the Holiday Inn, Paramis?
- TacticalPenguin, on 05/20/2008, -1/+36Because they're dead
- steger, on 05/20/2008, -4/+32Duh, the world is going to end on January 19, 2038, at 3:14 a.m. UTC.
- Duggan360, on 05/20/2008, -1/+25Here is how a doomsday theory works =
Same Month and Year Number = Doomsday
Same number day, month, year = Doomsday
Anyday they will have a guess on = Doomsday - zcets, on 05/20/2008, -1/+23lets all cuddle
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -0/+22Apophis is coming in 2036. We must be ready.
- nealsoad, on 05/20/2008, -2/+23If you believe in this ***** than why wait? Just go ahead and kill yourself so rest of us won't have to hear about it for the next four years.
- nreynolds, on 05/20/2008, -0/+21#1 atheism does not have to be a depressing suicidal system of belief.
#2 nihilism does not have to be a depressing suicidal system of belief (although more people *think* that it is). In fact, I find nihilism to be a very comforting philosophy (not having to worry about was some god thinks about you, purpose, etc). I think that existentialism is better, but I hate how negatively people view nihilism.
#3 not that any of this really had anything to do with your post. - Nebberz, on 05/20/2008, -5/+24The world could use some of that enlightenment prophecy stuff though (:
- DavidTTT, on 05/20/2008, -1/+19Ya but if you bet it wont happen its a Win Win
Dont happen ,you get paid
Dose happen, you will be too dead to pay up - Diderotten, on 05/20/2008, -5/+22You hear that religion? Time to capitalize on people's fears.
- Topher06, on 05/20/2008, -6/+22I think the apocalypse must be in the hands of the Duke Nukem Forever game developers; its always getting pushed back and most people think its a myth.
- prosayik, on 05/20/2008, -2/+17Cool, so like new tech in 2012 like a 200gb iPhone-- in 5 colors!
- Akaji, on 05/20/2008, -3/+18You'll see! You'll all see! The world will end in 2000, err, 2001, err, 2002, err, 2003, err....
- mexicanman07, on 05/21/2008, -0/+15i honestly cant tell if your lying or not
- debuggercll, on 05/20/2008, -0/+15On most 32-bit systems, the time_t data type used to store this second count is a signed 32-bit integer. The latest time that can be represented in this format, following the POSIX standard, is 03:14:07 UTC on Tuesday, January 19, 2038.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem - KublaKhan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+15That's my birthday.
:-( - Arcticfx, on 05/20/2008, -4/+17It's not a matter of the world ending, no Apocalypse coming to destroy us all. The Mayan Calendar ends several times, each more quickly than the last. The end of the calendar is about a significant alteration in the workings of the world. The last end was at around the time of the Industrial Revolution. So maybe 2012 brings us some awesome new tech that completely changes how we live. No one knows though, because the Mayans never wrote that sort of thing down.
- protodon, on 05/20/2008, -0/+13Funny, I was thinking the opposite.
- amirman, on 05/21/2008, -0/+13it's an apparently HUGE misconception that the Mayans predicted some sort of doomsday on this date. They never did any such thing. The fact is that their calendar which was based on planetary cycles ends on this date. that's it. the calendar stops. That doesn't mean that they predicted any sort of doomsday just that the cycles that the calendar were based on came to an accord and they decided, "Hey, that's thousands of years off from now, we could probably leave this calendar as it is and go play with our kids now"
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/21/2008, -0/+12Every 5000 years. So we need to keep the 5th Element safe.
- Freshjive787, on 05/20/2008, -3/+15its a misconception that the Mayan calender predicts Doomsday. The true prophecy is referencing the apocalypse, which translated means to remove a leather cover. This date is not a time of destruction for humanity, but rather as the article suggests, a time of greater spiritual enlightenment for humanity.
Now i don't necessarily believe that 2012 will hold any great relevance as predicted by the Mayan calender (there are two other calenders that predict the same date, i believe the Chinese and another Indian culture) but i do think that simply disregarding the possibility of such events that are based off of astronomical calculations is as foolish as prescribing to them whole-heartedly. - eastwood24, on 05/20/2008, -1/+12That's why I choose to believe in magic and myth. It makes questions like are we over populated unimportant. Now if you will please forgive me, I have to drink this punch before the mother ship takes me away to zndori 6. (sips punch) You poor ignorant fools, I know the truth, the tru...(silence).
- twigboy, on 05/21/2008, -0/+11from the sounds of things, Elaine had many impacts.
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -1/+11Ahhhhhhhhhhhh crap just in time for christmas.
- bluto36, on 05/20/2008, -1/+11the world already ended with haleys comet back in 96. this is all a figment of your imagination, you are already gone.
this is digg which means you took the elevator down if you know what i mean - aptanalogy, on 05/20/2008, -3/+13Yeah, those modern day researchers and their "science", "facts", "logic", and whatnot; amazing that it's all in a vain attempt to defy the doomsday predictions of our Mayan forefathers, who were superior in every way. Imagine, attempting to thwart the power of the Mayan gods with "technology" and scoffing at their use of calenders! Oh, what vainglorious hubris-filled nincompoops these mortals be!
/sarcasm - MonkeyFarts, on 05/20/2008, -1/+9You know, the sad thing is that you know damn well that come 2011 to early 2012 we're going to see a huge spike in cults and mass suicides because people are so convinced that 12-21-12 is the end of the world.
As far as I'm concerned, every other prediction in history of the end of the world has been totally wrong, so the odds aren't looking very good for this one. It's only scary if you're superstitious. And an idiot. - cuntmate99, on 05/20/2008, -1/+9it's the end of an age. not the end of the world.
- TheHim, on 05/21/2008, -0/+8If you jump on the 2012 bandwagon right now and publish some doomsday books, you might be able to retire in four years, right when it gets debunked. Consider it!
- Metasquares, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8The best policy is probably to make your own life better in a manner that also makes the lives of others better. Everyone wins.
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -6/+13ya know its funny, in school i was always applauded by my teachers for my grammar. i always got great grades on my papers, i acheived the highest possible scores on the reading taas test, etc. and yet grammar nazis on the internet always find something wrong with my writing. i think perhaps you should just stfu and worry about more important ***** than my grammar, when i'm writing with intention of publication i'll worry about it.
- inactive, on 05/20/2008, -1/+8It has been foretold, but the Elders!
- inactive, on 05/21/2008, -0/+7Dont worry , you still have global warming to use as an excuse for why you've never made the effort to do something with your life.
