Mir was occupied for 15 years - with some people people staying on board longer than a year. Other experiments have been done on the ground, with people sealed into mock Mars-mission spacecraft for similar lengths.
It means we take precautions, not hide under our beds. - paulvq, on 11/01/2009, -0/+9"it appears to weaken their immune systems"
Look, I know most people don't even read the article. I know I didn't read it, but that was in the ***** description. - gbudavid, on 10/31/2009, -1/+9You Have WHAT?????? Scotty;))
- Lykil, on 11/01/2009, -0/+7Invent those *****' warp drives already, science!!!
- InfiniteNothing, on 11/01/2009, -0/+5That's fine and dandy up until a giant meteor engulfs a small country in flame and the resulting dust freezes the planet. What are you going to do with your limitless energy then?
- darkzealot89, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3You are an idiot?

- charlietuna, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2Tens times the spending won't make it happen ten times faster, besides which a number f people with cancer might argue that there are other more deserving research projects which would benefit from that money.
- dafragsta, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2"Other experiments have been done on the ground, with people sealed into mock Mars-mission spacecraft for similar lengths."
That doesn't take into account the "first it appears to weaken their immune systems; and second, it increases the virulence and growth of microbes" part. - Groovydoo, on 11/02/2009, -2/+4You hate them because they are valid! Sending a man to Mars provides absolutely no return on investment! It is just a photo op! Send a rover instead.
- InfiniteNothing, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2Along the same lines, as Warren Buffet says, you can't make a baby in 1 month by getting 9 women pregnant.

How you spam your stupid ass links, with NO relation to the article at hand. - scyphozoa, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1PROMETHIUM X

God, I hate the space takes too much money solve problems on earth first arguments - Joshper85, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1mars rocks hit the earth all the time. From asteroids knocking pieces of Mars to Earth
- piattorney, on 11/01/2009, -1/+1I think it's great you take precautions. Isn't that the point? Learn from this so we can venture out?
- InfiniteNothing, on 11/01/2009, -1/+1Have the astronaughts in the months coming up to the mission hook up on an aphoresis machine that will separate out their white blood cells. Bank those cells. Let the 'naught regenerate those cells a few weeks before the mission. Transfuse the banked cells back to the 'naught while he's in space.

- browwiw, on 11/01/2009, -3/+2Just another argument for transhumanism in space exploration. Digitized uploaded consciousnesses don't get sick...or require life support.
- Sux4Bux, on 11/01/2009, -6/+3So yet another insignificant thing NASA is going to waste a ton of time and effort studying. We didn't get to the moon within a decade by over analyzing so much crap. Obviously germs are worth consideration but they just need to do a deep cleanse and bring along antibiotics. JUST BUILD A DAMNED ROCKET AND DO IT ALREADY.
Frankly I find it absolutely pathetic that the NASA of 40 years ago was so much more capable that the NASA of today despite vastly superior computers and materials. - Groovydoo, on 11/01/2009, -9/+4Here is a better project: devote ALL of the funding and resources that a Mars project would demand and develop a nuclear fusion reactor so we can have safe, clean, and limitless energy whereas a 55-gallon barrel of water could power all of Los Angeles. The earth needs that more than a photo op!
- ftc08, on 11/01/2009, -7/+1Easily solution: Don't let anybody who is sick go to Mars. You're NASA, you've got the brains to come up with that.
