- Undermentals, on 07/18/2008, -0/+20"We succeeded in taking that picture, and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam."
Carl Sagan 1934-1996 - Agalychnis, on 07/18/2008, -0/+12It looks serene and almost a little surreal, but it's amazing how much is really going on within those frames.
- GBladeCL, on 07/17/2008, -0/+9When I look at this video it reminds me of the beauties of the world and our insignificance to them.
- arjie, on 07/18/2008, -0/+8The Pale Blue Dot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Pale_Blue_Dot_% ...
The picture that inspired that. - DeviantDragon, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5THAT'S NO MOON! Oh wait, nevermind, it is.
- HouseCentipede, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5"only a spacefaring race" Hurrah!
- jmcneilly, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4It's amazing... not only are we seeing Luna pass in front of good old Mother Earth, but we are seeing the 'dark' side of the moon. It wasn't until the early 60's that mankind first saw that view. Now, two are together in a family portrait. In spite of all our shortcomings, Man just keeps plugging along, exploring the world around us, discovering new things, and hopefully, fixing the broken and making that small world a better place to live.
We keep stretching out our hands to new goals. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but some day.
I'm felling a little awestruck seeing that video. The world looks so small to me now. - rodrigo74, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4nasa_budget += 1000000000.95
- majordanger, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4Duk0r, The clouds are moving, but it will be tough to see. The circumference of the earth is about 40,000 km so you are looking at 20,000 km from pole to pole. The average speed of the jet stream is only 100 km per hour and the lower clouds associated with a weather front move much slower than that.
Here is a higher resolution view of earth's rotation taken from the Galileo spacecraft
and it's still tough to see cloud movement, but if you watch closely, it's there.

Sorry, I mean that's not a knife, it's a space station.
Crocodile Dundee and Star Wars dominate my thoughts. - xekko, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3That's one awesome video. It shows how dark the moon is compared to the Earth. Its surface is as dark as asphalt, but to us in the night sky it appears white as nothing else around is brighter.
- Tallon29, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3Reminds me of my favorite video of all time, Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot.
This is my favorite version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pfwY2TNehw - StrangeFamous, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2It won't be there for long.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kHpX5aa5Lz4 - goleopards1, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Too bad if Obama is elected we will only be ably to see the Earth via an unmanned spacecraft. FYI, he's come out against manned spaceflight.
- Maddoktor2, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Beautiful - I'd like to have see that firsthand.
- duk0r, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I'm just throwing this out there... Looking at the rotation and the cloud cover- wouldn't we see the clouds transform just a little bit? I watched these videos over and over and didn't see any cloud transformation. Now it's probably because the video is from so far out and the time lapse is probably only 8 hours. But cloud cover can change quite a bit in 8 hours... I dunno, could somebody clue in me?
Great shots tho! - N00F, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1What a great quote!! The link to the image was very much appreciated too.
- xekko, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1The Earth rotates faster than the clouds move, so you won't be able to see much movement in that video.
- vroom101, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1nasa_budget = nasa_budget + 1000000000.95
- majordanger, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Whoops ... Wrong video
Here is the full animation taken from the Galileo spacecraft.
http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/vis/a000000/a001300/a0013 ... - daRoach, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1The whole "The moon landing was fake" was a hoax.
- compy386, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2We like da moon!
http://www.rathergood.com/moon_song/ - whitelights, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Leave it to Phil Plait to all at once make me realize how beautiful science is, and how much I wish I were doing doing something like THAT with my career.
- Garmonbozzia, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Hogwash! The Earth isn't round! Silly scientist.
- hideko, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1absolutely incredible!
- zeabu, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I know people that don't believe in the moon landing, and in fact, most hoaxes are believed by a group of people.
- DrJG, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1"not only are we seeing Luna pass in front of good old Mother Earth, but we are seeing the 'dark' side of the moon. It wasn't until the early 60's that mankind first saw that view. Now, two are together in a family portrait."
Yes, that is what is wonderful - to see this sitting on earth - most people are unable to pinpoint and articualte this thoug - good for you. - daRoach, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Simpsons dominate my thoughts, I had no idea that was from Crocodile Dundee...
- RealmDown, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1There is no spooney.
- bravo1995, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I see you've played knifey-spooney before.
- daRoach, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1SCIENCE!
- daRoach, on 07/18/2008, -2/+1Nobody actually believed that the moon landing was fake.
- cschmitz, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0Tell that to all of the people who actually thought it was faked.
- xtmno3, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Da moon rules #1
- AdAstraGRL, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0The movies are cropped from the original frames... Check the EPOXI website on Monday for a comparison of the full frame to what is shown in the movie...
- powatom, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1There are other countries interested in space exploration and travel, you know...
- amc1709, on 07/18/2008, -1/+0This is definitely cool, but from this statement in the article:
"Making a video of Earth from so far away helps the search for other life-bearing planets in the Universe by giving insights into how a distant, Earth-like alien world would appear to us,"
Wouldn't it have made more sense to not zoom in so much? Just curious. - philipv, on 07/18/2008, -4/+2Meh. I was hoping for something more beautiful.
- inactive, on 07/18/2008, -4/+2balls not touching
- Opiate, on 07/18/2008, -6/+1Nice video, but the writing is heavy flamebait.
- stephenmeb, on 07/17/2008, -14/+1Cool and all, but the moon makes Earth uglier.
