- snowysnowcones, on 05/12/2009, -2/+151Go NASA.
- bkrejchi, on 05/13/2009, -1/+107I watched this live in Florida on the beach. I was 15 miles away, and by the time the rocket disappeared from sight, we started to hear this deep roar that shook the ground for 20 minutes. Later, some clouds floated by that were vapor from the takeoff. It was AWESOME!
- Velenne, on 05/13/2009, -1/+73Watching this only makes me want to be an astronaut even MORE. Damn NASA, you kick ass.
- defenswens26, on 05/13/2009, -20/+86Don't want to get technical. But last I recall 1080i/720p isn't quite full HD. Still ***** awesome though.
- aphexcoil, on 05/13/2009, -1/+47This thing is slow as ***** compared to the Enterprise.
- greggerm, on 05/13/2009, -0/+40They are rocket scientists, you know.
- eviljolly, on 05/13/2009, -7/+46http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_video
"High-definition video or HD video refers to any video system of higher resolution than standard-definition (SD) video, and most commonly involves display resolutions of 1280×720 pixels (720p) or 1920×1080 pixels (1080i/1080p). "
It is HD. Maybe not full 1080p, but even a 720p television can be called an HDTV.
I do agree that it's ***** awesome though :) - TheHerk, on 05/13/2009, -0/+28Honestly, you did a good job. I was just specifically trying to come off as a douche bag by being a petty dick.
- darrellcskinner, on 05/13/2009, -1/+27*****, never realized VLC plays .mov
- TheHerk, on 05/13/2009, -3/+28Come on now, admit it. You wanted to get technical. Also, you are correct and it needed to be pointed out.
Come to think of it, I'm betting that, "Don't want to get technical. But last I recall...," generally can be replaced with, "Technically..."
/chopbusting - trizzleatl, on 05/13/2009, -0/+24I believe this situation has been resolved amicably and with maturity. Way to go, internet!
- IanG73, on 05/13/2009, -1/+23Want to try to devise some other "economical" way to shoot up a ***** rocket into space?
Go ahead. - Kto859, on 05/13/2009, -10/+32***** quicktime.
- Spire3660, on 05/13/2009, -9/+30I see more bitching about the fact that its not 'fullHD' then the fact thats its ***** .mov only. Quicktime on windows blows and even the alternatives can bork *****. Quicktime needs to ***** DIE!
- Contradictions, on 05/13/2009, -0/+21How I'd love to be in Florida to see one of those in person.
- defenswens26, on 05/13/2009, -0/+20Yeah. I was just tryin to put it nicely without coming off as a douchebag.
- sHockz, on 05/13/2009, -1/+20h4x
- IanG73, on 05/13/2009, -0/+18Mmmm, even downloads at 3.0mb/s!
- mothy, on 05/13/2009, -0/+18Come on NASA, step it up to 4K HD!
- sjsotelo, on 05/13/2009, -0/+18great job!
- JustinHopewell, on 05/14/2009, -0/+15Diggs for all!
- Rivetgeek, on 05/13/2009, -6/+20seriously, why the hell does anyone still encode to quicktime? Realplayer finally died, now its time for quicktime to bite it. x264 ftw.
- GarageMann, on 05/13/2009, -0/+13Damn NASA, you scary
- majormajor42, on 05/13/2009, -2/+15get off the internet and go study
- thehyker, on 05/13/2009, -0/+13Only a few launches left...time to make it down to the Cape and see this while I still can. It's just not the same from 150 miles away here in Jacksonville. Still cool, though.
- enigmatics, on 05/13/2009, -2/+14Fake, the shadows are all wrong.
Besides, there is no such thing as "space". NASA uses the made up space thing so it can crop dust all the earth with mind control juice. Apparently not everyone drinks their fluoridated tap water... - Johaen, on 05/13/2009, -0/+12I first tried watching it using quicktime, but as usual it sucked. Then I remembered that VLC plays .mov. So I opened it with VLC, and it played wonderfully; better than quicktime in fact.
Edit: I just noticed this also being discussed a couple posts down. - specialK16, on 05/14/2009, -0/+12I hate you, I hate you all.
- roosterjm2k2, on 05/13/2009, -0/+11Simple... IT'S ***** NASA!
- pegothejerk, on 05/13/2009, -0/+10I am very grateful for this as I watch the countdown from t-20:00 (more than an hour of watching prep) on NasaTv and at the very instant the fuse was lit the bandwidth was sucked up and it cut out until it was miles up (about 8 miles). Thanks!
- NervousEnergy, on 05/13/2009, -1/+11Space elevator For The ***** Win.
- ghatid, on 05/13/2009, -0/+10I would hate to be the guy (Oh! I guess he's a rocket scientist!) who has to calculate the trajectory of a space shuttle to try to contact a small satellite moving in space. This isn't a physics problem, it's real life...All of those extra things you have to deal with...like...friction, wind speed, varying air resistance, etc. What a nightmare. But sooooo amazing
- b8765g, on 05/13/2009, -0/+9Human ingenuity is amazing.
- Spire3660, on 05/13/2009, -3/+12FullHD is simply a marketing term. 1080p technically is called UXGA according to the technical standard.
- luke374, on 05/14/2009, -2/+10There are so many inaccurate statements about "HD" in this thread that I don't even know where to start.
- biohazzard56, on 05/13/2009, -0/+8Even though the shuttle is over 20 years old, I still cant get over how jaw-droppingly powerful these launches are.
- RumpleForeskin3, on 05/13/2009, -2/+10Sounds like my last sexual encounter.
- RumpleForeskin3, on 05/13/2009, -1/+8That's what she said.
- ghatid, on 05/13/2009, -0/+7Lol, the LHC moves particles. They can shoot either protons or lead nuclei, not even full atoms. Hahaha, have fun scaling it up to shoot a rocket.
- jlpapple, on 05/13/2009, -4/+11Ahh..how does NASA film at 49,000ft with that kind of visual clarity?
- Matt777, on 05/13/2009, -0/+7Ah, the marvels of our primitive propulsion technology.
- garryw, on 05/13/2009, -0/+7not done with a hand calc anymore, although it could be. They have full blown computer simulations for every movement.
- ThanatosST, on 05/13/2009, -0/+6There's equations for that. The physics of the space shuttle are known extremely well, so that they can calculate exactly what needs to be done in order to get the result they want.
- Nothlit, on 05/13/2009, -0/+6VLC plays pretty much everything.
- TheHerk, on 05/13/2009, -0/+6Actually, I did specifically take note of that. I'm not feeling like looking it up, but this should be compared to the velocity and temperature of a pyroclastic flow from a volcano. ...just to satisfy my curiosity; assignment due tomorrow morning; get back to me.
- atchon, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5www.nasa.gov it is pretty much plastered all over the website it is atlantis, as well as the communications in the video saying atlantis. You are absolutely wrong.
- gemlarin, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Did anyone else try watching the 1080 version on Firefox 3 and have their toolbars go nuts, or is it just me?
- roosterjm2k2, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5That's totally why he says "Lift of of the space shuttle Atlantis" there at the beginning, huh?
- ghatid, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Watch out! Those vapors cause asthma! It's the government and pharmaceutical companies keeping us down!
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4That was simply stunning.
