- Aikon1988, on 02/21/2008, -23/+8This just came in, Portland is now declared Area52. The meteor was actually an Unidentified Flying Object! ^^
J/K ... but could've been. :P Nice story.- john2kx, on 02/21/2008, -4/+3this just in -- your post is DOA, aka 404 - funny not found.
- knobtwiddler, on 02/21/2008, -1/+2no cookie, no video. stupid ass CNN whats their problem
- rejavan8, on 02/21/2008, -1/+8They had reports of this all over the news in Spokane WA yesterday
- rjey, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Yes, and actually it looked like it crashed near Spokane. Pretty strange that it looked like it crashed in Portland too, heh.
- eagles2k3, on 02/21/2008, -0/+7CNN is so damn retarded. Where did these people go to school? That video was shot in eastern Washington, which the last time I looked at a map, was nowhere near Porltand, OR. It was all over the news here in Washington becuase, well, that's the state it actually happened in.
- candafilm, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3You could see it in Boise, ID as well.
- ametitul, on 02/21/2008, -8/+5maybe it was .. Khal-El :)) with his meteor shower :P
i would like to see something like that in the future - vroom101, on 02/21/2008, -0/+16Scientists search for meteor's possible impact site in Oregon, Washington

- OwdenBowden, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3Nice follow up. Good Work.
I seen one of these on 95 while driving to Maine. Cool stuff. - Teh_Shiz, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Agreeing with vroom101, and also, leads are saying that if there have been any impact, it would most likely have been in the Blue Mountains, but I doubt there was an impact, because the explosion you see when you last see it, isn't the meteor hitting the ground, its the meteor.. well, exploding.

- SkippyDoorknob, on 02/21/2008, -2/+3Meteors hit all the time.
- rainierbeer, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3 not really. only 3 have ever been found in oregon.
- oldhick, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1The scientist are "pretty" sure. Just like they were pretty sure we couldn't hit something plummeting out of orbit (right in the gas tank I might add) either.
- avgeneral, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1ya, it just happened to be caught on tape

- Infinitydelta, on 02/21/2008, -16/+8Last night the Navy shot down a dead satelite over Alaska which was going to plummet to earth. That was probably a chunk of it.

- dasbush, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3Plus I heard on the news this morning that the largest pieces of the satellite are about the size of a football. They'll never strike the earth
- Navicerts, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Yea but it's not a rock like the normal football sized chunks that burn up on a regular basis, it is made of metals. Regardless I think the timing was off because this was Tuesday night.
- eagles2k3, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3Except for the fact that this happened 2 days ago.

- sundancekid503, on 02/21/2008, -1/+29No, this happened before the satellite was shot down.
- h3lx, on 02/21/2008, -7/+2Coincidence? I think not.

- TriZz, on 02/21/2008, -17/+4Ummm, could it be possible that it was debris from the satellite they shot down? That's what I thought when I saw it...but I'm not sure.
- oldhick, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3No, this was before that and the debris is still orbit from the satellite anyway.
- TriZz, on 02/21/2008, -2/+2Thanks for your answer...I'm not sure why I'm getting dugg down for simply asking a non-offensive, non-threatening, legit question.
- teh_techie, on 02/21/2008, -2/+4If you would think before you post, you'd realize that this meteor incident happened BEFORE the satellite shoot-down. So, that's why you're being dugg down.
- oldhick, on 02/21/2008, -1/+2I think it was because if you read the article and read an article about the satellite you would have figured it out for yourself.
- Kotelic, on 02/21/2008, -1/+2You're getting dugg down because there have been at least 5 other people in comments and replies above you asking the SAME question and getting the SAME answer.

- LogicBomB, on 02/21/2008, -1/+7Maybe they looked and saw you pointing at a lightpost?
- Navicerts, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1I saw one while driving down the interstate once, it's actually a little scary because it looked like a missile.
- Aidenf77, on 02/21/2008, -1/+3It looks to me like the meteor couldn't withstand the atmospheric friction and vaporized/exploded in the air. I'd love for somebody to prove me wrong with pictures of the impact site!
- FaceCage, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Good point, looks like it didn't make contact with the ground. Although it would be cool if they found the meteor, and were able to save the alien baby nestled inside.

- FaceCage, on 02/21/2008, -12/+1I've seen a lot of meteors, dude, and that is a fake. Ive never been more certain of anything in my life.
- ThePikey, on 02/21/2008, -1/+6And your expert theory, dude, is based on what? I'll make sure that NASA includes you on the next mission into space to save the planet. I'm sure Bruce Willis already has your number.
- FaceCage, on 02/21/2008, -6/+0Well, Pike the pike pikeman. My theory is based on you being a f'n amateur. It's a half-assed Lebowski quote. Its Oscar time, and the Coens are up to win one this year. I guess I'm like a giddy, 8-year old school girl. But seriously, could you hook that NASA ***** up for me like you promised?
- diggdallas, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Shut up

- thejaxx, on 02/21/2008, -1/+0So you're saying all of us that were driving or outside for what ever reason at 5:30am in Washington state just imagined this happening? It lit up the whole damn sky. I myself was just starting my hour commute to work when this happened.
- FaceCage, on 02/21/2008, -3/+1It was a joke, lame...OK, but a joke.
- kaelyiesta, on 02/21/2008, -1/+1Dont worry. Those of us familiar with the Big Lebowski get it.
- ThePikey, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Ahha, I missed that one. I was apparently out of my element. Just call me Donny.

- fiveoaks, on 02/21/2008, -1/+11This was NOT the satellite. It happened the day before.
- hoppdawg, on 02/21/2008, -0/+9I saw that thing explode in my rear view mirror on my way to work. Thought it was some giant transformer or natural gas explosion. Lit up the whole sky.
- NovaCloud, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1looks like the priestess' starfall
- macweirdo42, on 02/21/2008, -5/+5Seeing that gets me thinking - how much work would it take to weaponize meteors? You know, like build a giant catapult on the moon or something? I realize it'd be totally impractical, but it always struck me as a really cool idea.
- AMSRay, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Not as far fetched as you think. Low gravity on the moon makes it very practical. Of course, then you'd be stuck on the moon with no place to go, if the countries on Earth didn't nuke you first when they saw the meteors coming.
- john1, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Heinlein's 'The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress' covers just that - using a catapult on the moon to attack earth.
- CocoDaPuf, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Actually, there's already been a case of meteors being used as weapons.

i'm glad the camera from 1983 was there to catch it- Atomic05, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3A lot of security feeds are like that. They're designed that way to reduce the use of tape or memory and in order to reduce the overall size and cost of the camera. Not every small business can afford to drop a few grand on a high-quality camera like in the movies.
- Spritti, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0Suprising that nobody grabbed a camera in .3 seconds to take a picture of something visible for 2 seconds at 5 in the morning??? Maybe you should go sit on your roof and wait lol.
- Chairboy, on 02/21/2008, -0/+3No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.

- thejaxx, on 02/21/2008, -1/+0This happened Tuesday morning at around 5:30am Seattle time. I saw it driving on I-5 to work. This had nothing to do with the sat that was destroyed as some people are asking and suggesting.
- darkhand, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1There are lots of things in orbit to shoot down, who's to say this wasn't a 'practice target', or perhaps they shot at the satellite early? That way they'd still have time to try again and not miss their announced time should something go wrong.
- thejaxx, on 02/21/2008, -0/+0Certain other countries would be able to detect missile fire along with the signature of a missile flying upwards to that type of altitude. And all kinds of hell would of been raised by that. The Russian Fed and China were already bitching about what was going to happen, citing treaties. Also as an amateur astronomer, I've seen my share of meteorites and the entry of two satellites. Meteors typically explode like this one in the end due to the gases expanding inside the rock itself caused from entry. Sat's don't. If they don't burn up, it crashes.
