- amauldin71, on 07/06/2009, -4/+279Beats watching most of what is on TV right now.
- uptwolait, on 07/06/2009, -5/+184Dugg for the giant jellyfish at the end.
- MaxMyers, on 07/06/2009, -8/+132Would have been so much better if it was in HD.
- DigitalisAkujin, on 07/06/2009, -1/+10411,000 pounds per second.
- sphillipson, on 07/06/2009, -0/+77WOW the you tube comments for this story are especially retarded!
"teh rockits would uf burned up in space cuz the atmosphere and sun. FAKE!!!!" - budboomer, on 07/06/2009, -1/+71Was the sound effect of waves crashing on the shore really necessary?
- zlopez, on 07/06/2009, -3/+64No matter how many times I watch a launch, it still amazes me at how we can send all of that equipment from Earth to Space.
- kenkyomausu, on 07/06/2009, -2/+53SCIENCE!
- danj484, on 07/06/2009, -1/+45F=d/dt(mv). This is one application where the real equation matters.
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -0/+40Parachutes don't eat rockets.
- Qumahlin, on 07/06/2009, -0/+37Um yeah, youtube video comments are the absolute worst. They should just disable the comments section completely...it won't be missed and is near unusable as it is.
- JT114881, on 07/06/2009, -10/+47It's over 9000!!!
- jemka, on 07/06/2009, -4/+41I can't believe I actually went back to check.
- NervousEnergy, on 07/06/2009, -1/+38I actually really prefer this video; as it shows both of the cameras (pointed up and down) side-by-side. It is also a far longer video, and shows the rocket boosters fall right back down from Near Earth Orbit to the ocean. It's amazing how fast these things travel; you get to see the curvature of the Earth after just a couple of minutes.
Oh how I envy astronauts.

Stunning. - BCNewfie2, on 07/06/2009, -4/+38I don't know if this was posted here before, but it's pretty cool!
- lsatkins, on 07/06/2009, -1/+33Did they cut some out of the middle? The rockets looked like they were way up there then next thing you know they are hitting the ocean.
- kaisa, on 07/06/2009, -0/+29woosh
- nard3456, on 07/06/2009, -0/+27What did you expect?
- jemka, on 07/06/2009, -1/+26*****.
- doom777, on 07/06/2009, -0/+24yes. it also amazes me how we are using 60's -- 70's technology for what's supposed to be most advanced technological feats.
- Moralogic, on 07/06/2009, -2/+26Did you know Michael Jackson died?
/s
I know what you mean. - oltreuomo, on 07/06/2009, -0/+23Fuel is being consumed, so the mass is also changing with respect to time.
- Qumahlin, on 07/06/2009, -0/+23Yes, the essentially empty cylinders float.
- BubblesTheChimp, on 07/06/2009, -2/+24Was I the only one that became nauseous when the rockets were spinning around?
- H3llr41s3r, on 07/06/2009, -0/+21Way to go Captain Obvious.
- upnortherik, on 07/06/2009, -1/+20I watched it while playing "No Quarter" by Led Zeppelin and it was stellar.
- Swarms, on 07/06/2009, -0/+18I laughed. Because you probably laughed when you realized what you just did.
- dizzyd_23, on 07/06/2009, -0/+17Oh look, it's Buzz Killington.
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -0/+17No. I rely on retarded youtube comments when I wake up. It lets me know that the world is in check and is safe and secure. If one day I arose to see that some young scholarly gentalman scribbled on a 50 cent video:
" I favour Leibniz notation when multi variable integral calculus is involved!"
I would ***** my pants and go back to bed. - jasdf, on 07/06/2009, -0/+17You can see why rockets produce so much power when you consider that the exhaust velocity is several thousand meters per second.
F=MA - ai52487963, on 07/06/2009, -4/+21woah
- finalcloud33, on 07/06/2009, -2/+18A video like this always makes me feel better about humanity... we poses great abilities to cause war and destruction but we also have the capability to put our minds together for the betterment of humanity and really create something truly beautiful...
- Thud, on 07/06/2009, -0/+16Yes, otherwise it would be kind of hard to reuse them if you had to retrieve them from the bottom of the ocean.
- Phrea, on 07/06/2009, -0/+15Amazing how the second SRB remained in the frame for so long.
Really neat ! - Kojangie, on 07/06/2009, -0/+14But he's real fun at parties.
- DanElHombre, on 07/06/2009, -1/+13It does appear to be missing the free fall. From this video it's about 4 minutes from separation to splash down.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iurxEhL4UM - albatrossSKY, on 07/06/2009, -3/+14when you see the ship fly off into space is so crazy
- Chachuka, on 07/06/2009, -0/+11Thanks for all you do, solid rocket boosters!
- PawtucketPat, on 07/06/2009, -0/+116th one down (for real).
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/hd/HDGalleryCollect ... - pissshivers, on 07/07/2009, -0/+10yes. it amazing how little progress we've had in the past 40 years
- krazikamikaze, on 07/06/2009, -0/+10The timer in the corner is the number of seconds from liftoff. You can see they fast forwarded some of the footage, showed the same thing from different camera angles, and skipped some chunks. The SRBs detach at 127 s and splash down at 392 s, which is about 4 mins 30 seconds.
- vectoor, on 07/06/2009, -0/+10Comments on the internet are usually dumb, but youtube is in a class for itself.
- LeviTheSmith, on 07/07/2009, -0/+9You sleep with ***** in your pants?
- DaryLintheDark, on 07/06/2009, -0/+9for me space shuttle launches are always better to the sounds of Pink Floyd.
starting at the moment of liftoff "breathe in the air" would have made the perfect accompaniment for the launch, then the lonely descent of the rockest to the ocean. - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+9Yes. It's amazing how we still use wheels.
- lolmax, on 07/06/2009, -0/+9should have watched it with these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKYKyIObXyM - deeboe, on 07/06/2009, -0/+8That's stupid! Why would a jellyfish need a parachute?
- barthrh, on 07/06/2009, -0/+8It burns up. That is why they stopped painting it white -- it was a waste of money.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8Levi: You leave me assured the world is ok.
- BZWingZero, on 07/06/2009, -0/+8Not only do they save them, they reuse them.
Only part of the STS stack that isn't reused is the External Fuel Tank (big orange thing for those who don't know the terminology). -
