- conceptkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Thats cool, I was curious on how the hell they did that from so far away.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"Probably the most special day I've had as a rover [driver] was the day I built my first drive solo" on Mars, Stroupe said. "We were on the plateau on Husband Hill, and we were driving along the edge to get imagery of the valley below. I parked us right on the edge and got a spectacular view."
"I remember looking at those tracks and realizing what they meant -- my "first tracks on Mars, and the first tracks actually made by a woman driving on another planet," she said. "I am proud of it every time I see that panorama from the very top looking down at those tracks."
very cool. - 11Heather, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Gives a whole new dimension to remote control toys. Always knew all that time of messing around with gadgets would be worth something.
- coldshuts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dugg for having Linux installed on the rovers.
- HUKI365, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Women drivers....
- Ebacherville, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The lag has to suck
- DigitAl56K, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I just saved 15% on my rover insurance by switching to Geico.
- AvionicsGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Working at JPL has been my dream job. I just with Bush et al. would quit de-moralizing us with this nutty HSPD-12 stuff. See http://www.hspd12jpl.org for more information.
- dakilla91, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2WOW...That is the best job ever...damnit I wish I had gone into science...:(
- kinadian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What I'd like to know is why someone would drive their car to work in their chair in front of their home computer. Then their car would be at work without them!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I love it! The human endeavour being realized through the sheer devotion to science, rationality, and the human spirit!
- compgeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1must suck if you make a mistake and come to work the next day WHO THE ***** DROVE THE ROVER OVER A CLIFF YESTERDAY *innocent whistling*
- Pplus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Imagine driving your car to work by sitting in your chair in front of your home computer. If you can imagine this, then maybe you can understand what it's like to be one of NASAs Mars rover drivers."
Only it goes 2 feet per day and you have to clear everything you do from looking over your shoulder to making a left past 15 bosses.
Don't get me wrong, I think having two remote control golf carts on Mars is an unbelievable feat, but let's not pretend that the person who is driving the things around is having fun. That job must be the definition of having no creative input at work... - Chaoticfist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Now to edit my comments...NEW PEOPLE OF THE WORLD Reading the article before commenting apparently ensures you do not look like an idiot......
- jnadke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The article states the Simulators run Linux, not the rovers. I highly doubt the rovers would run Linux. The processors on the thing are probably low performance and highly radiation resistant. I'm sure they are at the very least running a RTOS, if not custom designed code.
Linux is stable, but not that stable (speaking as an embedded systems developer). - tkotam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1""I remember looking at those tracks and realizing what they meant -- my "first tracks on Mars, and the first tracks actually made by a woman driving on another planet," she said. And who says a WOMAN can't drive??? - Megaton3G, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1One of the planners teach at my university. He had to skip a couple classes because he lives in mars time and the class time and rover planning time overlapped.
- iepurilah, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Until you do something wrong and the whole thing gets f**ked up
- jsauter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I always imagined it would be like LOGO Turtle from way back in elementary school.
Oh the days when programming was making a stupid triangle draw a star and flash colours....! - spyd3rweb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2driving a rc car around at 2 ft per hour is REALLY exciting!!!
- dial911for911, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0it's just like a videogame called Control the Mars Rover for 50c
- joegibes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1What about the 20-some minute lag time (due to the speed of radio waves and the sheer distance)?
It's like CS:S on dialup (you gonna get owned). - blitzer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I wouldnt trust this to a "techie"
Surely you would want someone with coordination and motor skills..
Sorry Mr Digg.. you will have to stick to the programming job. - SolarGuy626, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I wish i had one
- jnadke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0They did it with strings, magic, fairies and unicorns...
- guythomas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Why does everything have to be about the vagina to you Tom??
- Shevanel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1it'd be funner with a joystick

What is Digg?
