- BrandonJM, on 04/01/2009, -10/+196You know what? Let the guy have the room named for him. It's some nice publicity for a space program too often ignored except in tragic circumstances.
- GeckoSlayer, on 04/01/2009, -2/+127I thought a certain imageboard put a few million toward the name Battletoad?
- regularsteven, on 04/01/2009, -1/+97Compared to what NASA are usually dealing with, I though this would be a simple problem to solve.
- EmptyCraniuM, on 04/01/2009, -3/+91I don't mind if NASA chooses a different name ASLONG as they send Colbert up there to do a show.
- digghasnoethics, on 04/01/2009, -5/+78Just name the crapper after him. "The Colbert Memorial Restroom". Then the astronauts can say "just going for a Colbert".
- PterionFracture, on 04/01/2009, -2/+51Video of Colbert's challenge to NASA:
http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-vi ... - CaptainNoPants, on 04/01/2009, -0/+43Yeah! Stupid universe with its stupid face
- kylere, on 04/01/2009, -6/+43Colbert clearly learned from Howard Stern, this is a very typical Stern-ish stunt. Not that I am slamming it, because I think that if NASA was silly enough to let it be open, they should live with it and be glad it is not "The Limbaugh Room"
- killerofkiller, on 04/01/2009, -1/+38200k voted for colbert and won..I dont think ''a few million' voted for all the names combined....
- PterionFracture, on 04/01/2009, -0/+31They were unable to deliver.
- BrutePhysics, on 04/01/2009, -1/+31I am a physics major at university, and while I understand that you may be upset let's be honest here. The naming system for a spacecraft is BORING. Yes, "Serenity" sounds very regal and intelligent but it doesn't really capture people's attention. The average person just goes "there goes another bucket of money up in the air". Colbert may not be a great name either but at least it has caused the program to get some much deserved attention, because in the end it doesn't matter what the few of us who "really" care think... it is about getting the average people interested and involved.
- killerofkiller, on 04/01/2009, -2/+29If O'reilly ever did something like this, Colbert would tell his users to vote for him instead.. I'm pretty sure more of Colbert's users know how to use the internet...
- CheshireCat, on 04/01/2009, -4/+26While I'll admit that the Browncoat in me really wanted the name Serenity. Colbert did put on a hell of a stunt and it's only a node anyways. Geeze.
- Dr.Fade, on 04/01/2009, -3/+24I have a great name option for NASA. Serenity Colbert Astrophysics Module! or S.C.A.M.
- skztr, on 04/01/2009, -4/+24NASA wants to name it after a space ship in a popular science fiction program. Do you really think most people who voted for it just thought that "Serenity" sounded neato?
- jameskong15, on 04/01/2009, -0/+19What makes people who have followed the program for years more qualified to name something? Nothing does because it's a ***** name. This isn't a poll on which rocket booster we should be using to take us to Mars or what safety systems we need to implement, it's a poll asking for people to name a big hunk of metal. You're trying to make it out like naming it Colbert would make it less capable or something, pretty ridiculous.
Also, Diggers probably can't name the nodes because they are named some obscure ***** that nobody gives a ***** about. The same will be said about this node if they choose to ignore the will of the people. - SPRFRKR, on 04/01/2009, -1/+19This is their PR. They wanted to drum up attention to them by having a public naming contest- it is receiving much more attention than they could ever have hoped for. I don't know why they are fighting it. Colbert will undoubtedly mention it many times in the future if so named.
- fuzzynyanko, on 04/01/2009, -2/+19I agree with a digger on another one of these pages. They could name it the "Stephen Colbert Serenity Module". It even sounds cool
- YourMomsAnAnon, on 04/01/2009, -3/+20Don't blame me. I voted for Xenu.
- Crazyredivan, on 04/01/2009, -1/+18Something tells me he'd actually enjoy that, what with his portrait hanging between the bathrooms in the Smithsonian and all...
- offrdbandit, on 04/01/2009, -2/+17College kids passing around vodka.
- Kral, on 04/01/2009, -0/+15They likely invalidated it as that certain imageboard uses a lot of automated scripts.
- kck724, on 04/01/2009, -4/+19I bet battletoad had more votes than colbert.....
- Yawgmoth, on 04/01/2009, -0/+14It was a contest, not a ***** law. It's a good thing NASA has the right to veto the decision. Can you imagine if 4chan got ahold of the contest and named it PedoBear or ShoopDaWoop or something.
Naming contest =/= laws and they should not be held to the same standards. - fluxion, on 04/01/2009, -1/+15it would be exceedingly cool on NASA's part to honor the vote.
lets just hope O'reilly doesnt pull a similar stunt....it's a double-edged blade. - Bloodwine, on 04/01/2009, -1/+15name the room after Colbert, and name the next space vehicle Serenity. I think the name Serenity is better suited to a space vehicle.
- Anim8tor, on 04/01/2009, -2/+15This was great PR for both of them.
- jameskong15, on 04/01/2009, -2/+12Other TV celebs had the opportunity to do so and did not, as such, he won it 100% fair and square. You might have a point if other celebs were banned from doing it, but they weren't, so you don't. Digg users don't seem to get that basic logic though, unsurprisingly.
- sdcarter, on 04/01/2009, -1/+11It is a simple problem; they just need better PR. Besides, the Colbert Nation will forget about the whole thing within a few weeks at most.
- offrdbandit, on 04/01/2009, -1/+11For all those people who don't know what NASA is or does.
- jameskong15, on 04/01/2009, -2/+11What the ***** does the name of some stupid node have to do with the future of our space program? Why do you think people who care about the space program choosing the name of an item is so important? Why is choosing from a preselected group of names from mommy nasa such a grand idea?
- camaroz06, on 04/01/2009, -2/+11Too bad Battletoad didn't win, much better name.
- gforce051, on 04/01/2009, -1/+10Shut the ***** up, douche nozzle.
- mytealjacket, on 04/01/2009, -1/+9Maybe this whole back-and-forth was arranged to get more publicity too.
- WayneGoode, on 04/01/2009, -6/+13Did anyone bother to read the rules on the website? Rule 4 (http://nasa.gov/externalflash/name_ISS/rules.html) says NASA can ignore the results and pick another name, even one that was not in the contest. Do you think NASA is so clueless as to have a naming contest and say say, "Yeah, we'll just use whatever wins"?
http://digg.com/space/ISS_Module_Naming_Contest_Ru ... - razorc03, on 04/01/2009, -4/+11While I do hope that Colbert wins the decision, I think that everyone needs to stop tossing the word "democracy" into this argument and stop labeling it as injustice. It was quite clear from the beginning that NASA stated its right to a final say. Consider it more like an opinion poll by NASA, and not a definitive say in the matter.
- elnerdo, on 04/01/2009, -1/+8"users"
- jameskong15, on 04/01/2009, -3/+10And they will take all the good publicity that came with it as well if nasa goes against their will. And people wonder why so few people give a ***** about nasa. Bunch of nerds sitting around thinking that their status gives them some great ability to choose better names than what the people want.
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -0/+7thanks man!
Why do you have only 2 diggs?? this is what we wanted to see! - aboundingrhythm, on 04/01/2009, -2/+9Just put flames on it.
- fuzzynyanko, on 04/01/2009, -2/+8You know, this publicity is doing both Colbert and NASA a lot of good.
- richpav, on 04/01/2009, -5/+11Seriously, would it be the end of NASA if they showed a sense of humor for once? Jeez, loosen up a little. We could use some news to laugh at.
- P5ycHo, on 04/01/2009, -0/+6Just name the toilet after him. He as a comedian must find that funny as well.
- WarriorBlake, on 04/01/2009, -3/+8As Colbert says, "Balls in your court."
- canada42, on 04/01/2009, -2/+7Everybody will forget about it within a few weeks.... until the next time NASA needs to drum up publicity and then everybody will remember that they weren't listened to last time, why should they care now? All they're gonna do is kill off all the interest that this contest generated and hurt themselves in the future. Hope a name is worth it to them.
- Beylan, on 04/01/2009, -0/+5Dude, grow up. The Hubble had been in the planning/design stages since the 1970's and was put in orbit in 1990. It has been in operation for 19 years. To paraphrase Armageddon, thats older than most people's cars.
The whole point to scrapping the Hubble was to divert the resources that are used in operating and maintaining it into developing a brand new space telescope using state-of-the-art 21st century technology. No one was saying that it wasn't still useful, but that using modern technology it could be done much, much better. - BrutePhysics, on 04/01/2009, -4/+9You are SO right. Cult of personality... do you not even get the POINT of the show? What other major organization can be referred to as a cult of personality? Maybe one who fervently believes anything that a hot headed, angry, bigoted, pundit says?
- Crazyredivan, on 04/01/2009, -2/+7Apparently you missed Monday's show about narcissism.
- cissystrut, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4sweet, im arbitrarily immature, thanx
NASA represents progression for the human race, and you're caught up with the NAME of a physical object. How does that change really anything? - Frankttank, on 04/01/2009, -1/+5Agreed, nothing but good publicity could come from naming it after him.
